Have a link for this? I've heard neither of these things...

Also, yes, everyone should be forced to watch this show. It should be shown in school science classes.

EDIT:
You sure it didn't do well?

Hm, you may be right. I tried to find the article I'd read, and the only one I'm finding about low ratings is satirical.

Probably no deGrasse Tyson if there is a season 2, though: http://www.kdramastars.com/articles/29786/20140722/cosmos-season-2-bill-nye.htm
Host Neil deGrasse Tyson said that even if there is a season 2, he may not be the host.
"We're all flattered that people are thinking [about a Season 2] but it's not clear that this was the kind of content you want to rattle off one year after the next,"
"If some years down the line after my life has recovered, maybe. But I'd like science to be shared by all. If someone else came up and wanted to host it, I don't have any ego invested in the visibility that hosting Cosmos brought to me."
With Neil deGrasse Tyson not hosting Cosmos season 2, some fans have demanded that another famous scientist should take over the mantle as the host of Cosmos and they want Bill Nye, The Science Guy to be the host of Cosmos season 2.
Cosmos fans over at IMDB have discussed who could be the host of Cosmos season 2 and Bill Nye was the one who "won" against other great scientific figures such as Michio Kaku and Richard Dawkins.

Michio Kaku is a pretty good choice if Neil's out, imo.

I just couldn't get into this. Loved the Sagan original, but something just felt off with this version. Watched the first four or five episodes.

fuck yeah

Lol, when did he say this?

It feels overproduced to me. Too much music, too many lame special effects and cartoons, and the anecdotes and stories just don't feel as genuine. I like Tyson in debates and on TV shows and stuff where he has to improvise and speak more from the heart, but his presentation of the material on Cosmos just falls flat for me. Listening to Sagan talk about this kind of material is a near-religious experience (ironically enough), and while I don't question Tyson's level of love for the material, he's not as good reading a script, especially when it has been so over-analyzed for the audience. The 43 minute episode format is shorter and it's FAR less dense as far as actual material because there are so many more computer animations and cartoons.

The original Cosmos is just on another level in every way except the production values, which actually feels more appropriate for such a show in a lot of ways.

Well said.

The cartoons are probably the weakest part of the show, but I guess they wanted to cut costs down for a show that they weren't sure if anyone would watch.

As for a season 2... I don't know what you would get out of it. Part of the reason why this version exists is to update the science a bit and to introduce cosmology to a new generation who might not want to watch the Sagan version. Doing another one so soon seems a bit unnecessary.

Stopped watching it after the first few episodes, got kinda meh after the first 2-3 (plus, yknow, Game of Thrones happened). Maybe I'll go through it all again sometime.

They had originally thought about filming the historical science scenes as live action at some of the actual locations. Although there was a ton of interest from actors wanting to be a part of Cosmos, they realized it would be impossible to coordinate the various actors' availability with the window of opportunity they would have at each historical site. So by going with animation, they were able to record all the actors who wanted to participate whenever their schedule allowed, and then they put the scenes together in editing.

Were all the people played by celebrities? I had no idea... but even then, that's not really what I would have watched Cosmos for anyway.

I will watch every single episode over and over again! I missed the live broadcasts! But I will eventually just buy the Blu-Ray set.

can't believe some of you "objective thinkers" and tyson worshippers can't apply some of your analytical ability to realize a joke

i'd agree it's a joke, but i'm not sure what your attitude is implying here. are you saying that the information people are getting from tyson is not worthy of praise?

Saw the first episode today. It felt a little...disorganized? The flow of information was a bit weird, but then I'm used to the NOVA format

Definitely going to keep watching it anyway

Tried watching it, but everyone in the house is sucking our limited wifi clean and no way I can watch this is less than high def. Fucking awesome so far, though.

i'm saying that people that tend to value science can't take five seconds to research something on their own by looking at a dude's twitter before jumping down his throat.

tyson is a good guy and i like what i've seen of the show.

Neil Degrasse Tyson is my Carl Sagan. NGT showed me how to love math and science and not to just accept the world for what it is. He has made me love to read and explore and gain knowledge that I would have otherwise ignored had I been lead down a different path. The man is an absolute rockstar in my mind.

Awesome, I missed quite a lot of episodes, and also I was kinda of disappointed with such a beautiful looking series, being on Fox mean only a 720p broadcast.

Thanks for the heads up. I wanted to watch it but never got around to it :).

btw, how does it compare to Carl Sagan's Cosmos? better? different?

Sweet just got done with the first episode. The visuals makes we wish I could watch it in 3D, NGT looks like a pimp whenever he walks, the animations are nice segments, and NGT is a good narrator. Nice throwback on Carl Sagan.

I quit watching after episode 2 when it was on the air (other stuff got in the way) but I've been mainlining this all night. On episode 7 now. It's really great stuff.

I don't think we need a new round of these every year, though. You'd wind up going over the same stuff after a while. Maybe do another round in 5-10 years or something.
