Season 2 has its focus on being parodical of both film tropes and itself, whereas season one is a simple sitcom with very strong and smart writing. It's really weird. The love triangle between Jeff, Britta and Slater, Jeff kissing Annie, Chang being a believable person; episode one of season two throws all of that out of the window and poops on it.

I just rewatched the first episode of season 2 because of this post and I thought you hit it right on the head. I think the point was to subvert any tropes usually developed by love triangles in one fell swoop, in which they succeeded. One of my favorite episodes, and a fantastic way to kick off the season.
 
Alright guys, I've searched the Internet but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know what the name of the first part of the Community Medley is ? It has been used in only four episodes to date, which completely baffles me seeing at how great and evocative it is. I'm talking about the first 15 seconds or so of the medley. I know it is not the full thing because it's been used in the first episode when Jeff opens up the package that Duncan gave him, and it lasts for longer than this. Check it out below.

Incredible analyzation, and one that points out one of the flaws of Season 4 which actually seems to be following in the same "sitcom-y" roots of Season 1. I've realized that Season 4 has made a less concerned effort to subvert the typical tropes that we've come to expect from television and is in fact using them itself. It's becoming a bit lazy I suppose. For example, with the last episode the "whale" story was instantly resolved with the trope of the man changing his mind spontaneously in order to serve the story. I'm sure there's an actual name for this trope, but you get my point. However, unlike Season 1, Season 4 doesn't even have a clear overall story arc to follow in the first place and is unfortunately too weird for the sake of being weird. So it's not even as good as Season 1 in that regard. Episodes that subverted expectations like the German episode this season as well as Jeff's Dad episode should be more welcomed, as instead of following typical tropes, they subverted expectations. Too many times this season has the plot been resolved in a predictable way.

Don't get me wrong, I still love this season, but there's a lot to be desired. I just think that if we give the showrunners enough time and space and criticism, they'll get that.
 
I watched all of season three yesterday (yes). I have to admit that there is one thing I dislike about the show: Chang in season three. Most of his scenes are unfunny to the point of ruining an entire episode. The best exemple is S03E03, the episode inwhich Chang thinks he's a PI and ends up burning down his room. He occupies a sizable portion of the runtime and it definitely kills the pacing. And what I said of his coup is still true: even by post-season one Community standards, it's way too crazy and ridiculous. While season one is my favorite and wished the show hadn't gone off to crazy-town, the only reprehensible change in the show, in my eyes, is post-season one Chang. I don't care at all for him anymore. I hope they tone it down going forward.

Also, the Americanized Inspector Spacetime actually got picked up. Wow. I don't think I'd even want to watch an Americanized Doctor Who.

Oh, and adding more stuff to my post since I'm the only one commenting, but, would it be meta if I try and steal Abed's date (The first one) from him? Seeing as I am actually him.
 
I really hope Abed doesn't hurt the first girl. I like her personality a lot and wish she were real and here right now.

The other girl I don't care about. But she seems nice too.

Wait.... this third girl is onto him. Maybe SHE is better. Abed... you lucky bastard.

WHY couldn't he meet this girl in season 1? She's like perfect for him!
 
Oh God. He had better go after her. Don't screw this one up. You've apparently dated, or at least been with many girls since year 1. Soooo many girls. It's the December of your Decembers, time is running out. Don't let her get away!
 
I really hope Abed actually dates this one for the rest of the season. I mean after season 2 and him dating Jo from the Facts of Life who became a Secret Service agent and then never seeing her again, or the one in the pool episode of season 1 who we never saw again...

Also, interesting that the tag was a preview this time. I guess they really want to prepare people for it.

Also I hadn't realized Wendy's commercial girl that was in the SMBC Theater sketches. Had thought they just looked similar. Cool.

Anyway, Coat Check Girl won the episode.

Liked the episode overall, but this season's been beating the "Jeff learns a new lesson despite having gone over this kind of thing a million times."
 
Man, Abed and that coat check girl should have been dating in season 3. Definitely the best part of the episode along with Troy sending the fake stache photo and him holding the cups in the background.

Puppet episode seems like it might be killer.
 
Good, funny episode, and Allison Brie looking damn near radiant/glowing. My goodness.

She gets any cuter I'll be forced to watch this show alone...in the dark...

Good growth with Abed. I understand the complaints about Jeff always learning a lesson and agree somewhat, though it didn't get in the way.

I wish/hope they attempt to show Jeff try to find a career or future outside of school. To be honest, I'm not quite sure how he pays the bills as I have no idea where he works.

Liked her 'redemption' story, and that Pierce was useful/heartfelt (if overly absent) in the end.
Didn't dig the Abed story at first, but the coat check girl and his announcement redeemed it. I mean, the bubble trail was great.

Anyone else feel Jeff and Britta will likely end up together? The way things are going really points to it. imo.
 
That was quite an enjoyable episode and man Pierce was awesome tonight some real character development for him compared to previous seasons (felt like season 1 type of pierce before he got super racist )

That's how it was initially. I always thought it was weird how hard they tried to push Jeff/Annie considering how young she's supposed to be.
 
Could this be the first episode this season that everyone has a favorable opinion of? Seems every episode so far has had half and half love/hate with everyone who loved the previous week hating the next and flip-flopping between.

So far all I'm seeing is favorable. Someone must have hated it.

Not me though. I loved it and defy anyone of you to hate it.

I'm pretty sure all of the relationship/pairing stuff was simply Harmon screwing with people. Part of the reason why it is a little annoying with Troy and Britta actually being together now. I'm not sure that was always intended to be the end result of their flirtatious moments
 
Great episode. This season has been great all-around so far. I don't know why some of you seem bummed by it. Maybe it's a psychological thing because Harmon is gone ? To me, the season is back to season 2 level of quality. Not as crazy as season 3, which is good.
