Loving all the new designs so far. I'm surprised at the Koala though, I was thinking the reason they haven't had one yet despite being such a popular animal was they were saving it for a starter for the Australian based region. Could still happen, we already have owls, cats, and sea lions, and that didn't stop Alola's starter from making the cut.
Nevertheless, really nice designs. People came so close with the fanart for Iwanko haha.

I wonder if there is some sort of historical/mythological connection between Shiba Inus (or possibly just dogs in general) and carrying rocks around their necks.

In the game Suikoden III, there's a whole pack of Shibas you can recruit, and most of them carry around rocks, and it's never explained why.

The pokemon takes on traits of the trainer, the trainer mimics the pokemon's moves, and when the pokemon takees damage so does the trainer. It might as well be fusion.

Not so much- if how Greninja's been handled in the anime is any guide, it's the Pokémon taking on aspects of the trainer's appearance and becoming more powerful, with the caveat that the trainer feels the damage the Pokémon takes.

How they adapt this for the games, or even whether it's actually going to be a thing beyond the anime at all, is anyone's guess.

It definitely is an Akita. In fact, it seems like an American Akita considering its black mask. Makes perfect sense, since this breed is common between Japan and America, and Hawaii is a common ground for both countries in regards to influence.

As for being a Rock-type, now that's the interesting part. What if it symbolises Hachiko's loyalty to his owner? He stood in a spot for years, like a rock. And there's also the popular statue dedicated to Hachiko, of course.

I love koalas too, but that one in particular is kinda an ugly take on the animal. Not that I'm too fussed about it, one person's ugly is another person's cute. I defended Froakie like nuts last gen and Popplio is really growing on me too so I guess I just have different design preferences.

For the koala, one direction I can see them going in in is that of a heavily defensive, normal/psychic type. Not only is that a type with potential(girafarig is fucking trubbish) but it's only weak to bug and dark I think, with a ghost immunity. It's ability also seems great for defensive play. I'm basing the psychic typing on the sleep theme it seems it might have;
sleep/dreams are usually associated with psychic(hypnosis, Dream Eater, musharna etc). It's eyes are closed for one and koalas are famous for being zonked out on eucalyptus all the time, as well as what looks like little clouds on its cheeks. Oh and the name of its ability, almost forgot haha. I could see the stump transitioning into a pillow or a makeshift bed or even a pedestal for meditation.

That would be cool. If they added a physical equivalent to the move psychic (this thing better be a physical attacker with it's immunity to burn) then it would be a beast if it had the stats to back it up.

we call them scans but explicitly what they are saying is you cannot share private, paid -for content. it doesnt matter if the way we got the copies or pieces of magazine pages was literally through a scanner, its still a scan. a screenshot, picture, its all the same.

Those aren't alternate forms. They're just how they look when using attacks. They're as much alternate forms as these are

It's just how they look when doing their signature moves

So not new forms. That's why it hasn't been mentioned except on one site that did the exact same thing with both Kyurem and Genesect.
