Company of Heroes -- epic battle report

It's up on GamersGate right now if you want to buy it, and a little tip for anyone in Europe. If you use UltraSurf, http://www.wujie.net/downloads/ultrasurf/u94.zip you can order the US version which worked out to around £20, sure Play.com or somewhere else is a few quid cheaper but I'd rather have it today than wait :P

Why is the launch for this game so fucked up? It is out in some places now, not selling from Amazon until the 10th, not on steam until the 15th.... ????

Steam was wrong with it's date. It's out in 4 hours.

Also, if I register my CoH codes on steam, can I then download the game through steam and not have to install off DVDs?

I really don't want to go through the horrible patch dance that the DVD install makes you do.

What's going on? Is it on steam today or the 15th? Is the 2.5 patch out today? If I buy it at Gamestop will I be able to play it online?

Will ToV work if I buy it from Steam but own retail versions of previous CoH games? What about buying ToV retail?
According to a THQ staff member:
"If you get ToV through steam you'll need to uninstall the current install. Once you run the steam version you will have access to the CD key. Add it to your existing account and you are set.

If you get it through retail you can either patch up, or install from the DVD; then add the key to the existing account, the end result is the same." -SGT_nemo (THQ staff)

So we have to uninstall our copy, install ToV from Steam, and then update our CoH account with the ToV CD key that steam will give us.

The Relic downloader is slowing my connection even though it's barely downloading (like 10KB/s). Guess I'm gonna have to wait until I go to sleep to get the patch.

So, this patch is downloading all of ToV?

Yep. If you buy ToV you only have to download the 105MB patch I believe.

I will buy this though. I've been playing compstomp with my brother for weeks now, we love this game. Some new units, gameplay modes, maps and some tweaks is just what CoH needed. Besides, that way I don't have to download this ridiculous patch which is going to take forever.

It's not that bad. I signed in under an hour ago. Already 35% done, ~750KB/s

Apparently in Canada... none of the retail copies came with cd-keys.
also is anyone bothering to make an official thraed or what?

wut? fuck i was going to get this at the store tomorrow, pick up a new mic too.

Played a little Stonewall earlier, not sure if it's designed for 1 person or for the 4, but with 4 people it was far too easy. I could see it being more fun if you had to use more strategy/teamwork, but at the moment it's too simple.

Thats what I would like to know?

If you don't own any version of Company of Heroes it'd be good to jump on the bandwagon with ToV for the simple reason that it includes all 4 armies.

Started about 3 hours ago. Slow speeds right from the start. Restarted Steam a handful of times, didn't improve anything. =(

The expansion is cool so far.. I've only played through the Tiger Ace single player and it's super short (maybe 30 mins) but lots of fun.

They added a few new multiplayer maps, haven't really tried them yet so I can't comment but it's a nice addition.

I tried two of the new game modes, I don't really remember what they're called. One is pretty much DOTA and was lots of fun. The other one was still a little like DOTA but with tanks and control points, we tried it 1v1 and it didn't make alot of sense. I imagine if you were to get a 3v3 going in that mode it'd be alot better.

I also tried the 3v3 map, the Scheldt and they changed it around a bit. All the bridges in the map are now destroyable. I wonder what other maps were changed.

The added medal system is kind of cool, makes me want to play through more of the single player stuff.

So far so good though. I haven't had the chance to try the new units outside of a motorcycle replacement and the new tiger, they looks like just reskins. Time will tell how balance plays out or the new modes are, but so I'm liking it so far - worth the 30 bucks imo.

I hear the Kangaroo replaces the Crom and T17 replaces the Command Tank.

That seems really dumb. Brits aren't my favorite faction, but I don't see how those replacements fit in with what they're replacing. 1 vs 1 anyways.

Hopefully I can get some games in Friday afternoon.

Online or off?
The bridges used to be all destroyable until they were updated with the center permanent bridge. Could be just a bug reverting back to the old version.

Are MGs still broken?

mg's are the least of your worries if what i'm hearing about the new units is true (sans the redundant brit units).

That sounds fucked up. What about vice-versa? If I own the steam version of CoH Gold Edition, will it be compatible with the retail version of ToV?

The Kangaroo is a fucking mobile trench tank.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions. People who've been playing for years start to feel proprietary about a game and always assume the worst.

I played a bit of the new US campaign and played Stonewall with two players last night. The US campaign is a lot of fun, but the direct fire option really makes infantry a joke even moreso than before. I'm still really early into the campaign though so that may change later.

Stonewall definitely scales in terms of difficulty based on the number of people you have since resources aren't shared but instead come in constantly to each player and increase a great deal if you manage to get a few kills. I found with two people, coordinating and managing units felt a lot more strategic and communication was key.

My friend and I started off by divvying up the map and just doing our own thing on each side and that just led to massive failure. Later we decided to specialize and he'd invest in infantry, specialty squads and upgrades while I stuck to armor and AT. We made it to the next to last wave before failing. 4 tigers and 4 panzer tanks were just too much since we lost two structures already. I think 3 or 4 players would just make it too easy. 2 seems to be the sweet spot.

Oh really? I wasn't aware of that. But yeah, online and the center bridge is now destroyable.

So, does direct-fire serve a purpose? Is it usable during any gameplay type, such as regular multiplayer? From what I've read it sounds like the mode is nowhere near as useful as direct-fire in Men of War, Faces of War, or Soldiers.

I just read the Eurogamer review and my excitement has been deflated. Deflated like a man dancing inside an inflated whale costume suddenly bumping into a sharp object.

On the bright side, I can recommend this to a friend who has neither of the first two titles, and we'll be able to play regular multiplayer together, all armies included?

Yup, from what I've played the game is far too expensive if you ask me, the added campaigns are incredibly short and from the Operations I've played so far they ain't that great either. Wish I had just bought Dawn of War 2 for the same price to be honest.

Just played my first game against a PE using a Swimmwagen (sp?) and fast Scorched Earth. WOW that is some game breaking shit. I still won but only because he rushed into my base with halftracks and panzershreck grenadiers and lost them.

so the mg window swap bug is a super secret and certainly planned feature now?

How's everyone liking the new units? I haven't had a chance to play them or against them yet.

hilarious/enraging/obsolete, for the most part. the 0 minute earth-scorching ketten replacement being a favourite.
