This is one of the classics, folks. A severely underrated (by critics) film about a young Zamundan prince who leaves his father's kingdom in Africa to find a woman who will stimulate him intellectually as well as sexually. He arrives in Queens with an upbeat attitude, accompanied by his friend/servant Semmi, played by Arsenio Hall. This is one of my favorite films, and it contains a fabulous ensemble cast, directed by John Landis.

Eddie Murphy - Prince Akeem and various other characters throughout the film.
Arsenio Hall - Semmi and various other characters through the film.
James Earl Jones - King Jaffe Joffer, Akeem's father.
John Amos (bad guy from Die Hard 2) - Cleo McDowell
Madge Sinclair - Queen Aoleon, Akeem's mother
Shari Headley - Lisa McDowell
Eriq La Salle - Darryl Jenks, Lisa's boyfriend.

What does Gaf think of this film? Also, I searched to see if there was already a thread about this and couldn't find one.

Great film with a small subtle tie in to a previous Eddie Murphy comedy what else could one ask for.

Indeed. Mortimer and Randolph Duke from Trading Places are the two homeless dudes that Eddie Murphy gives all that money to. I think the scene implies that they're going to enter the stock game again and recoup all their riches.

Just let it shine through....

Honestly, Coming to America is a great example of a film with diverse characters that don't exactly shout it out every scene. Its a film with blacks, but its not a film about blacks. Being black has nothing to do with the story.

Good story, good fun, that everyone can enjoy. I'm saddened by what (The dude that dresses up like a woman, HAHA no not eddie murphy in his later career..., the other guys...) have turned film of color into.

ahhhcchhhhhhhhhaaaaaa acccchhhaaaa...

Haven't seen this in a while but loved it as a kid. Back then I didn't even realize how many characters Murphy was actually playing.

Saw this movie for the first time about 2 months ago. It was hilarious. Can't even imagine how hilarious this must have been 20 years ago.

Cause I'm a karate man! And a karate man bruises on the inside! They don't show their weakness. But you don't know that because you're a big Barry White looking motherfucker! So get outta my face!

Coming to America was the last great Eddie Murphy movie, and it was oh, so great.

Jesus, you're right. I checked the IMDB and the only film that comes close that also came after was The Nutty Professor. And while I do like that film, I think it was missing a second major character. They just decided to have fat Eddie balance out skinny, obnoxious Eddie.

I don't see how this is underrated, almost everyone I know loves it and its definitely a classic.

It has a low metascore of 48, and an IMDB score of 6.9. I think it deserves a higher rating from both websites.

the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory.

Disagrees with you.

Ah. I love that movie. Eddie was so awesome in the 80's. I loved Coming to America, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, 48 hours, and probably several others I'm missing. It's weird because after The Nutty Professor the quality of his movies has declined laughter wise.

I liked Life a lot. Also, how can you forget Bowfinger?

Eddie and Arsenio went on to make Harlem Nights, which was funny, but not nearly as memorable. I guess they just couldn't recapture that magic. I think Harlem nights was directed by Eddie. Some great lines in that film too though. Arsenio sucked in it though, he was more annoying than funny.
