In all seriousness, I wonder how badly this is going to affect Target's sales in the final week before Christmas? I could see them taking a pretty big hit as people are worried about using credit or debit cards there until this is all resolved.

Also, keeping a keen eye on my bank statements because I bought something there black friday weekend and the weekend after that.

Honestly, most people aren't even gonna know about it before it's too late.

CC info should be the least of everyone's worries if you bank with a legitimate business. Most have fraud guarantees and you'll get your money back as long as you report it. And they usually will issue new cards to people who they know were compromised automatically.

It's in the news now. Plenty of time for Christmas shoppers to avoid Target out of fear that using a credit card there may not be safe. I worked for a company that had been hacked at a few locations, and once that news story was out so many people came in asking if it was still safe to shop at our store, even though the incident was on the other side of the country for this retailer.
Trust me, people will be paranoid about using their cards at Target for a while. I am just curious how big of an impact this will have in the busiest shopping week of the year.

Shit. I shopped there a ton since Black Friday. There's one down the street from work.

Good thing I only use my credit card, but damn Target if I have to change it. I'm almost just attempted to do it now as a safety measure.

Yeah I live within walking distance to a Target. I've been there like 20 times since BF and I used debit every time! ughhhhhh...

Good thing I've got no money for the thieves to steal!

I just had to PM Fire Emblem at Target even though I had an order with Best Buy. Was paranoid it would be cancelled since others had their orders cancelled.

Just changed my account alert settings to text me if anything at all happens on my debit card. Hope that helps at all if something happens, because I don't want to change my card.

Maybe this will be the thing that shifts the US card industry to using chip and pin rather than magstrips?

we're due for that, we're both less secure and more willing to have our cards out of our sight (waiters weren't walking off with my card in europe but bringing a swiper to my table). this has led to some fraud but i actually respect that this isn't a widespread issue already.

Watching the news this morning here in Philadelphia, they reported some 40 million consumers were affected by this theft. The story was followed by a local fire company shopping for a children's charity event.....at Target.....

Glad I do my Black Friday shopping online. 40 million sounds like the biggest credit card # theft I've heard of though. That's just insane. Target needs to step up their security.

Why would the Secret Service be investigating this? Isn't their only function to protect the President? I'm probably ignorant lol.

wouldn't you think a bank would be up to date on stuff like this? Like hold a meeting before you open to discuss?

I went into PNC and asked if I should cancel my card and the guy had no idea what I was talking about. Well I cancelled it anyways. Got a new one coming.

It is has been confirmed by Target:

Target has now confirmed the data breach. Up to 40 million card accounts may have been affected between November 27th and December 15th. In a press release, the company says it "alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately after it was made aware of the unauthorized access, and is putting all appropriate resources behind these efforts."

I use my Visa card everywhere and never my debit card. I also monitor the purchases made. Not really worried at times like these as the CC takes care of any problems. The main inconvience will be if they issue a new number. I feel for people who use their debit cards though.

Yeah, but it is still a bother.

Well, at the end Walmart wins because their glitches gave free food and cheap TVs to people. Take that, grocery shopping elitists!

lol @ people wanting charges brought against Target or some other punishment. Charged with what? More than likely Target has industry standard or better-than-standard safeguards in place.

I wonder how long it will take to refund fraudulent purchases made with these compromised accounts. Gotta suck to have to wait for ur money around Christmas

Welp. I went back through my credit and debit card history and of course, the one time I visit target all year, it's Dec. 9th. Sigh. It was my debit card to boot. No fraudulent charges yet fortunately. Just called my bank and canceled the card. Sucks to be without it for the next 10 days but that's what a credit card is for.

My bank rep said they have been blown up all day with calls related to Target. Sucks.

CC charges are usually blocked pretty instantly. The worst part is waiting for a new card. If that happens, try to get them to overnight it for you.

(When my RZ card was compromised twice, they sent the new cards by mail. But when I called them up to say it was having trouble scanning at a couple of different merchants, of course they overnighted it right away so I could keep spending money)

Not all debit cards have the same level of fraud protection though, as far as I know, and those are also going to be affected.

The worst part of debit cards is even if you ultimately get your money back, not all banks are exactly prompt with sorting everything out. That's cash that you can't use.

They would have only been blocked if it was a suspicious purchase or if the card was reported as compromised. I know plenty of people who do credit card scams and they use them quite a bit before eventually getting declined.

The transactions that do go through still get charged to the card and have to be refunded back(if debit) or credited back(credit cards) which can take a few days to a week after the fraud is recognized.

Not to mention it takes 7-10 business days for a new card to be printed and mailed so a lot of people could be fucked during this holiday season. With this magnitude of fraud there could be significant delays in each step of the process.

Does this only affect Target in the USA? I bought some things over there in Canada a few days ago...

I used my debit card once. I really need to apply and get a CC...

From Target.com

If I shopped at Target.com or in Canada should I be concerned?

No, this was an issue that impacted US stores.

You are fine.

My credit union is quick to catch/refund fraudulent purchases, so I'm not too worried.

I'd like to get a CC to use for this kind of stuff, but because I basically have no credit history I can't get a CC and thus can't build credit. >.>

Banks often give credit cards so you can start building credit. They don't require a credit history.

But a lot of times it goes unnoticed.
And even when you do notice and you get any fraudulent charges reversed it's still a pain in the ass to update all your payments to a new card.

And then there are those cases where something like this causes a person to be overdrawn on an account and get charged for it. You may or may not get this reimbursed but it's another hassle.

And then there are the cases where a person needs to make a purchase but they can't because they're over the credit limit or overdrawn from fraudulent charges and they're stuck. You can't just tell a retailer "oh, it's ok, just someone frauded up my shit".

And even when you do get refunded, sometimes it can take several weeks or longer. Not an issue if you can afford that, but if you can't then it sucks.

Don't see any reason to downplay the significance of something like this. It may not affect you or me in any way other than being a headache to deal with, but it absolutely affects others in a more meaningful way.

I belong to a credit union, the only thing I can get through them is a debit card.

Guessing that probably only works if you belong to a big bank?

It's been so long since I had to go through that nightmare chicken/egg scenario of not having a credit history so I couldn't establish a credit history.

From my memory I looked online for a bank that had secured credit cards. It was basically an overpriced debit card, but having that for several months did the trick.

The first credit card I had was a starter/college student credit card offered by my bank. It had a pretty low limit and helped me build my credit until I could get a card with a much larger limit.

Yeah. You could always open up an account and keep a little money in it. They often extend a credit card offer after a few months. At least, that's what happened with me.

Was at Target today and inquired at customer service about changing my RED card. They told me everyone compromised has already been contacted and the millions talked about in the news is a huge exaggeration. I'm still getting things changed but thought I'd share.

BTW, USA sucks for not being more proactive about using the latest in cc/dc tech
