Community S4 |OT| I Remember When This Show Was About Community College

I wish they could keep the camera work of this style without Abed having to make a movie.
A lot of good jokes, though I was hoping Chang was going to be a sleeper that activated, but in the end, it's City College (it damn well better be, anyway), so I'm fine with it being just a double agent angle. The phone retrieval scene at the end, best.

I do wish Abed would stop being the quasi-narrator of each episode though, it's rather unnecessary.

I don't get it, what's the joke here? How is Chang --> Kevin wordplay?
How do you not get it? They could have given Chang any other name like Steve or John but they picked Kevin as a callback to the restaurant for the fans. His name was Señor Chang the first season. Now it's Kevin. Señor Kevin's is the name of the restaurant everyone keeps going to that Abed hates because the manager said he didn't like Die Hard.

Forgot about the restaurant. But yeah, I see the joke/reference now.

I stopped watching but this .gif, oh man

Back to being completely unfunny again. Last week showed a glimmer of promise, but now I know there's no hope for the show. I gave it many chances out of loyalty, but no sitcom this devoid of jokes deserves support. What a shame.

I can't believe you thought last week's was a bit funny and this one wasn't at all.

Last week didn't feel like it was trying too hard. It wasn't nearly as funny to me as a Community episode should be, but it was not painful to watch.

Sorry guys, I know how much it sucks to have people come in a shit on your show. It was annoying to me when people did it last season. I won't post here anymore, just wanted to say my peace. Enjoy the rest of the season!

Señor Chang
Señor Kevin
Kevin

Simple really. Wordplay.

Oh thought there must have been more to it. I think you're reading too much into it, they just use the name Kevin a lot.

Why would they do that? It's pointless.

I have no idea why that would seem unnatural to you. He's simply excited about finishing his movie and has gone into director/editor mode and is quick talking because that's how quickly he's processing his movie in his head.

In another scene he's calling out to Jeff again saying something along the lines of "that was great jeff back on 1? jeff? jeff?". It comes across as he's not in control. When is Abed ever not in control when he's in filmmaker mode? Clearly Jeff doesn't want to help at that point but he easily manipulated Jeff in his very first documentary to get him to say the lines he wanted to. Abed thinks ahead and plans everything beforehand, him calling out to Jeff begging is completely unnatural.

I didn't feel it was unnatural at all. In that scene Abed simply had no plan and wanted a candid response, which he got. When he asked for further questions, he didn't get any. There's nothing more to it than that. In the first documentary episode there was a specific angle Abed want to convey, while in this film he was exploring the conflict with no bias or agenda but simply to "learn the truth", whatever it may be.

Last nights episode was decent. It had some good laughs. I liked last week's episode too.

Those ratings are not inspiring though :(.

I'm confident the puppet episode will probably attract a lot of viewers, as it is an "event" episode. Outside of weddings and break ups or whathaveyou, most shows don't have event episodes like Community does, so I'm hoping that might also be a factor in keeping Community around.

This episode marks the first time I laughed out loud at a joke this season. And I already forgot the joke I laughed at.

It's not that it's terrible or not enjoyable. It's just not hilarious anymore. Four episodes in, I don't think it's gonna happen anymore either. Such a shame.

Probably not. This was also the eighth episode produced (but sixth aired) so if they hadn't figured it out by that point, they probably won't for the rest of the unaired eps.

(I hope I'm wrong.)

This episode definitely felt the most like "old Community" but last week's was much better and funnier.

Not that this one was bad, it was easily the 2nd best of the season, but the reason it felt like "old Community" was that it literally felt like a weak version of "old Community." I mean deja vu. Troy playing at investigator partners was a much weaker version of the same, Pierce doing weak versions of his usual schtick, Abed doing another documentary put with less to it, and I even felt like I had seen that exact ending before. I know I haven't, I'm pretty sure, but it was weird.

Chang saved the episode. I liked the part where Jeff "caught" him with the lawyer remark.

If I'm not mistaken Abed did the same thing to Annie before when he was filming her in her room. I think it was S3 and he was filming her sleeping.

Finally watched it. Like the rest of the season, off-kilter and with very few laughs. And a little boring (but I've always disliked Chang).

episode was ok. I'm kind of over the whole Chang-angle though.

random aside : saw McHale do stand-up last week...man he's not a huge Chevy Chase fan. Lot of alcoholic jabs.

It feels like they made a small mistake in the middle/end of this episode.
When Abed was showing Jeff, Britta and Shirley video in Shirley's shop.
Abed "it goes on for another 12 hours, I couldn't even get through with it all."
Isn't this the same guy who waited 24 hours to do an experiment with Annie in Season 1?

subtle britta joke is what I assumed

It was that bad. And Abed did that because he thought he was doing Annie a favor, but he owes no favors to himself making this film so he didn't think it was worth it when he could be doing something more productive with the film like getting more footage and editing.

The biggest goof in the episode is how Annie tells Britta during Jeff's speech about how they found Chang had undergone through abuse of human rights and Allesandra is behind them, but the next shot she completely disappears, and then two shots later is reintroduced again lol

I have watched all the episodes and never caught onto the Kevin name being used all over the place. The whole Senor Chang/Kevin thing never rung a bell with me.

However, when they Troy and Annie were interviewing the fish guy, and he screamed at "Shut up Kevin!" - I thought that would have been a clue he was pretending. But it was like it never happened.

Annie and Troy took it as a clue that Chang wasn't pretending, that now they knew why he was calling himself Kevin.

Just let me have my moment. :)

You don't need a moment, you're the real abed!

Yeah when that was happening I was thinking they were going to realise he stole the dog's name and was pretending. But no, somehow the most obvious conclusion is the trout farmer can't think of more than one name and gave him the same name as his dog.

Why would Chang rat himself out like that by stealing the name of the dog of the trout farm he came from unless he could use it to improve his Kevin backstory? The whole point of this episode is how well Chang has covered his tracks to convince everyone that he is Kevin.

Damn, mocking with the idea of throwing a phone away like proper spies would do really got me :lol

Loved this episode. And is it me or did Brie look better than she already does this episode? Hnnnnggg

I also thought she looked extra great. I think there was something different done to her hair.

Jeff sent them there as detectives to try and beat Changes ruse. When they come across the dog's name is Kevin, it seems much more likely to me that most people's first thought will be 'oh chang used the dog's name" (and troy and Annie should've been thinking that too) until the show said otherwise. And my reaction was "oh ok. That's not really a smooth scenario but whatever, I'll follow the reality of the show."

Except for the fact that as far as Annie and Troy understand, they think Jeff wants them to discover more about Chang's tragic past, so they already have a spin on things that encourages them to prove how bad Kevin had it. Jeff just went along with Troy's assumption because Troy was actually there while Jeff can only rely on the footage aside from Troy and Annie.

This week's episode is amazing, and even better than the last one. In fact, it is shaping up to be one of my favorites in whole series; just will wait and see how it fares after I rewatch it a couple of times.

quick edit: Yes, Brie looked really pretty in this episode. She's gorgeous.

Very solid episode. I was worried about the show after the season premiere, and granted, it's still not a GREAT season, but it's still enjoyable to watch at least.
