Copied (or coincidentally close) Character Designs

Desirée DeLite is nothing more than a Mona identity thief! Even rides a two-wheeler!

Whatever, Mona is better and always will be.

best joke character ever. wouldnt say hes really copied more like what happens when "fusion" goes wrong.

Both "chocobos" and "horseclaws" are based on a real animal. Ever heard of the Terrorbird?
Yeah but FF clearly ripped off Nausicaa in several aspects, not just the Chocobos. For example, in FF2 one of the kingdoms is called Paramekia (Torumekia in Nausicaa). And of course the series has a long tradition of ripping off other stuff, like the similarities to Star Wars in FF4, as well as the design of the black mages looking like Jawas.

Don't half of the Pokémon copy each other, design wise?
It's generally more of a concept thing with stats, typing, and game distribution.

For example, Zigzagoon and Ratatta look nothing alike, but Zigzagoon fills Ratatta's role as the common early-game low-statted Normal type.

Can't think of many Pokemon that copy the visual design. Audino comes to mind; very obviously reminiscent of Chansey. First gen had a lot of similar-looking bipedal Pokemon (Kangaskhan, Rhydon, Nidoking, Nidoqueen), but that's not quite the same thing.

God Hand from Ehrgeiz

Jin Kazama from Tekken
0-419.jpg

Interesting!

Jin came first, and Namco was involved with the arcade (original) release of Ehrgeiz so I'm guessing God Hand was a homage to Jin more than anything. Was directed by the guy who directed and did character design for Tekken 1 and 2 so there's a good chance of crossover there too.

EDIT: Yeah it seems to be on purpose, he's a Tekken amalgam. Never realized.

Dota 2 characters from Warcraft III characters because in DotA 1 they actually were Warcraft III characters.

Kijin Seija from Double Dealing Character and Matoi Ryuuko from Kill la Kill

Both characters even have roughly the same personalities/characteristics (Streaked hair which is mostly black hair with a single strand of red hair, messy-ish hair, rebellious, somewhat brash, have an end goal of taking down a fascist regime while allying themselves with the weak, has a habit of antagonizing almost everyone they meet etcetc). With the only major difference between both characters being that Ryuuko is
manipulated by pretty much everyone in Kill la Kill
and Seija
manipulated pretty much everyone in Double Dealing Character

(Kill la Kill spoilers)
Heck, Ryuuko essentially became Seija upon being forced to wear Junketsu late in the series.

Both of them have a best buddy (or closest thing to a best buddy) who is short, innocuous, and has a bob cut.

I'd chalk this up to more of a coincidence if anything. Double Dealing Character was released around 2 months before the first episode of Kill la Kill but both have had to been in development well before that.

The similarities are easier to see in the fanart below.

Came here for this. How is Dark Cloud anyway?

The first one is boring/mediocre, while the second is great and is a good argument for why there should be a third.

Fighting games are notorious for this.

Ken from SF and Ryo from KoF

Ryu from SF and Akira from VF

Hokuto from SFEX and Kasumi from AoF
I'll give you Ken/Ryo, but the other two similarities just seem to be because they're based on the same general archetype.

Mona is better, bit I just don't see it.

I don't remember any off the top of my head. Even in cases where two Pokémon are based on the same animal, they've always been unique from one another.

Someone mentioned that Kousuke Fujishima apes his own designs every so often and I've never paid it much attention. Though there's a noticeable resemblance between:

I thought you were gonna show Guy from Abyss and Flynn from Vesperia

Even if the spin off they are playing with that fact

No Streets of Rage character art yet? SoR is the superior series (COME AT ME BRO), but it very obviously ripped off designs from Final Fight.

Any game where Akira Toriyama did the art, because Akira Toriyama only has so many faces and hairstyles.

Which Dragon Quest Z character are you?

I'm quite interested to know if the design of:

is original, or where their inspiration came from - it's one of the few designs from FF so far that I find really amazing.

Doesn't help that they appear in games that are basically the same game with a different story, plus they share the exact same role in their games: the best friend and moral compass.

Orko from Masters of the Universe?

Me and Wario64 had a run in with the developers on Twitter about this. I haven't got the tweets with me but I recall them going a little on the offensive and saying that this is their first game and they shouldn't be judged for drawing from their inspirations.
