Comments by game store staff on your purchases

Bought a 3DS for my girlfriend, she was really excited about it. Picked up I think one of the Yoshi's Island games, a Kirby game, and Paper Mario Sticker Star. Guy at the counter told her all the games were terrible and started listing off a bunch of stuff she (and I) had never heard of that she should get instead. Then told her to buy them all used because she'd return them anyway.

I can see why people who are new to gaming can get pushed out of it entirely by having a bad experience with a game store staff. She didn't understand what the problem was with wanting to play the kind of games she enjoyed playing and was upset. And that was with me there, if I wasn't he probably would have been even ruder and creepy.

When I asked for Project Zero 2 for XBox, the woman working there told me that she had no problems with scary games like Silent Hill, but that this game had her sitting "like this" *with a strange tense expression* and she couldn't finish it.
Turned out my experience would match hers.

I pre-ordered Project Zero Maiden of Black Water Limited Edition. When I went there to pick it up, he says: this is the only game I would like to try on the Wii U, if I ever lay my hands on one, because the Wii U doesn't have any other good games at all.

I was like:

Ahh, this .gif is so good. Thank you.

Got mocked by a cashier for buying a Wiiu on launch day. He was proven right I guess.

I recently bought nfl blitz for the dreamcast at a retro store and the cashier was like hurr sports suck, we have so many good games.

Oh Man! Blitz brings back memories. I played the hell out of that back in the day.

Thanks EA for ruining a healthy NFL videogame market.

Game UK

"Would you like to pre-order doom?"
"No"
"Why not?"
"It might be crap"
"It won't be"
"You don't know"
"I'll throw in a free poster"
"I'm in my 30s, mate"

And my personal favourite

"Would you like to buy disk insurance?"
"Do you think I use them as frisbees?"

Just recently, while buying Kirby: Planet Robobot -

"You want to also buy the new Kirby Amiibo?"

Well, at least game store clerks here are somewhat knowledgable with their stuff.

"Anything else?"

"No," said I while tightening the grip around my fresh copy of MGS 4.

"Are you sure? Because if you like such games, I can recommend Fy Far?" She said pointing at a copy of FIFA 13.

"Go on..."

GameStop employee: "Huh. This game looks pretty cool. I can't belive I haven't played it since I usually play all this anime trash."

I don't go to his GameStop anymore.

"Are you buying these as a gift?" in reference to my purchase of Animal Crossing Amiibo and New Style Boutique 2 (They don't offer a gift wrapping service so this is literally small talk)
I know that's usually a safe question with an obvious answer. But what if it wasn't a gift? You're setting yourself up for an awkward moment with a grown ass man buying a girl's fashion game.

It wasn't a gift.

Only time anyone has commented was at my local GS when I picked up the MGS: HD Collection for PS3. Store was dead so we talked about it for like 10-15 minutes and traded steam/PSN IDs.

This was in early 2012, still friends today, played Destiny and Overwatch together.

I bought Radiant Historia and the cashier said, and I quote: "Good choice. It's a pretty good RPG. Unfortunately we don't have the first print with the soundtrack so I hope that's fine". Couldn't fucking believe it.

I traded in SSF4 for FFXIII which made the clerk sigh as she was getting the DVD for me.

If I had only known why she sighed back then.

Thank you for using PSN/Steam/GOG/Amazon.

Let brick and mortar stores die.

Are you socially awkward around real live people or something? Why should brick and mortar die, when I can get better deals at brick and mortar then I do at Amazon and PSN?

What a dumb thing to wish for.

When I buy a random game at Gamestop:
"This game is awesome, I totally love it..." (yeah sure)
"Would you like a customer card?" (for the 10th time: No)
"Would you like to pre-order game x?" (Fuck no, I just bought a game. Let me go)

When I buy a random game at Media Markt:

When I buy a random game on Amazon:
*Your order has been dispatched*

About 15 years ago I was in a game store. "Can I get that Jaguar in the window?" Dude serving me looked really pissed off and I thought it was the horror of having to walk over away from the desk to go into the window display. The horror! But when he came back with it, there was a second guy who'd come from the back room who was smiling and just said "You owe me £10".

Turns out they had a bet that they couldn't sell a Jaguar, even at £30.

Last December I was stopped by a security guy in an electronics store. I was sure he was targetting me as a thief, but he only wanted to ask if Tearaway was a good Christmas present for his nephew.

Never really got any interesting comments besides them asking if I want the manual or protection plan.

However I did see one clerk try to warn a mother about GTA5 on the PS4 as she was trying to buy it for her son who looked no older than 9-10 years old. I give the guy credit, he could have sold it without saying anything. The stupid mother bought it anyways...

Last time I remember getting a reaction in the store was when I bought a Wii U with a few games. The guy behind the counter was scanning and he got to the Bayonetta 1+2 pack and he went "oh of course Bayonetta" but he said it in a weird tone. I felt like he was either praising my good choice, but more than that it sounded a bit sarcastic. He didn't seem like a Nintendo guy so maybe he was a bit salty about Bayo 2 being exclusive, but I'm probably reading into it way too much.

I know, with everyone's Amazon Prime subscription, and the increasing digital distribution percentage, purchasing physical games in a store is getting a little dated. But, when you do, the staff might comment on what you buy.

I recall when I was younger, I pre-ordered WarioWare Twisted. When I went to pick it up, the GameStop cashier noted that I was the only one to pre-order the game. When l was older and picking up older PS Move games, the GameStop cashier commented that I was the only person buying Move games. Maybe I'm just odd like that.

How about you?

I don't think going into a store and buying physical game is dated. Best Buy's GCU program works on every game, no matter when it came out - unlike Amazon Prime. So, the discounts are still there in the store.

I was browsing and the clerk kept harassing me to buy Overwatch and Uncharted 4--calling them both "slick". After every game he would reccomened to me I'd respond with, "played it already" and he was at a total loss.

I've work in a video game store. And the rule was, if the customer don't ask your opinion on a bad game, just shut up, even If you know the guy he bought a bad game or something out of his/her taste, i was only pushing : "you have 3 days to exchange your game without penalty" (this was a store policies). I can't believe Gamestop/Ebgames don't have that rule, this is really simple to follow.

Gamestop kid gave a really weird look and chuckle when I asked if they had Gravity Rush. Then asked if I wanted to preorder Call of Duty.

K

"You won't need to cancel your preorder for Twilight Princess on GameCube. The GameCube disc will contain the Wii version. It won't be a separate game."

Obviously paraphrased, but he didn't want me to switch to the Wii preorder for some reason. Always confused and bugged me.

When I was paying for Uncharted 4 in Best Buy, the cashier looked me dead in the eyes and went "Is that a good game?"

I haven't even gotten my receipt and they want my #based video game reviews.

Went to a Gamestop to pick up a copy of Chrono Trigger for DS. At the register, we had the following exchange:

Employee: "Are you a power-up rewards member?"
Me: "No, I used to be one but I don't want to renew my subscription."
Employee: "You are buying Chrono Trigger, one of the most hardcore games ever, and you aren't a power-up rewards member?"
Me: "Uh... no?"

There's a girl in a store near my place who is really into JRPGs, and whenever I buy one, either comments on what she thought about it or asks if it's any good. Besides her, I don't think I've ever had a person comment on what I bought

How would you know if it's good you're literally buying it in front of her.

Only ever had one bad encounter, at a (now defunct) big box retailer here in Canada.

I was looking at 360 games and this guy that worked there struck up a conversation w/ me. Asked what I was currently playing/looking at buying. Don't even remember which title I was grabbing (maybe something Kinect related, honestly can't remember the timeline) and he started kind of passive-aggressively antagonizing me for having a 360 and kept trying to sell me on a PS3.

I let him kind of go for a minute or two since I didn't want to come across like a dick, and I ended up just telling him that I owned both consoles and that they both had pretty good libraries. That pretty much ended that conversation. I think I ended up walking out of there with a Wii title of some kind instead, heh.

Generally the interactions have been pretty good with the exception of some of the more obnoxious ebgames staff pushing add'l services/used titles. Like, they seem knowledgeable and you can actually engage them in a discussion (and not an argument) about a title/genre/console/whatever.

I remember buying Asura's Wrath from Gamestop and one of the clerks were like: "I didn't know we sold movies".

Bitch, do you want me to buy the game or not?

I bought Skyrim and the staff said it was amazing. :( Stopped playing it after about an hour.

You survived, then. Skyrim is a piece of complete trash. Best possible outcome is that you quit.

I remember buying Asura's Wrath from Gamestop and one of the clerks were like: "I didn't know we sold movies".

Bitch, do you want me to buy the game or not?

I don't think the employee cares

I collect games and this was a long time ago when I was around 13 - maybe a little older. I went into EBGames asking to buy Silent Hill which he had never heard of so he called me obscure game guy. He almost never knew about the games I was looking for.

Another guy gave me shit for not wanting to buy a new PC game in a plastic bag because the box was stolen. It's the same game it's just missing the box. Yeah not interested.

I used GameStop for a long time kinda bummed I can't remember anything else.

Kind of surprised so many people in here are mentioning them asking for a preorder or to be a Power Up Rewards member like "LOL then they asked me THIS!" - this is policy. They have to ask. It directly affects their hours they get.

You should be a power up rewards member though, seriously

When I was buying Pokken Tournament:

"Hey man, have you tried Senran Kagura Estival Versus?"

He then went on to explain what the game was about. It was really weird getting that recommendation; I think the guy just really liked that game and wanted everyone to play it. I didn't tell him that I already had the game, though.

To be honest, I'm usually the one to initiate the conversation, if any. A week or so ago I mentioned meteos caught my eye because of sakurai's involvement (it was hidden among the used ds shovelware for a dollar and I bought it along with Red Steel 2 and Starfy).
I remember buying Asura's Wrath from Gamestop and one of the clerks were like: "I didn't know we sold movies".

Bitch, do you want me to buy the game or not?

That's bloody hilarious.

I snagged a Wii U NSMB Bundle from a Best Buy in November 2013, but other than that, my last brick and mortar game purchase was Demon's Souls in October 2009. I remember getting harassed about pre-ordering shit and told myself I was done with retail game purchases forever. Can't say I regret my decision.

This was maybe 7-8 years ago. I went to buy Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver with my then gf (wife now). My wife isn't really a gamer, and if you saw her you wouldn't think she knew the different between a Diablo 2 Javazon, Bowazon, and Spearazon (oh but she does). Well we go to buy our Pokemon games from Fry's of all places and the cashier looks at the games and gives us the smuggest and most judgmental "pfffft" response. He was younger than us (maybe late teens early twenties) so maybe he was surprised that adults played Pokemon? I don't know, it's probably the worst reaction I've gotten. Most people at retailers or even GameStop have been hassle-free for me.
