Could Switch carry on the Vita's legacy? (In a good way)

Switch isn't out yet dude. I think it will sell very well in Japan. It's also supposed to be very easy to develop for.

Being basically the only portable gaming machine that's not a phone (or running on very old tech), brisk Japanese sales for the Switch are basically a foregone conclusion.

It has to as it is the only option.

I think the bigger stuff like the project divas and such will make it over, but the more esoteric stuff less likely. Which sucks.

NIS is literally the only example and they'll probably change their tune after they see Disgaea 5's Switch sales.

Arc System Works - BlazBlue
Bandai Namco - Taiko Drum Master, Tales
Capcom - Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers
Koei Tecmo - Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII, Fire Emblem Warriors
Konami - Super Bomberman R
Sega/Atlus - Sonic Mania, Project Sonic 2017, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Shin Megami Tensei
Square-Enix - I Am Setsuna, Project Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest X, Dragon Quest XI, Dragon Quest Heroes I & II

???

There's more Japanese stuff announced for Switch now than there was for PS4 before it launched.

Needs to be proven that handheld style games will be prevalent on the platform. Not everything can be Zelda or typical console level. Through eshop I should see an abundance of small titles in addition to the console style titles. For some reason I feel it will be a long time before that happens

ehh hopefully for Switch. It will need all the help it can get and all those super niche Japanese dev games seem to coincide with people who actually like mobile gaming...so it is a good match. Anime style waifu-esque games..like a Gundam bride of Demon hero beautiful Saga 45 x eternal type games. All 4000 people that love them are also vita owners.

If not, it just gets indie games which release on everything and it dies in a fire since those don't drive system sales are more of like a "hey we also have...these! Please be excited!!" That is until they kill 3ds and those devs move on..again hopefully.

Setsuna coming on the Switch. Project octopath traveler...
The main new DQ also coming. Square Enix is obviously happy about the Switch.
Namco Bandai bringing the Tales of series could also be a big sign.

No I'm sure we can find other examples, just think about it a little more, you'll understand.
And really... the system is not even out yet !
Lots of games are not announced at all. I see far too much negativity in your comments.

It's not either "No support" or "every game from the Vita on it" you know...

No because it won't get the same support from third parties. Especially not Japanese ones. No matter how successful it is.

Umm, it'll get a lot of Japanese support. Western third party support is where we're all wondering what is going to happen

I think it'll carry on the Vita's torch, yes. Can't see the Switch being a massive success anytime soon but it'll likely become a platform for plenty of indie titles.

At the very least it's going to get massive Japanese third party support. Japan is obsessed with portability.

I agree it will get tons of indie titles, but keep in mind that for the first time literally ever we're getting someone like Bethesda to bring a game to a Nintendo platform. e3 will be telling either way I think. It will give us a better idea of what to expect from third parties in the first year. That first couple of shipments selling out could make some things happen just before e3 as well. Critical time for it to move units. We'll find out whether Zelda, ARMS, and MK8D will be enough before e3 from a first party perspective.

You just named a whole bunch of brands and developers who worked on 3DS. Pretty much all of those franchises appeared on 3DS.

Square Enix wasn't exactly Vita's biggest supporter.

I don't think you'll see many of the niche games being exclusive to the platform like it was on Vita. What I mean is that if you can put out a game on Switch, then why wouldn't you also do a PS4, PC, and Xbox version as well? If it's easy to port to the Switch then it should be easy to port from the Switch.

It definitely will for me. There are a ton of indie games I'd like to play, but would rather have on the go in addition to my tv. They'll get purchased for that reason alone.

At best you're misinformed.

So did Nis, and you mentioned it in your post. Either I'm tired or you don't make sense.

I wanted to make a dumb joke about smutty game but it's already been done :(

Those developers have already moved onto PS4. Switch is irrelevant to them.-

With the shit sales most Vita to PS4 projects have been getting you seriously don't expect them to at least try to broaden their audience if the Switch is successful?

Nintendo made the HD rumble for a reason.

Eh, the Senran Kagura's producer, Kenichiro Takaki, is very enthusiastic about the tech. These days just eye-candy visual look is not enough :)

I hope Switch sell well to convince Nihon Falcom to develop games in this console. Now Trails of Cold Steel 3 is just for PS4, they could approach to Switch to release the portable version there.

I'm really not.

Yup. Why would they?

A Nintendo platform attracts a different audience(or so they say).

Sony might keep saying the vita is dead but games keep releasing for it so really I don't think the switch has to carry on the legacy for something that isn't actually dead yet.

There is a very niche market that has reached a critical mass to seemingly keep vita software demand afloat. The console gets a fair bit of new monthly releases, soon enough Ys Origins releases on it and it's got a good amount of content lined up for 2017.

Maybe the devs putting out software for the vita will jump to the switch, maybe they wont, it all depends if the vita's base completely adopts the switch which is hard to predict since the switch isn't exactly in the same realm of portability as the vita.

I bloody hope so.

The 3DS certainly had the big name handheld titles that really drove sales, but when it came to quality and quantity of mid tier and budget/indie titles, the Vita was leagues ahead.

With Vita at the end of its life, and the combination of both Nintendo being if anything too open to indie games and the Japanese market uniquely still leaning heavily towards handheld gaming, I'm really hopeful Switch will end up being first and foremost a successor to Sony's apex handheld, rather than either the WiiU or even 3DS.

Although Nintendo really need to get their shit together when it comes to sales for that to happen, otherwise we'll end up with the opposite problem to what the Vita had, with loads of relatively cheap SD card storage that will never be filled because the digital prices are a rip off.

You haven't noticed the trend of games going Vita--> Vita with PS4 port --> PS4 with (shitty) Vita port ---> PS4?

It's been happening for the last two of three years.
This is Vita dying, in a world with no other Vita-like machine. A new variable is being introduced.

In many ways i am hoping it will. I know we won't see as many amazing Japanese games, but we will still get some really good games like Monster Hunter in return. Also, the trade off of some Japanese games for Nintendo first party might be worth it for some.

Yeah, it makes little sense that they would just remove Vita from the equation and expect PS4 to pick up the slack with regards to software sales. As Switch makes its way in and Vita fades out I suspect the ecosystem will be Switch <--> PS4

I won't waste a lot of time explaining why the Vita is so great, but those who own it know the basics. Not a lot of AAA blockbuster games, but it's a very robust handheld system with a ton of great games, many of which are 'indie' titles.

It seems unlikely that Sony will make a successor to the Vita, so in a few years the stream of games coming to it will ultimately dry up. This will create a void for someone like me, who while I have a PC and a PS4, and can purchase the indie titles I'd like to play, I prefer to play these types of games on my handheld.

Speaking strictly to the portable aspect of Switch, there's a couple of scenarios that could play out. If it surprises everyone and becomes a really big hit, the third party and indie title support will come and you'll essentially get a new Vita-esque system on steroids. If the system doesn't sell like gangbusters, there's a scenario where depending on the attach rate, we could see a nice stream of indie titles and the system could fill the Vita void, with the added bonus of AAA Nintendo mainline games replacing the Sony off-shoot properties.

Battery life is a big issue and could sink this dream of mine. I've also never dealt with Nintendo's online infastructure which seems like it might be a barrier to having such an environment. However I'm hopeful that whether the system does really well or not, Switch could prove to be a nice 'successor' to the Vita if Sony isn't willing to fill the void w/ a new handheld.

Any Vita owners eyeing the Switch as a potential landing spot?

Yes Switch could be a Vita successor, but if you consider that the primary house of indies is pc and that many Vita games are ported to pc the safer(no backward compatibility problems, no first and third party support problems and so on) and more natural choice is the GPD Win(a windows 10 handheld if you don't know), and in fact i ordered one.

I think it's expected at this point that Switch will inherit the development efforts that were historically going to 3DS, Wii U, and Vita, albeit probably not with the same number of games that we saw historically thanks to mobile.

More people are questioning whether it'll get anything beyond that.
Why couldn't we include mobile alongside Wii U, 3DS, and Vita for development efforts Switch will inherit? A console that also happens to be a multitouch tablet is primed to tap into the mobile market... and possibly give it the one thing that's kept mobile gaming from getting much lift with traditional gamers: a fully supported physical control option included in every box.

Much like they realized they could no longer take on the more powerful consoles and came up with Wii, they've now realized they can no longer take on mobile and have decided to embrace it with Switch. Nintendo is developing mobile app games for the first time ever, right at the time it also happens to be releasing a tablet console. It's not a happy coincidence, they're building a long-term platform.

That might have made a difference if Switch arrived two years ago but it didn't and the audience for Vita and PS4 is seen as much closer than the audiences of Vita and Nintendo platforms.

3ds had a ton of japanese 3rd party support. This is nonsense.

The support 3DS and Vita got were not interchangeable.

Let's be real: the vast, vast majority of mobile games are not coming to Switch.

The majority of Vita games might, though.

Vita type support is nice, but 3DS type of support is much more important. Games like Monster Hunter, SMT(already announced) and Yokai Watch are more important than almost everything that Vita got together.

This. And even if the Switch got Japanese support like the Vita, it still wouldn't come to the West. (Yakuza HD I&II for the Wii U, the DS Tales of games, a lot of third party 3DS games or they are extremely late like Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII).

About Switch audience, do you believe it will be more diverse than it used to, thanks to the adult/sexy hardware? Just today we had a thread showing lots of PS4 & Vita owners saying they are getting Switch day one.
