could destiny be a misstep for sony?

The topic is the question. Given how divisive destiny has been? Some have loved it some have been let down. Is it the first misstep on sony's part? Given how much marketing and association they have with it?

As a casual hypothetically maybe I loved the ps4 , I liked halo i got destiny and it was the big new thing by bungie and sony and ps4 new era etc etc and i go like omg i dislike destiny... Could it even up having a negative impact in the long run?

(short run its def not ps4 sales are thru the roof)

The game has flaws but is pretty awesome.

Yeah pretty much, Destiny could end up putting MS back in the race.

You forgot "/sarcasm."

Truly can't tell if you're serious.

I've been a vocal critic of Destiny being mediocre and falling short of the game that Bungie hinted at (if not promised)...but to think a mediocre *multi-platform* game NOT produced by Sony would somehow have negative consumer attachment to one console but not the other and/or will have any impact on the console race whatsoever is just...silly.

Cognitive dissonance is a bitch.
Well some people really do all go out. Who was it in the review thread that said he brought it back to gamestop because it was an "unprecedented disappointment"? I mean that's some drama.

I too agree that Destiny is a fairly mediocre game, but if has moved a lot of consoles and software for Sony then I can't really see it being a misstep. I don't think Destiny has been an amazing critical success, but it sure has sold well.

it's a huge misstep, I bet they're regretting it. In fact, here's exclusive footage of Sony's head of gaming division right now

Why in the long term?

Well, in terms of betting "on the right horse", Sony appear to have bet on the wrong one. MS stuck with CoD.

Now that Destiny is out, reviews are average and everyone knows the game isn't all it's marketed to be, it's now just an average game associated with Sony. So this sales bump they receive will - in theory be the only one they ever get regardless of sequels and the like. Microsoft still has both CoD and Minecraft associated with their console.

At least that's the perspective I was looking at it from.

If the game had been received better critically and from players then they would have sold more bundles and copies I'm sure, but as it stands the game has delivered Sony increased hardware sales, so on that front it was successful.

In a longer term sense of course Sony needs to be careful which games they put their weight and brand behind. For all intents and purposes however, Destiny was an appropriate game to make that bet on, and I'm sure it will pay off in the long run.

Well I've never been as disappointed. But I didn't bring it back.

I was one of the people that didn't enjoy the beta, hence didn't buy the game but I have to disagree with this statement. Reviews aren't indicating that a game is average, but that it's good. Besides "everyone" doesn't know this, in fact there can be a disconnect between reviews and fan reaction. So far it seems that the majority really loves the game.

Well Sony bet for a chance to get their own Halo and became one of the biggest disappointments of all time. I don't think it's selling as well as expected either.

I'm not sure if Sony wants to keep being associated with this IP anymore.

Posts like this is why I can't stop reacting to this shit hyperbole about Destiny, I need to practice more and not fall for the trolling.

You obviously haven't played the game, and are just judging it based on what you perceive to be the consensus. If you have, and have formed this opinion from your own experiences, I would love to talk to you about your definition of average.

Or whatever you choose to define it as to fit your obvious bias/agenda. Because it seems like Destiny to you is just a game that exists for you to make a point about game industry politics.

Meanwhile, Mars is sitting here.. with its incredible vista. Wind blowing past me as the music kicks in and a legion of Cabal stream out of dropships. I guess I'll just try to enjoy this average game! <positive hyperbole>

I was surprised the thread was still open after this. Having the "'Destiny makes $500 million in first 24 hours" thread would have made this post perfect.

You're literally trying to detach yourself from reality. Seems like your going through the five stages of grief.

Stage 1. Denial.

There are almost no current-gen games that have brought a large part of my social network online to play and pls together. The game is clearly a success by any measuring stick that matters. Gamers like it and seem to be going out of there way to excel at playing it.

It has it's issues but both Sony and Activision were extremely smart to make this marriage happen.

Over a game that Sony didn't make? You can't be serious.

Sony's attitude of "we don't need a big first party game this holiday because we think of Destiny as first party!" was a mistake in my book.

They've never said that at all. Besides, Sony's always been a big supporter of 1st party titles since PS1.

How could it be a misstep for Sony?

1) The game moved a lot of consoles
2) Sony didn't pay for its development
3) Sony didn't even pay for exclusivity

If the game goes on to be forgotten, it's not even Sony's problem. They will just move on to the next "big thing". People who feel burnt from Destiny now have PS4's and will be looking for games. Backing Destiny was a damn good move, and pretty close to a sure thing for Sony and Activision... if anyone made a misstep it rests solely at Bungie's feet.

Then why are people still playing it in droves and not having the drop off Titanfall did after week 1?

Reviews mean nothing if people are enjoying the game and will continue to enjoy the game.
If you think for a second Destiny 2 won't be just as hyped, you're naive

Yeah, give it a couple of weeks and I'm fully expecting hordes of people to start protests in front of Sony's offices all around the world, with signs reading "You LIED to us, Destiny is only at 75% on metacritics. We want our moniez back" etc. Or something.

Wasn't Titanfall the most played game on XBL until Destiny was released?

MS didn't "bet" on CoD. That IP has been more associated with MS since the bigenning of last gen.

If you want comparisons for betting, try Destiny vs Titanfall. One of them involved a lot more than just co-marketing investment, and barely had an impact on HW sales.

This is such an odd point of view. Ghosts was a very disappointing game (among my group of gamer friends) but that in no way damaged MS instead it made all of us look at IW as the inferior team in the COD cycle.

Also the general reaction to Destiny with the gamers I play with has been very positive. The game has it's problems but it is a lot of fun (especially with friends) and in no way some kind of massive flop that disappointed everyone that played it and that will tarnish Sony with it.

Edit: Also I am very curious to see how COD: AW sales split between the ps4 & Xone even with MS "betting" on COD.

The only people who I see having a issue with Sony are former 360 owners.

But they probably will still buy the same multiplats they did on 360.

The fact is, nobody sells their console because of one mediocre game.

You fatal flaw is that you belive reviews are worth something. They're not.

Agree, but to be fair the major drop-off for Titanfall didn't really happen for about 4-6 weeks after launch from what I've gathered. So there's still time for Destiny to fall off a cliff relatively speaking. Even still, the sales numbers sound mighty impressive. We'll have to wait n see if it has more legs than TF I suppose...

It's not a win because some people don't like Destiny so it can't possibly provide any benefit to anything because if it did then those people would have to acknowledge that fact that the game did SOMETHING and that's not how people work.

I've been playing Destiny non-stop for the last week and a half. I think it's fantastic.
They are adding a new story arc on Wednesday. Hoping these will flesh out the story.

Not a new story arc, just some new bounties and opening up a new part of the tower.

No, Destiny is a good game but is easily disappointment of the year for me. I think it has hurt Bungie and Activision's credibility to some extent, but not Sony's.
