Conservative Christian ritual: Purity Ball

This is still weird.
I'm going to make it weirder for you: those people feel more conformable holding a special event in which their daughters plead sexual obedience to them than with teaching those girls sexual education.

In other news, creepy patriarchs are still creepy, disgusting.

This has nothing to do with Christianity.

Don't degrade an entire religion on the acts of a few crazy people.

You wouldn't start a thread saying "Cultural Muslim ritual: Suicide bombing".

I don't get how you can say it has nothing to do with Christianity. Its disingenuous to suggest that there's some kind of uniform understanding among Christians about practically anything. At no point did anyone say "All Christians have purity balls." But its clearly a rite based on Christian doctrines.

Its also disingenuous to suggest its equivalent to saying "Cultural Muslim ritual," because there isn't a broad understanding of actual Muslim rituals in the English speaking Western world.

Why is it weird? It's a Christian value to abstain until marriage.

Disclaimer: I'm agnostic and generally against religion.

I would agree. But I'm not Christian. Off all the things to single out (evolution denial, gay rights etc) this seems like an odd place to poke fun. Abstinence is a value to them and hurts no one outside of their religion.

Because it's essentially shaming young girls into expressing their sexuality. There was a thread made about this several days ago that I posted in, but I'll restate what I said here.

Being sexual and having urges is not sinful, as these parents teach their children to believe. They shame their daughters (and their sons, too) from expressing themselves in natural and normal ways in the name of religion and God. It is not preparing these young women for the reality of life in their adult or teenage years. It's one thing to be rebellious against your parents, but when they control every aspect of your life, down to who you are as a person and what you feel, that's taking it over the line.

People can believe in whatever deity or faith they want to, but I hardly think it's fair that they are "purity shaming" these young girls.

Edit: I apologize if I have offended anyone, that was not my intention. I'd like to consider myself very open minded to religion as a whole, and I understand that this issue does not pertain to the entire Christian community.

It's the incestuous undertones that make it weird, right?

That, the obsession with what girls do with their bodies, the fact that they're all 12 year old girls, and the fact that there's no male equivalent, yes.

Can't really call them 'undertones' when they're that strong. ;)

(Though what makes them weird is the whole idea that fathers are obsessed enough about their daughter's hymens to hold ceremonies, dress them up in prom dresses and take creepy pictures holding them in mildly erotic embraces. The fact that we're seeing the photos makes it doubly weird.)

Seriously though, these kind of rituals or infatuations with this part of old world patriarchal views of virginity and women strip girls of their own sexual agency and they will constantly be looking towards the men in their life to make the decisions and their approval. The best for anyone, but especially women/girls at this point in time is to own their sexuality outright and not feel pressured to abstain from it lest they fall into several pitfalls along the way from abusive relationships to exposure to stds/pregnancy to low self-esteem.

So by that logic would you freely admit that Islam is about suicide bombing ... beheading prisoners on webcam, stopping girls attending school and executing homosexuals.

That's an absurd strawman that isn't even worth an intelligent response.

In a world where stupid 15 year olds fuck other stupid teenagers and create a future stupid human that will likely make other stupid mistakes. maybe this isn't that bad?

The stupid 15 year olds are the ones whose parents don't assist them in obtaining sex education, birth control/condoms and being supportive. Guess which states have the highest teenage pregnancy rates.

The facts and whole idea behind this thing are definitely fucked up/creepy as fuck, but don't see what's "creepy" about the posted pictures themselves. Just looks like a standard cheesy-family-photo deal with a father and daughter, though with silly dramatic backgrounds probably meant to invoke an image of blue-collar america (like in a chevy truck commercial).

You know they still gonna fuck. Even worst, without protection because instead of a healthy chat about safe sex they do this stupid shit.

A balls to ass photo of a father embracing his teenage daughter doesn't strike you as odd?

Abstinence is hardly an effective method of birth control, and should not be considered the only option. As Devo said, the states with the highest percentage of teen pregnancies are those that use abstinence as the only acceptable method of birth control.

The reality is that many teens are going to go out and have sex, so we should be teaching them that there is a safe way to do it.

This is still weird.

Out of all of the crazy, inexplicable things religion demands, the focus on prohibiting sex before marriage is something I cannot even begin to comprehend.

It makes a lot more sense if you consider the danger of being pregnant 2000 years ago. Also have to consider marriages were mostly arranged back then, at a very young age. Being a virgin at 12 and at 21 are two very different things.

Having said that, this is weird. But I have to lol at people that claim it is A OK for boys in very conservative religions to sex it up, or somehow these dads want to fuck their daughters.

If it worked at lowering pregnancy and STD rates, sure, maybe we could argue that it made sense in consequential terms. Since all indications are that emphasizing abstinence as an ideal over education actually makes things worse in that regard, and since on top of that this particular incarnation of it is both creepy and incredibly sexist, I think we're ok to say that this is bad.

To paraphrase XKCD, more harm has been done by people flipping out over the decline of society than from the actual decline of society.

I don't know, I'm sure there's something to be said about what something like this can do to a young girl's mind and self-esteem with these kinds of preconceptions about sex.

Telly Savalas makes his triumphant return as Jack in the reboot of Titanic.

Damn you :lol

Some real creepy pictures... Getting some vibes of repressed incest desire from the dads, and the daughters don't seem too enthusiastic either.

The real problem with this-besides the creep factor-is that the parents do these things in lieu of proper sex education. That's where I throw the red flag-people like this make the rest of the us look like idiot savages because they go through these bizarre rituals while avoiding responsible parenting. Throw on the sexist double standard and patriarchal tones and the appearance of these kind of rituals gets even worse.

Very difficult to stop it though. Criticism of this specific behavior, even by members of the faith, will simply be met with the standard persecution complex responses and is not going to be very productive. More relevant is the wider struggle against anti-intellectualism in evangelical Christian circles and that particular fight has been raging for decades now with no real winner in sight.

Or, how about instead we focus on educating them about safe sex rather than forcing abstinence which has no guarantee of preventing anything and is also extremely controlling?

The problem is that the 'purity ball' does exactly jack shit about solving the problem. The key is in your very first words: 'In a world where stupid 15 years olds fuck other stupid teenagers'. All the purity balls in the world aren't going to change this single fact. You need to concentrate on making those teenagers less stupid by giving them the tools they need to have sex without making 'stupid mistakes'. A single pack of condoms would do more to stem the tide of teen pregnancy than any purity ball, and would be a hell of a lot less creepy in the process.

But in the end, this has nothing to do with 'stupid kids being stupid' - this is purely a religiously motivated attempt to treat women as property, same as it ever was. These dads need to stop spending so much time thinking about their daughters' genitals and seriously go get laid or something.

Well, I'm not poking fun at abstinence, although I can if you really want me to.

I'm poking fun at making a ball out of it.

No, no, no. We gotta make them think it's a big mistake so that when they actually do have sex, they do it, they hide it, and they are so ashamed of it that they're near suicidal, and that they will have betrayed God and their rightful deed-holder, Daddy. That will teach them their bodies are a precious temple that they have defiled with their sinful ways.

Awko Taco much

Meh seems a bit controlling for my tastes of parental styles but it's not the worst thing a parent could do. Don't really agree with it though

It's not really new though

A new conservative religious ritual, the Purity Ball, is currently observed in 48 out of the 50 states.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purity_ball

In 1998, the first purity ball was organized by Randy and Lisa Wilson in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States of America. This event was created for the Wilsons' five daughters and the fathers that he viewed as not having a place in their daughters' lives.[5]
