Counter Strike Is Not Actually Ten Years Old Today

De_dust 2

God, I can believe how many matches I did on this map. Good times. Started right before the transition to Source and then played for around 2 years. Met great people and had a fun time. Will never forget.

Was around 10 years ago for but it somehow feels like it was longer ago.

Counter-Strike is the pinnacle of competitive FPS.
Its one shot killing bodyshot sniper rifle and lack of rocket jumping makes that claim dubious. But it does hold the crown under the veil of FPS games that try to incorporate some guise of realism.

Here's to more years of snotty pubbers playing dust endlessly.

cs_mansion was da bomb

Tapping crouch to see over the wall in ct spawn and headshot the t's in the windows... fun fun fun

So I was going to record some nostalgia but my FRAPS wouldn't work so I took some pics instead.

If you prided yourself in anything while playing CS, what was it?

For me, I prided myself in accuracy. Usually 30%+ and being top 10 in a server.

Keeping a k/d ratio of 2:1 on the public servers I frequented.
Being in the top 5 on the public servers I frequented.
Winning a 1vs8 situation on a public server. Me and my awp against 8 people rushing me, it was such a rush of adrenaline to actually win that.
Going 26-0 once for an entire map (30 min map time).

Last thing would be playing against a guy belonging to the Swedish elite, and said guy became convinced I was one of the players in NiP, Eyeballers or SK because of my performance against his team in a pcw (think you in NA called it a scrim). He didn't believe me at first either when I said I was somebody else. Made me realise I had gotten really good at the game.

Yeah, I could never get into playing CSS after playing 1.6 and prior versions for so many years, but the transition to GO has been painless for the most part (I WANT SPAM SPOTS BACK)

de_dust
cs_deathmatch
bind for one press of everything you need.
counter-strike was so iconic, EmptySpace called the guns by their menu keys. 4-1 was the ak47 (as in four-one). snipers were the 4-5 and 4-6. smg was 3-1, big-ass machine gun was the 5-1, and so on.

rocket jump, fuck that we got strafe jumping when valve don't fuck us over on updates.

Awp has quite a few flaws. Only is one hit in some areas and most of the one shot guns require hs and considering the hitboxes if you do it you should get rewarded for it. Awps suck in short to medium range fights even if you can no scope due to firing rate. Flash bang and awper in camping spot or pick spot usually is death in decent competitive matches.

Oh God, Counter-Strike.

At my college, all you had to say was "CS?" or "Play CS?" and you would find college kids willing to play all day and then get an hour of sleep before their 8 am class. We would have LAN tournaments (I placed third or fourth in one I played in) and it was just amazing. I would then play on a server with some guys from Atlanta with my RA. Although everyone liked de_dust, my favorite was always cs_italy and de_train.

I would had a better GPA if it were for that damn CounterStrike! ;)

Good times.

Yeah, I knew it was wrong for sure. On 9/11 2001 I was in Bangkok and my flight home got canned because of the attacks, so I went and played Counter Striker in a internet cafe to pass time. So I knew it was more than 10 for sure.

blast from the past... back in the days when the guns stayed on the ground when you died, and when the next round started it was a mad dash to grab what you could.

yeah, i started playing I think .3 when that was in. It was hilarious to see the death ball of people trying to pick up their guns.

Had fun playing this in college. I had fun with pretty much all of the maps though italy was a personal favorite if only for the chickens.

I was partial to the deagle & m4 as my guns.

In 2000 I was playing alongside Jess Cliffe (one of the creators) in the Ambler Johnston dormitory at Virginia Tech where we both lived... [cW] Clockwork

Confused where this "Official Ten Years Old Today" is coming from...

Us old geezers should discuss cs_docks! or 1999 room-over-the-garage LAN parties.... ahhh nostalgia, those were the days.

How about cs_bunker? I loved that map!!

CS GO is a very good game but man I miss the big clans and players from 1.6. ZeX, 3D, the old Euro clans, the Brazilians that would go to CPL etc and so on, so good.

When I played Counter Strike day and night the menu looked like this.

I remember when it used to look like

back when the screens changed per release

Also, cs_siege, back when it had the APC, was THE best shit ever. I loved hiding underneath the elevator like a sneaky fucker.

Oh shit, another map i forgot about. that map released in one of the beta's along with the Sig commando assault rifle.

I am feeling the feels pretty hard... might shed a tear.
Thanks for the thread OP.
\edit: ^ splash screen above.... even more feels

Oh man, that image really takes me back. That's.. beta 7?

CS was so good.

Remember when "gun running" was a thing in CS? =P

There would always be some goof who would drive it into the ravine though.

I remember the early versions of Siege when people were able to camp in the sniper tower on the CT side.

Ice world was perfect for me as a beginner: just one big box to run around, grabbing weapons, and shoot the hell out of one another with minimal camping. And of course given how small the map was, there was nothing like being run over by the other team and only to get shelled with bases the next round.

Yea I think it was 7. I was trying to find an image from like 3 or 4, but I couldn't find it (it was like crosshairs looking at a fire escape/window)

edit: maybe I'm mixing the splash screens for 5 & 1 together :p

oh man, great feels just came back remembering that lol

I decided to try this game out back during GO's beta last year.

This shit's crack, yo.

cs_militia my favorite map

Same. Office was fun map as well. Mansion and 747 were also good maps but didn't get played too often.

Hated Dust since it very difficult map if you had uneven teams. Dust 2 on the other hand slowly became one of my favorites.

CS 1.6 pictures make my heart smile with glee.

I actually love CSS and GO as well.

On a side note, did anybody ever happen to get into surfing in CS? Man, the amount of time I put into that too...

No it isn't. Try harder.

i just cant stand the models, the weapons, the sounds the overall impression of the game.
Sad that i came so far but when i play GO i dont feel like im playing counterstrike. what have they done to the shooting. The satisfaction of killing someone is just not there. its so stale..

Its just not the real deal for me.

I remember being a terrorist in siege, gathering all the hostages and running them to the counter terrorist start point, hiding in the tower to snipe the CT's when the finally realized the hostages were missing... then waiting for the timer to tick down to about 3 seconds at which point i'd jump from the tower into the canyon, but time would elapse before i hit the ground and died... Victory.

The best online fps of all time. Yes, even better than vanilla UT and Quake 3.

I started playing in the summer of 99 if I recall correctly, I remember that one of the very early vip maps was set in the jungle with machine gun nests on a bunker (?) Anyone remembers that?

The game started getting too serious and WAYYYYY too hardcore e-sport after a couple of years and that's when I lost interest. They started removing maps from the official lineup because they were not super serious e-sport worthy. I kinda stopped playing when they removed cs_thunder from the lineup, and that was shorthy after vip mode was removed.

VIP mode was so much fun!
