Covenant or Locust?

Has it reached a point where these enemies are commonly known amongst gamers? Well regardless if they aren't--who do you prefer? The lame aliens who happen to be humanoid in Halo or the bug-mutant baby spawns that live underground in Gears of War?

Sterile looking obviously Japanese inspired aesthetic?

Or,

Road Warriors!

Covenant have spaceships and really cool technology. Locusts are just roid ragers living beneath the earth.

Nah, Locusts have way cooler tech. Digger Launchers? Boomshields? Torque Bows? Giant Poisonous cleavers? They're also incredible beast masters that can tame the wild into crazy killing machines.

Covenant easily for me. Never really cared for the Locust.

Elites and Hunters are some of my favorite enemies in any FPS game.

Covenant. Can't beat glassing an entire planet.

Even in terms of looks and design the Covenant are quite varied,

Covenant. As per the first post.

Both the Covenant and Locust are fun/challenging to fight in terms of pure mechanics and behaviour, though.

The Covenant are much more than just the (badass) Elites. Made up of like 7 different alien species. That variety alone makes them way more interesting as enemies. Covenant has the more interesting weaponry. Locust's origin story makes them more boring retroactively as well.

Also, fucking beam swords, fam.

not even a debate or a question.

Locust are uninteresting and basically orcs when you boil down their characteristics.

Covenant have a bunch of different alien races, an interesting concept for their galactic conquest and sweet ass weapons and ships.

Locusts, their is just something fantastically and intimidatingly primordial about their tech and tactics. I can't get enough of their weird salvaged tech and the nightmare beasts they use in combat.

The Covenant were great enemies. They were all very diverse in their roles and abilities, not to mention completely threatening. Battling the elites put you on your toes, as did any moment where you had to face off against a hunter. The brutes couldn't emulate their badassery and don't get me started on the flood.

In terms of who would win? Covies easily.

In terms of who is cooler? That I dunno.
I like the lore behind the covenant more. Better than some queen controlling a horde of orcs. But I do like the uniqueness of the locust. The covenant is just a bunch of alien races using the same tech. But locust biology is itself a weapon for some of their units.

But whom is more fun to fight? The covenant EASILY.

Covenant, more variety, very distinctive design.

That and they are way more developed as a culture than the Locust in Gears of War are. Not that I blame Gears of War for not getting into that.

And grunts are the best cannon fodder ever in games.

Covenant could only defeat the Locusts if they were hiding in their space ships pelting them from the sky.

Otherwise the Locusts would wipe the floor with the weaker Covenant.

So I can see you're obviously completely unbiased, OP...

Locust of course

The halo enemies look and sound so lame that I can't take them seriously.
I've played a few halo games over the years and always had to stop after like an hour because the enemies look like toys and sound like annoying children. Hated that

The locust look cool and are a brutal and threatening enemy. they are awesome

Nah, no chance would the Locust beat the Covenant in a ground war.

The Covenant are also far, far cooler.

What? Does this not look threatening?

I'm not sure about road warriors, Gears enemy design all looked right out of Lord of the Rings and it was great. don't care about covenant outside of Elites and Scarabs. Locusts had much more variety actually. I liked Gears 2 campaign because of it, you constantly see new things to fight. First game was similar too, 3 with lambents was just boooring in comparison.

This is just straight up not true...

Elites and their swords are awesome. The rest not so much in terms of design, but they do have the better AI and are as such more fun to fight (even though the hit feedback on the Locust is better).

The Locust have all these big beasts though, which is pretty cool. Gears also has better boss fights.

The covenant as an enemy race are a lot cooler and more varied, and they are a lot more interesting as far as narrative is concerned.

As another poster posted, the locust really are nothing more than orcs. The needler by itself is better than any piece of tech the locust have.

Covenant, more verity and its fun to take then out. Specially Elites, first bring down the shield and then one headshot to kill. I always found Locust to be bullet sponge

u sure? wanna count ok here you go:

Locust:
Drones, they have like dozen of classes themselves.
Therons, again with several variations.
Boomers, they have like 6 variations too that are very very different enemies actually.
Kantus.
Berserker
Brumak
Wretches
Corpser
Reaver
Ticker
Bloodmount
Shrieker
Seeder
Kryll

covenats:

grunts
suicide grunts
elites of different colors
hunter
drones
jackal with shield
jackal with sniper
brute
brute chieftain
engineer?
prophets? lol

vehicles if you want to count

banshee
ghost
scarab
chopper
wraith. I dunno what else they added in 5. I haven't played that.

Covenant and it's not close. Every enemy type feels distinct. There is a clear hierarchy among species and a rank structure within Elites and Brutes. In the first game when Cortana mentioned Covenant black ops teams coming in to clean up after the flood trying to repair a downed ship, you start running in to black armored grunts with fuel rod cannons led by powerful elites, for example. The Locust are cool and all, but they feel like glorified bullet sponges in the first game. They get much better in later games though.
