Controlling PS4 with a TV Remote, fully supports HDMI-CEC controls

I recorded a video of how this is working right now. There is not a lot of use for it because it only works on the main UI. At least on my Panasonic TV.

Edit: WAIT, I think it's a Netflix app issue. It works in Amazon Instant. Hopefully Netflix will add support in the future.

Huge PSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On your tv remote, your Back/Return button (the one that usually backs out of menu options) will usually also play the role of the 'O' button to back out of stuff as well.

Someone told me this the other day and my mind was blown. I've been using my slim for almost 3 years now it never realizing this.

As well, if your TV has a device or CEC menu button most times that will act as the PS button as well. On my 2008 Bravia it's called sync menu in the Bravia sync section.

Well, it also doesn't work in Hulu, but you're right in saying it's an app specific issue. I'm sure they'll both patch in support later. Quick, somebody tweet yosp!

I'm going to blow your mind Internet. Ready?

I been doing this with my ps3 for sometime now. In fact if I it turn on my ps3/ps4 the tv also turns on by it self and changes to the appropriate HDMI input. But there is more. It adapts the image scene settings to the viewing content.
All with one button press of the remote.

Lol crazy right? I thought everyone knew this. I even have it through the receiver. I can do pass through on my Pioneer also. Even my Samsung sound bar turns off through my HDMi arc connection. Ive been doing this since PS3. Back in the day it was not universal but now it is.

Oh wow! I need to test this out! Both my TV and home theatre are HDMI CEC compliant. I knew you could turn stuff on and off, but never thought you could navigate with the remote!!

And now I have it set up on my PS3 as well. Being able to have the systems turn my TV on and to the right input is so great.

Yep, big fan of HDMI-CEC. PS3 supports it too. The best part is it will turn on the TV and change the input. So I just turn on my PS4 and I don't have to fiddle with anything.

There's a bit of input lag when using my TV remote to control things, but for firing up a movie or something that's not such a big deal.

I've found that some HDMI cables stop it from working. The cables shipped with the PS4 work fine for me.

It gets even better depending on manufacturer. Each device will register itself on my TV. I can then select any of those devices from that list and hit enter on it at which point it'll turn on that device and switch my AV receiver to the right input. Hitting the volume on my TV remote will also adjust my receiver volume if the TV detects that it's connected to a receiver over CEC.

my receiver will even Passthrough HDMI video and audio while in standby and because my TV detects that the receiver is in standby it will automatically route sound through the TV speakers. Though the Wii U and dual shock 4 having headphone jacks on them largely negates the need for that.

It really is about 50% of what Microsoft is trying to accomplish, though admittedly you need all devices to be CEC compliant in the HDMI chain.

I guess in this instance, having a preference for Sony Electronics paid off handsomely. If you have a Bravia TV, Sony Blu-Ray player and PS3/PS4, all of these devices 100% works together via HDMI-CEC (or Bravia Sync)

I also have a Raspberry Pi connected via HDMI-CEC and it works wonderfully.

For samsung, you have to turn on the option from Menu>Anynet+. But before that you need to connect your PS3/ PS4 with the TV through HDMI.

Yes it should still work. But you will also have to have a HDMI CEC compatible receiver. If you do then enable HDMI CEC for the port connected to the PS4.

Holy crap it worked! I had to enable it on all three devices (TV, Receiver & PS4), now I can navigate select and go back using the Samsung remote. It kind of works on the Harmony but it skips too many items when I move with the arrow keys. I have to fiddle with the settings a bit.

Edit: Wait arggg... it doesn't do anything on Netflix! :(

Never really liked HDMI-CEC, it's just not possible to get it to work like I want with all of my devices. So I'll stick with my Harmony Remote and just use the controller when I want to do anything with my PS4.

Has anyone found a way to not make my TV turn on if I use my Vita to initalize remote play? Found my TV downstairs on today after I had been using remote play upstairs. Apparently when I went back into standby it didn't shut itself off! =D

Thanks to that other locked thread I'm now aware this is a thing and thank god. Turns out my set supports this and I've been using it for ages not realizing I could use my remote with my consoles :lol

Well thats frustrating. I have a AVR that supports HDMI-CEC and I have it turn on at both my AVR and my PS3 but it seems like it does nothing. not sure why.

Meanwhile my Chromecast can control my AVR via HDMI-CEC.

Working for me. Thanks GAF. As someone else said, it's not working in the Netflix app but hopefully that'll be updated soon. Did it work on Netflix for the PS3?

Use it all the time for the PS3, was one of the first things I did when setting up my PS4. Nice to turn on the PS3 or PS4 and my TV automatically turns on and changes inputs, then I can just use the remote to get around.

I'll probably continue to use my PS3 for Netflix, but when the PS4 version is updated to support it it'll be nice to have at least.

Yeah it works for the PS3 Netflix app.

Go the Settings > System and then check "Enable HDMI Device Link". I just figured that out a hour ago.

Yeah, I did that. After messing around for awhile, I gave up. I turned everything off and played pokemon. Came back and turned on my ps4 and the tv came on. However, it won't change to the correct input. It just powers up and my tv remote doesn't do anything for my ps4 menu.

This is what I was planning on doing with the PS4, we already do the same with our PS3 (Slim), it doesn't work with the original fat version though.

Same lol. Can get quite annoying if you're trying to watch tv though, since it turns on, and switches to the PS input automatically. For those with Pannys, if your tv has viera link, then you're able to do so.

Yeah, I do this with my TV and PS3. Though the controls are a little limited, but it's still convenient.

My frustration with it on the PS3 is that it became less and less useful over time. As new versions of apps were released, they were released without support for it. Take Amazon Instant Video, for instance. The first versions of the app worked with BraviaSync just fine. Then they overhauled it and it didn't work anymore. The PSN Store is the same way. When it was redesigned, it dropped support for BraviaSync. I haven't actually tried either of those with the TV remote on the PS4, but I'll try to remember to do so tomorrow.

There was a official Blu-Ray Remote for PS3, which supported HDMI-CES, has anyone tried, if it is possible to use this with a PS4?

The "Options" button on your remote will function as the Triangle button on the DS. Enter acts as the X button (which should have been obvious). And the "Display (or OSD)" button pulls up the OSD on the PS3/4. Depending on your TV, there should be a button that corresponds to pretty much every button on a DualShock. My dad's TV remote takes some hoop jumping to get to all of the functionality, but my Sony HX929 remote has pretty much everything right at your fingertips.

HDMI-CEC support is a function of the output and display devices, not the remote. Since the PS3 remote doesn't work with a PS4 it doesn't help you here.

All those guys in the comment section quoted above complaining that their Harmony remotes won't work don't seem to realize that if their universal remote can control their TV, then it can control their PS4 via HDMI-CEC.

I hope this works in all of the UI. It really bothers me that it works so great on PS3 and they ditched it in the new Storefront :(

But since the store is integrated inti the ui on PS4 I'm kinda optimistic.

But Polygon made a big stink about it not being the case in the review. Surely they wouldn't rush out with info that isn't properly researched?

Nice, been wanting to do this since I got a TV that supports it. My PS3 doesn't, so I've been out of luck (only Slims, which have a newer HDMI chip, support it). Will definitely be doing this when I get a PS4, seems nice for Netflix and such. EDIT: Oh, it doesn't work in Netflix? Let's hope they fix that.

This feature (HDMI-CEC) works wonders with my Panasonic ST50 and PS3. The beauty of it comes if you have DirecTV, because their remote lets me turn on the TV, which will wake up the PS3 if it's on the corresponding input. Then, I can just use the arrow keys for navigation, Enter for X, and Back for O, and this DOES work in Netflix!

With only a single remote, I have immediate access to all TV channels and PS3 functions (sans games).
