Is there anywhere to watch the original series? My only complaint so far would be that this version cedes too much to Sagan's original at times, making it seem like I'm missing something.

How old is the creationist movement anyway? I can't imagine the original show being panned for such ridiculousness

Creationism is the original theory for life's diversity, there has been some form of 'creationism movement' going on since Darwin first published on the origin of species.

The first backlash came from the scientific community, where the watchmaker analogy was first used, as was irreducible complexity. There was a strong revival of the creationism movement in the 1920's where it became associated with religious fundamentalism, which led into the scopes trial. It wasn't until 1968 however that the Supreme Court ruled the teaching of creation in schools as a violation of the separation of church and state. The Institute for Creation research was founded in the 1970's and that can be considered the beginning of the modern creation movement.

Yeah, the "Discovery Institute" is also a big places for "Intelligent Design" quackery. Man, the got their asses handed to them so badly when after discovery the good side was able to show that they just took a creationism book and did a global search & replace to swap "creationism" with "intelligent design".

Why do we know more mass murders than discoverers?

Is it because its easier for the average person to understand the acts of a killer versus say the understanding the significance of a scientific discovery?

I think the history bits are my favorite part. This history of science is almost as exciting to me as the science itself. Its our story of discovering ourselves. And its awesome

When I did my teaching internship last year in World History the most fired up I got teaching my students was discussing the Scientific Revolution. I love all history, but that time period has become one of great love to me as of the last few years. How amazing these discoveries were at the time and how much they shook the civilized world, and those who had the power over it at the time, to its core.
