Could FFXV's character designs hurt it in the West?

Their outfits really grew on me over the last couple of years but i still prefer Noctis' original outfit from the early Versus days.

Doubt the Roen contract would allow that, at the very least let's hope Roen designed something with colors.

Here's the serious question: why did SE sign a contract with Roen? Does SE have to pay for their design? Or Reon have to pay for the promotion?

I think the whole thing is dump.

Yet it has a completely different setting and timeline.

Medieval chainmail and heavy plate armor isn't actually going to fit in the context of a game that has modern conveniences like Automobiles, Gas Stations, and locales that seem to be heavily inspired by a modern era European and Mediterranean-styled architecture with bits of futuristic tech thrown in.

Using Souls as a example is not even remotely comparable.

Unless you think would make sense for bunch of guys to wearing full medieval body armor while driving a stylish black Audi? Umm yeah.

Now I really want a game about a group of medieval knights in full plate armor on a road trip in modern times, stopping at gas stations and and diners and the like. I hope you're happy.

For me, I like when they go a bit nuts with the designs like in FF9.

Weird looking rag tag bunch.

Even FF10 characters just generally look more interesting.

When you look at these comparisons, you could say that the FF15 characters are actually more 'westernised' already. Basically, they look like douches who play CoD and listen to Atreyu - right down to the tribal tattoos.

Great post. Idk why people think ffxv dudes look weird. They are really boring. Maybe they mean they look too Asian?

Noctis is literally wearing joggers, which are a modern type of pant. I don't see how that's dated? Luna's hair also look particularly modern.

Honestly men's fashion doesn't change much so their individual style was probably one thing they didn't have to worry about being dated too much

EDIT: My only real complaint is that I wish they weren't all wearing black. But that ultimately won't hinder my opinion of the game.

A lot of things in FFXV take inspiration or are modeled after real-life examples (or even ARE real life things, as we nowadays know). IIRC Nomura likes Roen's designs and wanted to have those kinds of somewhat more luxurious real-life designs for FFVsXIII/XV's cast, so they struck up a deal. Nothing much more to it.

at present the character designs are the only thing that has me interested in FFXV after the public demo.

(ya, I'm still salty after it. Really wish I could get my hands on the Type-o demo.)

Someone in SE should keep an eye on Nomura's ideas.

Don't mind them. Really, only thing that bothers me is shirtless gladio. Like, fine, don't wear a shirt. Maybe he has a really high metabolism and gets too hot, whatever. But jacket over no shirt? Yikes.

I like some of the secondary character designs more though. Regis, Cor, Luna, Gentiana, Ardyn, grumpy scientist, Cid, all solid I think.

Also, from the way they interact (in Duscae, in footage), clothes aside these guys really aren't supposed to be "edgy." They're really down to earth and fairly goofy actually.

There's a sort of Shakespearian band of brothers we-happy-few vibe I get when I look at the cast, so I'm pretty excited to play the game. Also from my
female
perspective, this is the most attractive FF cast in ages.

If I get this game it'll be some combination of it coming to PC/(NX) and it being acclaimed enough to kill my reservations about its styling and its action battle system.

Though just the other day I was talking about to my sister as I liked some more of what that magazine said about the world map and I was surprised Noctis was already married. She said when she looked up Noctis: "The moment when you realize that something looked cool to you as a teen and now all you can do is laugh." That's on point I guess...

But I was actually kind of hoping that FFXV turns out and I buy it despite being turned off by the boy band aesthetic. So there's also that.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the designs and changing them for wider "western appeal" would hurt the numbers for people that are in it for the more anime aesthetic, and as much as you want to deny it, they are a VERY big part of the fanbase. Having the boring aesthetics of Uncharted would make it more a drop in the bucket more than having a bunch of bishounens.

What will hurt the game (and not just in the west) is the abysmal battle system if the Platinum demo is anything to go by.

I was referring to how they look not act. They look boy band 'edgy'.
The only one to look even remotely edgy is Prompto and even his behaviour makes it clear fairly quickly that edgy he is not. Noctis has a t-shirt & shorts. Ignis has a suit. Gladio is a big, bare-chested goof. Nothing even remotely boy-band-edgy-ish about them.

What will hurt the game (and not just in the west) is the abysmal battle system if the Platinum demo is anything to go by.
Abysmal it was not (you just suck playing if you think so) + it's still just a fraction of & extremely limited in comparison to what the full game will offer, though I do think that the Platinum Demo was a pretty bad way of demoing the game.

Like, pretty much everyone on GAF wants to suck Nathaniel Drakengard's dick. He made GAF into a bunch of dicksuckers.

You can't call that boring aesthetics.

I never said it was unfair or hard because it wasn't at all. I just found it clunky and not fun at all. Like a single step above Type 0's combat. I'd rather they go full stylish action game than this, and that's the last direction I'd want mainline FF to go in.

As much as I admire your effort, I think you can't change people's thoughts by your posts. Leave it to September 30th. If the game is good, people will buy it.
I myself has more confident of this game whenever new information drops.

Wow

Point was it's super derivative. OP using it as an example makes it seem more like he's talking about going for western appeal over mass appeal, which is generally fanbase-splitting stuff.

If anything, the designs will help the end game separate it from other overtly "Japanese" games on the market.

Many recent JP games have a distinct look that is more in line with the anime styling and that is great! Stuff like Persona rocks and many love that style in action :D!

But it can turn off people from getting game (just on Gaf, people commenting on games being too 'Anime' is a common complaint for a few JP games), so if a game is more 'grounded' character design wise, it can pull more people in.

Noctis and his crew? I can picture them driving around in the real world to some degree. Granted, they DO look like one of those 2005-era punk bands but I digress; I like their look and its from it being grounded in reality.

FF XV is cited as 'The Fantasy based in reality', or at least Verses XIII was. So, FFXV will have a large poll of gamers then any other FF and I would not be shocked if it is the highest successful FF game since FFVII.

Gameplay and other factors are completely up in the air, but just on presentation and hype alone, FFXV has a great shot at doing well and the character designs being grounded will help with that.

That's actually kind of a good point. They are more ethnically Asian looking than most of the FF casts of before. Mainly Noctis and the glasses kid.

Before they were more anime in general, but even then they had a lot of Western aesthetic to them, almost like a blend of Western/Asian.

Now it's more like Asian 20-year-old thing kind of looks weird in FF?

Stuff like Final Fantasy XII, and even arguably FF XIII, there was more European look to the characters. Vaan obviously did not look Asian. Maybe Penelo had a slight Asian look but was also more White/European with the face. Balthier clearly a white boi.

Even in the FMVs of the SNES/PS1 JRPGs like FF VI or FFVIII the characters look distinctly more "white" in general, not just skin colour, but faces. The most obviously Asian-looking was maybe Rinoa. Selphie and Quistis had a more international blended look.

Also looking at the now-defunct female character (forgot the name) from VS XIII first trailer or whatever it was, she was more just plainly European descent looking.

what might hurt the game are..some of the ridiculous "Terms"/ vocab the Final fantasy series tries to introduce...like remember FF13 with its awful awful vocabulary for simple words and weird ass pronunciation for shit....HEADACH all of it was just headachs

The Final Fantasy X casts look really East Asian, though. Did people think they look weird back then?

The problem with XV characters is they wear similar outfits, all black. It doesn't surprise me if people call them boring. Of course each has his own characteristic and personality, but in a glance they're all pretty plain Asian boys.

That's a good point too.

Rikku and Wakka were definitely very Asian looking, Tidus and Yuna too.

Lulu had a more European look. Auron looked pretty Asian as well, mixed maybe?

They looked way more diverse than this cast to be fair though. Lots more colour and variable stuff.

I bet Lulu packed enough leather in her dress that could be recombined to dress all of the main FF 15 cast.

For me?yeah i don't like the party members design and they all are wearing black,,, but the game can still be good,i'll give it a try.

I'm sure since disconnecting it from FFXIII they've dropped that shit like a hot rock.

I'm kinda searching for a possible reason someone might consider the designs of Noct & Co. dated.

The only thing I can think of is the color palette, because it's pretty...black, and that's about it. Though that doesn't mean it's dated as much as it just needs some more colors. Not even their personalities are dated, though they are cliched.

The character designs aren't what's going to hurt it, what's probably going to hurt it is the fact it's the (excluding XIV) first mainline Final Fantasy game to come out since the XIII trilogy. That was pretty much all the Final Fantasy most people had for the entirety of last generation, which was a pretty long generation too, and lots of people were none too happy about not only XIII being bad, but that a trilogy spawned out of it that really didn't fare much better.
