This is ridiculous! As an orthodox Jewish woman, this article offends me and is the epitome of religious ignorance and intolerance.

Thats right, people going WTF is intolerance, not the sending the women to the back.

It goes on for a very long time.

Bloody hell, ridiculous. No problem if it was really a private bus, but when it is incorporated into the public system that shit needs to stop.

heh not surprised. my county's locked into a constant battle with orthodox jews about their building codes and tax evasion practices.

You can see how GAF acts already. Ridiculous.

Wow, seriously - that's fucking retarded - get that shit out of the public sphere.

If they want to do that retarded orthodox thing at home, do it there - not in the public sphere.

Sharron Angle would be using a shotgun to rub out an orgasm for liberty.

They need to hire their own bus for their own route if they want this type of bullshit.

O_O

No outcry? Had this been in a Muslim neighbourhood, the thread would be full of complaints of their "backwards arse culture", not respecting women, etc, etc...

But then I've grown to accept these double standards, Muslims, after all, are seen as fair game when it comes all manner of religious and cultural slurs/insults/etc.

Bah, you beat me to it. The lack of outcry over that sign is pretty shocking. Treating women like second class citizens and so brazenly advertising it and yet there's little outcry or complaint from the community at large of said behaviour.

Are you implying that a certain group has enough political and economic influence that it can scare people into not criticizing it as harshly as, say, Muslims?

Pretty much.

But this is an opinion of someone on the outside looking in and is based on recent actions like the threatening of Jewish supporters of the Dem party to withdraw financial support and fund a Rep if Obama dared to even acknowledge Palestine's attempt for statehood at the UN or others threats of them withdrawing financial support because of how critical he's been of Israel.

It might be different on the ground...

Christians, you know how people get all weird and shit when you try and make them do something because the Bible says so? Yeah, how are you feeling right now reading about this story?

Lately I get the feeling that religion still exists mostly to support biases weird people have without fear of repercussion. Maybe it served a better purpose in the past.

I watched a doco on Hacidism on Netflix recently to get up to speed, seems they even piss off the regular Jews with their reluctance to integrate in any way.

Hopefully the younger generations continue to move away from these backwards practices. They simply have no place in modern society.

I'll assume that you believe Gaf would embrace this practice if it were perpetrated in the name of Islam, as the story seems to be generating little more than ridicule.

So from the ground to the top, it's really just politics as usual, which means purchasing people's praise or silence on issues.

The B110 bus, which runs between Williamsburg and Borough Park, has been run by Private Transportation Corporation since 1973, under a franchise with the city. And to many in the area, the busÂ’s tradition of separation comes with little surprise or indignation.

But this week, the busÂ’s practices gained widespread publicity after The New York World, a Columbia Journalism School publication, reported that a female rider was told by other riders that she had to leave the front.
How was this just noticed now?

One father who sat in the front with his son and daughter and declined to give his name said men and women “need to be separated.” He looked down at his daughter dressed in a bright red raincoat, with her blue eyes frozen in amazement, and said: “She’s small. When she’s big, she will sit in the back.”
Uhh...wowsers.

What should really scare people is that if it WERE NOT for a journalist sniffing out the story, this would've remained unnoticed.

People should be scared as hell that the free press is losing power and being watered down as we speak.

Who makes up these rules? I'm pretty sure the Torah, Koran and Bible didn't take public motorised transport into account.

Lol, I hadn't thought of that. Probably, "Women shall not sit in the front of the cart as with a man, it is an abomination."

"It took seven years to make this intriguing documentary about the world of the Hasidim, who exist in an insular universe (one that few outsiders ever get to see) and uncompromisingly adhere to Jewish ritual. Leonard Nimoy and Sarah Jessica Parker narrate this illuminating look at a people who speak Yiddish and dress distinctively yet cherish family, community and a life of meaning that coincides with most Americans' core principles. "

I dont know about that theory, but it's clear any instance of Muslim backwardness or misdeed, however trivial, arouses a special kind of anger and resentment in people and more intense reaction from the media. It reminds me of the way of the way media and society perceives lower class black criminals, namely, with heightened scorn.
This has less to do with any supposed fear of the ADL or Abraham Foxman and more to do with latent prejudice.

I 100% guarantee that if either the groups you mentioned had enough political and economic influence, they could suppress negative media if they really wanted.

It always comes back to politics, and by politics I mean who has the money.

This sounds completely unbiased!

Was thinking the same thing. Thread would have been 5 pages by now

I think the producers choice to use Jewish people for the narration is their attempt to approach the topic of Hasidism with extra sensitivity.

Before i came in i was thinking that this is like the Japanese train separation thing (Which is done for a good reason), but then i read the article. WTF?

So how do you feel about gay marriage not being legal in most of the United States?

As long as they are under contract with the city they should not be allowed to discriminate. If they were a private bus line they should be allowed to do so.
100% agree with this.

This issue is pretty big in Jerusalem right now as well.. With seperated buses and sidewalks and all... Pretty crazy.

And new halakhas (laws) are made by various Rabbis who set precedents. The Torah is light-core for the religious jews, the Mishna and Gamra and stuff are much more important.

Honestly, She shouldn't get on the bus then.
Most NYers know that the b110 is "public". it has its own route and is protected by the mta. but its basically for the hasidic jews to get their communities with it.

Can't help but see this is just some out of towners trying to make a name for themselves.

This will just end with the company becoming private. Done deal.

I know it's an obvious reply, but guess you'd say the same thing to Rosa Parks right?

Discrimination like this is wrong, it shouldn't be associated with the public bus system at all. If it goes private, good, it can be replaced by a non segregated public bus and stop receiving any public tax money.

I never knew this was happening in Brooklyn o.o Just seems surprising that something like this would be authorized by the city.

The real question is, should we allow buses full of extremist Jews to operate mere blocks from Ground Zero?

Shit, they might interfere with the nearby strip clubs. This is America, Goddammit! We can't let that happen!

There's a pretty good article about how the fact that 65% of ultra orthodox Jews In Israel don't work, and are simply paid by the government to study Torah and fuck around. Regular Jewish folk - especially the very significant and somewhat counter intuitive secular Jews, are pissed off about it and see it as a Greece style threat to the country's economy and future.

Not sustainable.

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/may/10/world/la-fg-israel-idle-20100511

As to what this has to do with the article, it's just another aspect of ultra orthodox behavior that has little to do with functioning in modern society.

If it goes private, that route will be removed from mta since the majority of riders are the jews.and they will just take the private bus instead.

as for your rosa parks comment, yes,its obvious. 1)its not a law ,so she didnt have to comply 2) its a unwrriten rule that the bus line is for them 3)i hardly see it as discrimination as i see it as bad paperwork. like i said, it will become a private route, and watch this do more harm than good.
