Crackdown 3 uses cloud-based physics processing to enable environmental destruction

While using Google can sometimes be funny, I fail to see the gaming context.

Try playing the "find 6 connections between everything" game. Tadaa, most powerful console of all time. Amazing cloud tech.

A raspberry PI will gladly out do that based on your qualifier.

That's tantamount to saying that because a game exists doesn't fully utilize the potential of a platform reduces said potential. The "console itself" includes the platform which enables things like Crackdown's destruction. The new title is just as distracting since it belittles the very real potential that we can see realized in these demos.

The server side of things is just as applicable on literally any other gaming device had they had a deal with microsoft. The exact same things could be done on 360 had MS had the need back then.

It has nothing to do with the actual console, and everything to do with the servers.

A more realistic title would be "Microsoft's server farm allows Crackdown 3 more destructive physics than ever before"
 
Almost impossible, give that Sony is a much smaller company than Microsoft. Still, I think Sony would rather figure out some solution rather than utilize their competitors' own tech.

Why would they need to, there's a few hundred gigaflops of extra huma driven compute available on every ps4 out there?

It is about offloading complex math in an existing context almost seemless onto a remote server while the game itself is running locally which is new. I don't know where the marketing is, though.

Thank god for that. I really tip my hat to realtime worlds..(are they still in charge of this franchise? I haven't played the Crackdown series since the first one, what fun) for deciding to go with an offline choice component.

Otherwise it just sets a very bad tone for me where everything is always online due to "Server side CPU calculations", even if the game itself wasn't even using them to any real effect.

I suppose if you're just looking at the GamesRadar article and its title, sure. Honestly this thread should be about the use of cloud computation to allow for large scale physics calculations in the game but with journalists/sites wanting hits and being impressed with the behind closed doors demo, we got the hyperbolic statement which lead this thread. It's unfortunate because the tech here is really cool and deserves the discussion.

The game is being made by Reagent Games and Sumo Digital. Cloudgine developed the engine.

Participating in seti/folding at home calculations while displaying the results doesn't make my pc the most powerful of all time. There's the marketing.

For multiplayer games, it definitely does have a very positive implication on what MS can do utilizing those servers, they should be commended. But i won't fully congratulate them on making me a believer until they can ship the product.

So you are here at neogaf, still a junior, so you have not posted so much but i´ll bet that you have been lurking for a while and ever so often you go in and check neogaf. So in one way or another, you have internet access. Whether it is from home or by phone, you have internet access (obviously).

And if I can assume even more (based on how people are today), then I would guess that you prefer to be in places where there is some form of internet connection (IC from now on). Either through wireless or mobile network coverage (because hey, we have to be able to access neogaf 24/7 right?). So, even if you would have a cottage in the woods, you most likely want to have internet access there (because nowadays, we can barely do without it, right?). And if you for whatever reason would find yourself in a place without IC, then perhaps console gaming is not your top priority in that situation.

And if we look at the state of technology today, more and more things are getting connected and/or require IC to even work, and I would guess that this includes stuff that you already own (like a mobile phone, for full funtcionality, you need IC)

And yet, you are bickering about IC on a console when nowaydays, in one way or another, you have it at home (because as stated above, people nowadays need internet connection wherever they are)

Your argument is stupid as hell, I mean.. I could say stuff like: "Buhu, I want VR to crash and burn because this is Illuminatis trojan horse to make people stay at home and live in a virtual world instead of going out in the real world.. bu hu bu hu".

Oh yeah, and even if XboxOne was more powerful, you can still add Cloud Power for even more impressive stuff.

Fair enough. There's a difference to being skeptical but willing to see it out and those who write it off because of the word "cloud" being mentioned. We'll get an idea of what they're planning for public use next summer once the beta hits, which I guess will be right around E3.

I did state that I made assumptions on your internet usage behaviour but you went all in with how you wanted this tech to crash and burn just because of trojan horse issue/did not fit with your wishes. And then you added stuff about shitty hardware as if that would be the sole reason MS added this cloud compute stuff, to offset just that.

And this concern of yours for this technology is only valid for you (or people who are not connected at all. Which, if you are into gaming today, you most likely are anyways).

Well that requires double the tech on each server, a GPU and a CPU.
A lot more bandwidth, worse image quality, it couldn't be 1080p60fps.
The latency would be much more impactful and painfully noticeable.
There would be no 'game ownership'.

This enhances the experience gamers already know, streaming is a different experience entirely.

If this tech just sounds like 'servers in a room' to you, then you should stop making quantitative remarks about it because it's much more than that.

Well the local console is still doing work, they're just adding to that. By not going a full streaming route, they can also keep bandwidth needs down. For instance PS Now has a recommendation of 5Mb/s minimum for play. Dave Jones of Reagent said they're aiming at 2-4Mb/s required for Crackdown 3. Xbox Live for the Xbox One has a minimum requirement of 3 Mb/s.

That said, I do expect both Microsoft and Sony will move to game streaming as a main form of delivery in the future as the infrastructure continues to grow, which for some people is a whole other can of worms we shouldn't open in this thread.
 
That is interesting, although I take exception to journalists linking the added benefits of cloud computing to the console potential (it would be like commenting similarly on an old machine because of the addition of a RAM pack). The question though is : Suppose the cloud computing takes off, and suppose that the different players (publishers and manufacturers alike) join the ranks of this MS studio, and experiment with different ways of exploiting the infrastructure...would that mean the death of traditional supports as we know them, and the ushering of a new connected era? I am an old jaded gamer, so the ineluctable transformation kinda scares me a little bit...lol!

So you want
- higher input lag
- worse image quality
- higher bandwidth dependency
?

I don't think that route should be taken unless absolutely neccessary (see Dragon Quest X which runs natively on WiiU and PS3/4 but has to be streamed to DS).
 
Impressive tech that I don't want! Let's hope it stays exclusive to the multiplayer. Otherwise when Microsoft decides it needs that computing power for something else and switches of the servers your singleplayer will not work anymore.

It's dynamically spun up (servers are allocated as needed based on some crazy alogrithms and such) and the single player campaign is offline.

I'm an old school gamer too, and I kind of think things like this might be the beginning of the end for the traditional console itself.

I'm impressed. Not an XBone owner and actually not that interested in Crackdown itself.

But as a tech demo it was pretty fascinating. This tech is something that'd be hard to make "exclusive" as such, so from my POV I'm very excited to see what other devs and publishers do with this technology.

Obviously Azure is the key for Microsoft, but I'm guessing anyone else can achieve the same thing as long as they have enough servers? Which I'm also assuming that this means it'll be a game for the big boys only.

And that's actually what has been driving technology in the XXIst century.
It is indeed a small wonder that you can find your way a huuuuge amount of data on any low-performance device, because Google set a performant search/indexing engine on servers available to everybody. And it is a small wonder that you can talk almost naturally to similar devices and it will understand because the complex speech processing is done on external servers.
In the end it's all about what can be done, not "who gets the medal of the most powerful hardware". What it shows is that the power of local hardware becomes less important with time, as long as it can quickly retrieve information from "the cloud" (talking about technical applications in general, not only games).

I'm pretty sure MS would be delighted to give any developer access to that technology, including their direct competitors, as long as they're renting their Azure servers. It would be a goldmine for them, getting a constant cash flow from software running on all possible platforms. That's what they've been doing lately anyway, MS software and tools are not only exclusive to MS platforms now.

Lmao at calling this half-assed. Just doing everything somewhere else and streaming it is half assed. This actually uses the available power of the console and only calculates what can't be calculated locally.

Hardware an old-fashioned concept lol. I think pretty much every tech device I own would imply otherwise, from my games consoles, to my mobile phones, PC, laptops, tablets, TV's et all. Last time I checked, better hardware in pretty much each and every single instance and product, meant better results, be it in speed, processing, resolution, overall performance, features, rendering or whatever else.
 
Makes sense. I think even MS themselves said that there was a percentage allocated for the XBox division. There's no way they would allow it to run rampant at the expense of their other customers. To be fair though, they keep on growing their cloud infrastructure to the point where I wonder if that would ever become an issue.

It will always be an issue; all information transfer, no matter how small, has an energy cost - which in this case will be a monetary cost also - and somebody has to pay for that. I'll take a guess and say that MS won't be the ones paying for it.

I've seen a few posts similar to this and I feel obligated to inform you that you're missing the point entirely.

The original title stands.

At this point, to my knowledge, there has been no other game demonstrated that has this level of technical achievement.

Also this is only capable of being handled by the Xbox One. Therefore, (do I even have to spell it out???) at this moment in time on the planet Earth the Xbox One is the most powerful console ever created. The means to pulling this off are meaningless; It's only the end results that matter. Until anyone shows me a more impressive demonstration on a different console that's the fucking conclusion I mean how is this even controversial?

I'm getting tired of reading everywhere (not GAF, GAF's pretty good) about how I'm stupid for paying more for an inferior product. Even without knowledge of the cloud I was confident in my decision because I'm mainly interested in the exclusives, but this revelation is just so dang juicy to me after all the ridicule Xbox has endured.

Absolute fucking gold. Why'd you change the title? I'm sure no one would have minded if there was a thread titled that the PS4 was the most powerful console after that U4 demo. And I would have agreed with them.
 
the comments about the graphics... i'm just amazed , really amazed. people rather have pretty flowers with prescripted destruction rather than a fully destructible experience in real time??? for multiplayer no less!?!?
