CC info should be the least of everyone's worries if you bank with a legitimate business. Most have fraud guarantees and you'll get your money back as long as you report it. And they usually will issue new cards to people who they know were compromised automatically.
But a lot of times it goes unnoticed.
And even when you do notice and you get any fraudulent charges reversed it's still a pain in the ass to update all your payments to a new card.
And then there are those cases where something like this causes a person to be overdrawn on an account and get charged for it. You may or may not get this reimbursed but it's another hassle.
And then there are the cases where a person needs to make a purchase but they can't because they're over the credit limit or overdrawn from fraudulent charges and they're stuck. You can't just tell a retailer "oh, it's ok, just someone frauded up my shit".
And even when you do get refunded, sometimes it can take several weeks or longer. Not an issue if you can afford that, but if you can't then it sucks.
Don't see any reason to downplay the significance of something like this. It may not affect you or me in any way other than being a headache to deal with, but it absolutely affects others in a more meaningful way.
I belong to a credit union, the only thing I can get through them is a debit card.
Guessing that probably only works if you belong to a big bank?
It's been so long since I had to go through that nightmare chicken/egg scenario of not having a credit history so I couldn't establish a credit history.
From my memory I looked online for a bank that had secured credit cards. It was basically an overpriced debit card, but having that for several months did the trick.
