Copied (or coincidentally close) Character Designs

French videogames magazine cover from 1987:

Interesting!

Jin came first, and Namco was involved with the arcade (original) release of Ehrgeiz so I'm guessing God Hand was a homage to Jin more than anything. Was directed by the guy who directed and did character design for Tekken 1 and 2 so there's a good chance of crossover there too.

EDIT: Yeah it seems to be on purpose, he's a Tekken amalgam. Never realized.

It doesn't hurt, to mention the fact that Godhand in Ergheiz real name according to in-game story / instruction manual profile is Ken Mishima

I wonder where NT got their inspiration for NuDante

Wow, this is as bad as self-insert bullshit in crappy fanfiction writing.

I am mildly curious how the design decision for Dante ended up more or less resulted in Tameen Antoniades putting his own face on a pre-established character with an existing history. That might be have been an interesting discussion to listen to in it's planning stages.

The similarities between Noctis (FFXV) and the protagonist from Pandora's Tower are pretty remarkable.
I mean, he's basically Noctis with blond hair. They have the exact same face and hairstyle.

Capcom and Arika introduced V. Rosso in Street Fighter EX2.
In King of Fighters Maximum Impact, the main character Alba resembles him-

SNK introduced the character Vanessa in King of Fighters 2000.
In Street FIghter IV, Capcom introduced Crimson Viper who shares similar clothing or 'theme'

Oh and Rufus' design from SF4 is speculated by fans to be based on characters from Capcom's Slam Masters series

Whilst not released yet I feel that it's worth mentioning. Soul Saga, a JRPG game on Kickstarter that was sort of in a development hell last time I checked on it, has some designs heavily inspired (or copied) by various Final Fantasy games.

First, the original design of Mithos, the main character looks similar to Marché from FF Tactics Advance:

Then a redesign of him happened (twice) and it resembles Cloud from FF7 now (mostly just in the hair and sword):

In fact there are probably a lot of RPG games with designs similar to Cloud in the PS1 era.

Well I thought it was widely known that Boss from Snake Eater was based on Charlotte Rampling in Orca.

I posted this in a similar thread a whole back.

I have the feeling a lot of people missed this:

I'm not talking about straight bootlegs or homages, but a legitimate release seemingly copying another.

The Kojima stuff is obviously homages, just like Policenauts is Lethal Weapon and Snatcher is Bladerunner/Terminator.

I recall one character in some Pokemon-alike anime from the early 00's looked almost precisely like Aika from Skies of Arcadia. Hell if I can remember which show it was, though.

Nina from Tekken looks like a clone of Sarah from Virtua Fighter. They even kept the suit color and pony tail.

Also, Lau looks like Taopaipai from Dragon Ball :

Probably not a coincidence, since the moves and rules in Virtua Fighter 1 are quite similar to those of the tournaments in Dragon Ball (backflips, moon jumps, ring out, even some of the stages...)

This never sat well with me, but the way they changed Jill's outfit right down to her hair colour always seemd a bit off with me.

Jill's look in RE5 was actually inspired by some concept art of her from the original Resident Evil.

RE5 borrowed a lot of ideas that were scrapped from previous RE games.

Seeing how some game covers have been traced directly on movie captures, or examples like Silent Hill taking its level content from Kindergarten Cop, I wonder if those are really "homages" rather than just a quick way to gather sources to include in games (especially since all of those came from Konami).
Remember that those were pre-internet ages, getting reference images and stock photos wasn't as simple as doing a google search.

I always wanted a costume with "Kill You" written on the back for Lau.

When I was skimming around Suikoden stuff a few days ago I thought Seneca from Suikoden Tactics resembled Ada from RE4:

It's quite odd though because the two games came out the same year.

That just looks like two completely different females standing sideways to me.

Another is a well known homage with Tung Fu Rue being based on Master Roshi from Dragonball, right down to the muscular power up form and attack similar to the Kamehameha blast technique.

I'm quite interested to know if the design of:

xWP171d.jpg

is original, or where their inspiration came from - it's one of the few designs from FF so far that I find really amazing.

The glowing eyes on a short guy probably came from Jawas in Star Wars. Lots of games including the original Zelda copied this design (Wizrobes).

Miyazaki's work in Lupin predates Sonic the Hedgehog by more than a decade.

No shit. Also, the character that looks like Eggman? His mustache is ginger when it isn't being fried by explosions.

Aren't DOTA 2 units just badly copied Warcraft 3 units?

Valve very much wanted Dota 2 to just be Dota on an updated engine with fresh graphics. If they were able to Valve would likely have straight copied the characters from Warcraft 3, but obviously that's Blizzard's IP. In order to keep it as faithful to the original as possible they changed the character designs just enough to where it's not infringing on Blizzard's IP, but is still very similar. There's a few instances where the character's they created had to be changed, though. I believe Skeleton King had to be redesigned aesthetically. The result is that a lot of the characters look like HD slightly changed Warcraft 3 characters.
