Convincing someone to be a PC gamer.

I agree that you shouldn't force it on him. Sure you can talk about it and the gear you have but if they are interested they'll ask and if they're not then just leave it be.

Just give him a Gaf account, I guarantee he won't get past 2 threads without someone trying to convince him to get a PC, seems like a thing lately

I don't set up specific sessions to convince my [non-bourbon] drinking friends to come over and learn about the joys of drinking bourbon. Of course, if we're at a bar or something, it'd be different, but that's not really the awkward situation being described here.

Ok but what if someones make a thread about that and wants o do it? Liquor enthusiasts exists. Are hobbies really that sacred now that trying to share them with one that doesn't practice them have to be compared to evangelization every time?

Now that I've read the op, this is almost on par with the guy wanting to show his new girlfriend how far gaming has come.

I play my PS4 much more than my PC these days. PC gaming whilst rewarding is a complete pain in the ass I found myself spending hours tinkering to get games running right or at all in some cases over the years and those hours I simply haven't got anymore.

There are also some hardcore fucks on-line in the pc space who run everything on low with million dpi mice along with the nerds running hax as well.

Sorry, it's no where near the gaming utopia some here make it out to be.

I agree to an extent. I upgraded my pc to an i5-4690k and gtx780 last year and for about a month found myself screwing with in-game graphic options/driver settings and watching frame rate counters much more than actually playing and enjoying the games.
I switched back to gaming exclusively on my ps4 and couldnt be happier.
I still use the pc occaisionally for elite dangerous but thats about it.
I just consider the ps4 to simpler/easier than pc gaming. Yeah you can get higher resolutions/better framerates/mods on pc but those advantages simply dont outweigh the simplicity of consoles (particulary ps4) for me.

Dude it's video games. You don't have to force someone into something they don't have an interest in returning to.

Pretty much this. Although I don't think he's trying to force him. It looks like he's trying to get him excited. Or maybe OP needs a friend for playing MP games.

Again, how is this relevant?

What was the relevance of the guy being quoted coming into this thread and saying that the OP should tell his friend all PC gamers are elitists? HE and a few other ocnsole warriors, started this PC vs console thing, as is usually the case, by trolling. Weird thing, he hasn't been banned. Anyone want to wager on how long it would take for me to get banned if I were to go into a PS4 thread and call the entire PS4 community elitist? I'd say 5 minutes tops.

But the way this whole scenario is presented seems incredibly forced, condescending, and akin to organized proselytizing.

The fuck? Come over my place and let's play some games = "incredibly forced, condescending, and akin to organized proselytizing" To you?

You poor, delicate, flower.

Maybe you are socially awkward, I don't know, but, I tend to share my hobbies with friends all the time, and they share theirs with me all the time as well. There's nothing evangelist about it. It's a natural extension of just doing something new, trying something different, or just doing something to kill time.

Often times just talking about things gets people interested.

Maybe you missed the part where his friend used to play videogames? There's a difference between chatting about your hobbies, and playing salesman trying to drag them into something they lost interest in because you happen to like it.

Accept it, because people grow out of the hobby, and find new ones.

In your case I can only imagine the situation. Your poor friends probably had bloody ears during their console days until you got each and every one of them to convert.

I have a friend from college who currently only plays mobile games. Today I found out that he used to be a console gamer but quit because he lost interest. I also found out that he never gave the PC a fair shot and mostly just played on the PS3.

Of course, I explained many of the advantages that the PC provides over consoles. Anti-aliasing, 60FPS, mods, cheaper games etc. He knows these terms but kind of dismissed them in a way, saying that he doesn't think that they're enough to bring him back to his old gaming habits. I suspected that even though he knows what those terms meant, he never actually experienced them first hand. So I decided to invite him some time this week and show him what he had been missing out on.

The problem is, I'm not quite sure how to proceed with it. I have a fairly expensive build and I don't want to show him games on ridiculous settings then later mention that what he witnessed was only possible on high end machines. I want a realistic portrayal of PC gaming.

So, GAF, what's your advice, what would you do in my situation?

If he's not interested in core gaming anymore, why are you forcing him, do you honestly believe the technical details will bring him back? Do you really think "anti-aliasing/600fps" is a bigger factor than games themselves whether a person enjoys them or not? Ridiculous.

Show him Skyrim or Fallout 3 fully kitted out with all the best nude anime mods.

If that doesn't convince a person that PC gaming is wonderful then nothing will.

Socially awkward is trying to persuade a guy that left console games for mobile games that he should go the opposite route for arguments he quite obviously cares nothing about.

Do you know his friend? A see a lot of assertions here that only make sense if you knew him...

Grow up. Stop trying to get personal over an anonymous forum board. Idiot.

I don't think that any amount of technical improvements can really do it. Instead, show him a game that provides an experience you can't get on mobile. By this I mean something with a good story or amazing visual set pieces. I was uninterested in gaming for a while, but the game that changed that for me was Uncharted 2. Also, as has been said, make sure he actually wants to do this and isn't just humoring you

Try this

You're gonna be the guy that gets into Amway that everyone avoids, you know that right?

I haven't been able to read all the replies yet but has anyone said that you should find out what kinds of games he likes to play and make a selection from there? If he doesn't know what kind he likes then ask what kinds of games he plays on his phone and work with that. Then throw in a couple of genre's that he might like.

Here's a thought. Let him play what he enjoys playing. Why do you feel the need to force something on him that he's not interested in? Some people don't like PC gaming. End of story.

Just fyi, a lot of games with good stories on mobile...

It must be difficult to somehow live with both a superiority and an inferiority complex at the same time.

Yes, because what the OP describes is completely natural. Not like being a salesman or missionary for a specific subset of video games at all.

What kind of mobile games does he play? If he likes turn-based, strategy or RPG stuff then he'll find a lot of games to suit his fancy. I'd like to know why he gave up on core gaming, maybe he just doesn't have the time anymore?

Tell him it's a condescending elitist club and see how that goes over.

Sigh. There really was no reason for this.

Please explain how: "Come over and check out some PC games see if you lik 'em" is "forcing" someone to do anything.

I mean, some of you think it's equivalent to water boarding.. I just want to know if you are one of those people.

No, it's not all like being a "Salesman". Youa re out of touch with reality.

lol "grow up" and personal insults. are you rustled because people are offending your toys?

Well, this whole thread just went to shit.

OP: Just show him good games. Don't get bogged down with technicalities. If he likes it, cool, if not, no biggie. Unlike console GAF here, I'm not just going to asusme that you'll start pestering him about PC gaming for the rest fo your friendship. Good luck and have fun!

Done with this thread.

I suggested that my friend come over to take a look at my PC. He agreed. How is that forcing?

I wish people would convince me to be a PC gamer, but they keep saying to build one and that's the last thing I want to do. I despise even building a sandwich.

I got a mediocre non-gaming laptop and it's perfect. Can't play the spec-intensive AAA games, but for most indies, older classics, even some AAA games like Arkham City, Tomb Raider, and Skyrim, it's fine

Grow up. Stop trying to get personal over an anonymous forum board. Idiot.

Aren't you the guy that calls everyone a console warrior?

I'll just leave it at that.

Anyway I've made my point, that the friend should be left to what they enjoy, as they've already tried gaming and lost interest. It's ok for gamers to move on.

For someone who dropped consoles for mobile games, I imagine he doesn't care much about graphic. For a lot of my friends who started gaming on PC, the biggest pull was games prices during discounts, so you might want to point that out.

Lots of really insecure people that don't play games on PC in here. Huh. Totally unexpected.

Anyway, as others have said I'd show him Steam and maybe explain a few of its features to him (library sharing and the Market seems to go over really well with those that haven't used Steam) and show him stuff like Skyrim's integration with the Workshop and scalable and free stuff like TF2 and Dota 2. Don't bother with the technical crap.

Those creature comforts that PC players take for granted that are totally alien to those stuck in only the console space and even moreso the mobile space are really the biggest selling points for a casual player. If he's not into it or it bores him then you tried without (hopefully) being annoying.

You can show him all the cool things about PC gaming you want but he's moved to mobile games for a reason. They're cheap and it takes no effort at all to play them.

It would be important to fully understand why he lost interest. You appear to make the assumption that it was due to hardware limitation. This might not be the case since he still games on the cell phone. Perhaps he's just an extremely casual gamer

If he lost interest in action games, which make the bulk of a game console's library, and wanted to try out something more relaxing, PC is the perfect place to find such games. I would suggest showing Steam to your friend and then telling him about games like Civ V, Euro Truck Simulator, Goat Simulator, as well as other games like Divinity Original Sin, management games like Anno or even some roguelikes that can offer the quick ten minute bursts of fun he might be looking for. Basically show him the incredible breadth of the platform in terms of games.

pretty sure he mean phone games. maybe he's going for the freemium model so even 3ds/vita won't go for him. from this point of view a 600$ pc is out of the question
Lot of hardcore games on mobile, you know

Between ports (FTL, Papers Please, XCOM, Stealth Inc, Space Chem, etc) and exclusive games (Penumbear, Hoplite, Ending, Dark Echo, Zero Age, Autumn Dynasty, etc.)

I like how people assume he must be a causal gamer if he plays mobile games.

Show him a Asus ROG Swift PG278Q. That will sure revitalize his gaming love. Maybe a 980 as a present?

My girlfriend became a serious gamer when I told her how she can play in 144 FPS.

I play on every platform available (except mobile) and one of the advatages I think it's most important is the price of the games.
Yes, I have an huge collection of awesome games on steam and I can't believe how little I paid these games. Of course, you can't trade/sell anymore these games, but it's not an huge problem after all.

If you are trying to convince someone to play on PC because 1080p/60fps/ultra setting/elite/dat bechmark/etc, well, unless he is a young guy it's something that is not so meaningful.

Good luck !

Haha, I would rather play PC for Indy games. The last time I was impressed by PC was Operation Flashpoint 1 and F.E.A.R. From that moment on, we get 1080pness and 60 frames per suck. Seriously, what games deserve the powerful titan chips? I'm not waisting money on frames and res. I would pay good money for realistic interactivity.
