Copied (or coincidentally close) Character Designs

You know how Bioware took "inspiration" from various sci-fi's when creating Mass Effect? I kind of feel they went a little too far from taking "inspiration" from Farscape. Keep in mind Farscape ran from 1999-2003, and Mass Effect started in 2007.

Collector General from Mass Effect 2
Collectors_Leader_Character_Shot.png

A multi-limbed alien controlling ships (a certain biological ship mind you), with complete control over various aspects of the Controllers.

Pilot from Farscape
Pilot4.jpg

A multi-limbed alien controlling a biological (and quite alive) ship with almost complete control over various aspects of the ship. Note that both the Collector General and Pilot share a similar head structure, and if I could find a better picture of the General Collector, similar limb and body structure.

Wrex (Mass Effect)
20100610185239!Wrex_Character_Box.png

An alien from a war torn race that specializes in combat and warfare with extreme warfare traditions. His starting battlesuit is blood red. Starts off with a "butt heads against" attitude with the protagonist only for it to bloom into a respectful "we're fellow soldiers and best friends" kind of friendship.

Ka D'Argo (Farscape)

Yeah...uh, heh. Just copy what I said exactly for Wrex. Seriously, I couldn't believe it when I met Wrex for the first time in Mass Effect and how he developed and I just kept saying to myself, "My god, they just ripped off Ka D'Argo beat for beat, holy shit!"

Liara T'Soni (Mass Effect)
Liara-Tsoni-Mass-Effect-3-Before-joining-her-consciousness-with-Shepard-as-an-intimate-gift.jpg

From the alien Asari race, these mono-gendered (though quite female) aliens have the ability to "meld" with other people - they have the ability to share a nervous system, "read minds" per se, and various other things.

Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan (Farscape)
Farscape_Pau-Zotoh-Zhaan.jpg

A blue alien race known as Delvians, they also have the ability to "meld" so to speak. She can share "unity" with other beings (two minds in one body, they can share thoughts, sensations, etc), and in her Order she's at a state where she can also share pain with another person. Though the Delvians aren't mono-genered (there are males and females), they do strike a very similar aspect to Asari.

Man, there are a lot more examples I could come up with including: Chricton vs Shephard (human commander of off put alien adventurers), Reapers vs Leviathan (biological alive warships), Saren vs Scorpius, etc. I think I'll leave it at this though. If you've watched Farscape and played through Mass Effect, I bet you've had similar thoughts as to mine. If you haven't watched Farscape, but loved Mass Effect, GO WATCH FARSCAPE! It's awesome, and you'll see where I'm coming from.

Not seeing it, tbh. I mean, really the first one sort of has the same head shape, sort of, but then the other two examples don't look much alike (the middle dude looks like a sci-fi dwarf). Plus, you know how many blue / green skinned people there are in sci-fi? A lot more than just Farscape.

He wasn't talking purely about just looks though, he explained each one pretty well.

Aw, god dammit, I was just going to start that TODAY. :C

ANYWAY, here's my contribution. A lot of stuff in The Wonderful 101 seems suspiciously close to a certain other homage to superheros and tokusatsu done by good ol' Kamiya...

Haha, oh man that is perfect. Yes, there is a Farscape movie in development and YES, everyone should watch Farscape right now. Leave work, abandon your current progress in anything and start watching.

Dr. Eggman makes an appearance in a Miyazaki directed Lupin III episode

Coincidentally, Sega-Sammy owns that animation studio, TMS (though, oddly, Banpresto—a Namco-Bandai subsidiary—has been a go-to company for developing/publishing the Lupin video games in Japan...but I'm not sure on the release timing there).

Yeah it's not purely aesthetic. It's also about what each race represents and can do. As for Ka D'Argo being called a "dwarf", ha! That picture doesn't represent his height very well - he's actually quite tall, and tends to tower over everyone. I'll copy/paste his race's description here:

"Luxan—a race of fierce, much-feared warriors known throughout the galaxy for their propensity to conquer anything or anyone in their path. Their first reaction to most every situation is to attack first and ask questions never."

Yeah, there are a ton of "war torn" races in sci-fi, and the Luxan aren't the only "war torn" species in Farscape. However, the personality similarities between Ka'Dargo and Wrex, the way they handle themselves, and even their initial impressions in terms of aesthetics are very similar.

Also, just to give a better explanation of what I was going for with Asari vs Delvian, here's a youtube video of Zhaan performing Unity with Chricton:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHmxfzcOr9g

(best video I could find to illustrate my point, sorry)

As compared to Shephard and Liara doin' pretty much the same thing:

http://youtu.be/-JBieyBS-dY?t=22s

Again, mind reading and what not isn't exclusive to Farscape or Mass Effect, but the similar characters doing similar things is what makes it stand out to me.

Man, I could crank out Farscape vs Mass Effect comparisons all day!

Fighting games are notorious for this.

Ken from SF and Ryo from KoF

Ryu from SF and Akira from VF

Hokuto from SFEX and Kasumi from AoF

The first two are just traditional martial arts uniforms. It's not copying so much as using a traditional design. The last one isn't even close. The first is an outfit for archery. The second looks like a shrine maiden. Their facial features and hair are completely different.

Ok, looks like I missed the part about intentional designs. In that case...

Phantasmaraneae, one of Bayonetta's infernal demons she can summon, looks extremely close to Phantom, a boss from the first Devil May Cry game. Both Bayonetta 1 and DMC 1 are directed by Hideki Kamiya so it's an intentional design since Bayonetta has a fair few references to other Kamiya games (and also Sega games).

Oddly enough, John Crichton was the character I least liked in that series. It sort of culminated for me in the climax of season 2, with
Crichton getting captured by Scorpio and it turning into two hours of Ben Browder overacting / twitching / spazzing out / moaning as his character gets tortured
-- enough, we get the point, move along with the plot already. I don't even know what role he's supposed to play on the ship -- he certainly lacks the confident poise and respectability to be the captain, and he's constantly getting walked all over literally and figuratively. I'm more used to sci-fi series where there's a character that's the undisputed leader and projects the appropriate presence, like in Star Trek(s), Firefly, Stargate, etc.

Fucking hell is KOS-MOS without blue hair.
Dude, massive fucking spoiler, what are you doing?!?!
Delete it, if some twat like you spoiled that for me when I played XB I'd be furious!!

It's more like Eggman looks like that Miyazaki character than the other way around.

Correct. The relevant Lupin TV episode is from early 1980. Of course, I'm pretty sure the original poster was half-kidding.

Miyazaki used a similar facial design in 2001's Spirited Away. But Dr. Lonebach from the Lupin episode is more similar to Eggman in "sinister-ness".

These are all very rote sci-fi tropes. You're going to see similarities to Farscape in every sci-fi setting because nothing about Farscape is unique. More appropriate to say that Farscape and Mass Effect both owe their archetypes to Star Trek (where I can check off every description above).

P.S. I've been especially sick of the "Gruff warrior-race character who starts off hostile and gains a grudging respect for the white man hero" shit since early childhood. Enough goddamn Klingons, please!

Thanks for the confirmation! Game ruined.

Any Gundam 08th MS Team fans here? Yeah, Jidan is totally Dr. Wily.

That's exactly the joke my friend and I made every time we saw him during the series. "He built all these robots, you know." At least the Zeon ones... ;P

Came here for this. How is Dark Cloud anyway?

The second games, aside from obnoxious and unlikeable characters and a sorta shitty story, is outstanding. I dare anyone to 100% it. I don't think it can be done.

Most people I've seen discussing it seem to think that Byakuya of Under Night In-Birth EXE Late is a clone of Yu Narukami of Persona. Can't say I disagree.

Eh?
It looks like a simple design, wouldn't be surprised if there were more.
School uniform and short white hair doesn't exactly scream original.

Kijin Seija from Double Dealing Character and Matoi Ryuuko from Kill la Kill

Both characters even have roughly the same personalities/characteristics (Streaked hair which is mostly black hair with a single strand of red hair, messy-ish hair, rebellious, somewhat brash, have an end goal of taking down a fascist regime while allying themselves with the weak, has a habit of antagonizing almost everyone they meet etcetc). With the only major difference between both characters being that Ryuuko is
manipulated by pretty much everyone in Kill la Kill
and Seija
manipulated pretty much everyone in Double Dealing Character

OMG. The coincidence fits Seija just way too much too. "You got manulated by everybody? Pff! I don't like that, I prefer manipulating everybody instead." (turning thing upside down)

It's just too fitting to be coincidential: very similar looking, similar personalities and have a story that is the opposite of each other's.
