Cracked: 7 Reasonable explanations for looking like a hipster

So does anyone else think that the hipster term is really some sort of invisible eldritch abomination whose purpose is to make everything live in some sort of paradoxical state of self-loathing contrarian circlejerking and peer pressure, that if left unchecked will slowly consume the entire world to the point where everyone will be afraid to even breathe in fear of being marked a hipster, thus destroying civilization and turning the entire planet into a literal personification of... I don't even know.

It just really seems like, from a position of a person who has never left his house in years, just merely existing means you're a hipster. I don't get it.

If you change what you do in the fear of being called a hipster I feel really sorry for you. Grow a pair and do what you like.

Where in his post did he imply he was changing himself out of fear of being branded a hipster?

Rolling looks like a complete mess. Not much else you can do but cuff if you buy raw selvage denim as you're never really sure how much the inseam will shrink. Better to cuff then hem later than hem and then have them shrink to be too short.

How about we take a 6-month break from the word 'hipster'? You know, sleep on it, come back to it. The internet will be a barren wasteland for a few days, having run out of all the words it knows to describe people, places, ideas and art it doesn't like, and uninterested in talking unless they can talk about things they don't like, but we'll find some new words.

I don't know if it's as simple as that. I hate country music and Amish fiction - neither is particularly "hip". I love thick-framed glasses and facial hair, neither of which I'd describe as inherently "hip".

Meh, I'm a hipster and only the skinny jeans thing applies to me. These lists are always just the most general strokes of the mainstream. Pity.

Cuffed jeans have a cuff on them. They look horrible. Rolled jeans, as long as they aren't baggy in any way, look more natural.

I hope we're thinking of the same thing anyway... these are cuffed jeans in the UK:

Damn, are you living in the 90s?

This isn't the 90's. This is the world we live in now. Cuffed jeans... they are very real.

And if I rolled my jeans up so they looked like the picture you posted, then surely the difference is negligible.

Aside from pants for toddlers, I haven't seen them at all.

What the fuck is that? I have not seen those on anyone over the age of 3.

What Alucrid showed is what I am talking about.

Skinny jeans and 80s theme t-shirts are hipster?

Wait that is how I wore my jeans in highschool (mid 80s).. I'm a fucking hipster?

That is one silly list from someone who's way too paranoid about hipsters.
I'm certain some people out there nervously check their closet and look under their bed for hipsters every night before they turn the light off.

People outside of major cities really have no idea what a hipster really is. For example, a normal, stylish person in NYC would be considered a hipster by pretty much everyone in the Midwest.

I remember back when I lived in Michigan, people used to call me a hipster for wearing a black v-neck with denim. So clueless.

Yup. I live in backwoods northern New York and it's the same exact way. Well, they don't say "hipster" but they don't understand the first thing about style or fashion. I need to move.

It was supposed to be a generalized "you." I realize it was worded poorly

me. I listen to music on records, I ride a fixed gear bike, I enjoy reading at coffee shops, I listen to bands no one has heard of. I don't do any of it to be ironic or for attention or anything, but those are interests that are associated with hipsters so it saves me time describing myself.

I get a lot of her (and dudes) type (just the clothing I mean) at my school. I don't mind it, it would be thoroughly boring if people didn't dress in different styles. What is actually grating though is when they have a shit attitude to match.

There's a 50/50 chance you're a hipster. Right now I think it's best to spend time with the people you love before they become too mainstream for you. Be strong.

I was listening to W.A.S.P. today, does that help or hurt?!?!?!?

I've found that it wasn't just the Internet, actually.

I don't have a problem with hipsters per se, I just hate when they get so full of themselves. Same problem I have with Vegans, Vegetarians, weedheads, white trash, hoodrats, hippies, super liberals, super rightwing people, audiophiles, cult of apple members, i-compile-my-own-kernel linux people, people that want a nanny state, smug atheists, come to church with me religious people, Superman fans, Cassandra Cain fans, twilight readers, Final Crisis fans, and harry potters readers.
