Crafting in video games suck.

Crafting shall be about exploration (to find resources and blueprints) and about resources management (should i craft this now or wait to have enough to craft that).

Crafting in AC: NH was so, so bad. Hey, cool I've got wood and stone. I better run to the work bench to try out someting. Recipees? No, but let me try this combin- I can't?

I look on crafting as pointless in game padding and the whole obtuse process just bores the fuck out of me, so I tend to use to cheats, if available, that gives infinite XP, materials, money or whatever the fuck else you need to craft everything to their max levels, and be done with it, so I can get on with the actual game, TBH.

Played Steve in Smash Ultimate for the first time and I love his crafting! He's actually a lot of fun to play when you know what you're doing lol

Kinda, yeah. Line collect wood and then craft arrows in the middle of fight while rolling away from the enemy.

It is a bit stupid.

I don't mind crafting, but if its to be an interesting mechanic there needs to be animations tied to what you're crafting. Its really annoying seeing half baked crafting systems put into a game where all you're doing is clicking in a menu.

I love crafting in games, and love to have huge loot tables and I mostly buy only games with crafting in it, I guess is a matter of tastes, but it add dept in games and in an generation with games that are a swallow as a puddle if we remove crafting you are left with, well just "story driven wonnabe film" games.

Last of Us 2's system was really enjoyable. DQ11's was kind of fun.

Most crafting systems really suck though. Just add bloat and busywork to games.

It sucks in most games though some make it good.

I fucking hate crafting that's about farming materials and I also hate crafting that has so much stuff that the game expects you to spend 5 hours going to every location trying to figure out where you actually get the shit you need, which is so annoying you just end up looking at a Wiki (and that takes me out of the game).

But I'm playing DQ11 right now and I think that's a good example of fun crafting. It encourages exploring every area to get new materials and find new blueprints. But at the same time crafting requirements aren't they crazy so just exploring every area I've been able to instantly make like 90% of the blueprints I've found. And if you are missing something it can usually be found in the same general area as the blueprints and it's not too grindy to get.
Also the mingame, while simple, is rather fun.

Star Wars Galaxies.
Complex crafting with interdependant classes, quality of ressources mattered and every item could decay over time so crafting was always usefull.
As a weaponsmith, I had good connexions with other players who could gather rares ressources in dangerous locations, and I made among the best rifles of the server ! My small shop was located in the outskirts of Mos Eisley.

Then go play Kingdom Come: Deliverance?

That's a game that actually has you crafting a damn weapon from scratch and making you do the process of crafting (last I remembered).

And if you dont enjoy that, then, idk, what else do you want?

Crafting meals in Breath of the Wild was probably one of the best uses of the crafting mechanic I've seen in awhile

ACNH though...why can't I craft more than one of any single item at a time though?!?! I just want to make 20 bait bags at once!

Crafting is amazing.

4 strips of rawhide = Full body leather armor
2 strips of rawhide + 4 steel ingot = metal plate armor
2 strips of rawhide + troll guts + sorcerer's penis = black orc armor
2 dildos + leather harness + no shame = pride parade outfit

I love how close it is to reality

I'm not a big fan of it but I like the type found in the TLOU games which is pretty much collect shit and hit a button to make stuff and that's as far as I was crafting intruding into my gameplay, played a few MMOs back in the day and some of the crafting was on another level but not for me

Man they really did fuck over that game, I was too busy with Everquest and then WOW so never got around to the original Starwars mmo

I don't mind it in TLOU games because it fits in with the theme of makeshift weapons in a world where there are no shops but other than that it is not my favorite mechanic.

crafting in FF14 is pretty good. it even getting better. lot of QoL update being implemented too. recent ishgard firmament also speaks for itself

Crafting stations in Apex was a WTF moment for me.

I enjoy the crafting in Apex. It's flexible and well designed e.g.
  • Completely ignore it and just steal other player's loot after killing them
  • Search loot crates in place of materials/crafting
  • Focus on materials/crafting and subverting engagements with masses of squads to play for the winning engagements and end game skirmishes while progressing to a somewhat even playing field with your loot
  • Further craft your loot after a fight
  • Focused landing zones and random drops to bring squads together throughout the game
  • Use them as bait or ambush
  • There is no forced degrading of inventory or weapons
  • You are free to craft things for teammates or swap loot
  • Static core loot and rotating game meta changing loot e.g. always able to choose health or shields while being selective about the weapons you seek for what attachments to craft any given rotation day

Generally I'm super impressed with Respawn and how they implement their systems e.g. ping system, gameplay changes, crafting, map changes.

I hate systems such as Witcher III/Cyberpunk scavenging and endless menus/inventory or BotW degradation etc.

I have never EVER liked crafting in video games.
Fallout New Vegas crafting was ridiculous with each individual type gun ammo. the hell..

I think crafting in games is fine. I think it's still way better than crafting in mmos where one armor or weapon could take you days or weeks of unnecessary grinding to make.

Crafting is just an RPG lite system, it should be in and out as quickly as possible because its not the core gameplay

If you over develop it you end up like MGS3s tedious health management system. Which is cool in concept but takes away from.the main game

Crafting is well implemented in Monster Hunter World. It is the glue that holds the gameplay loop together. The whole purpose of slaying monsters is to carve them up for making your cool armor and weapons. Nothing much is given to you, you have to grow, craft or meld just about everything! Even so I never considered it burdensome because the combat is still king. Mastering your weapon and combos is the heart of the gameplay. Learning how to move in battle and stay alive. When I am having trouble I look forward to crafting better gear that will make monster slaying doable.

EDIT: Actually, I can think of one recent example of crafting in a game I enjoyed: Kingdom Come Deliverance. Manually operating the different parts of an alchemy table was really cool.

It was the first time but then it just took forever. Especially one of the later quests when you couldn't buy enough of a portion to complete as quest so you had to make it yourself. That took like 40mins
