Crazy Taxi coming to iOS

How do the turbo boosts work? You know, the gear shift trick to get bursts of speed

You tap the accelerate button once and then hold it the second time. Drifting is similar.

I should mention the frame rate is still pretty good on the iPhone 5, but it definitely runs a lot better on iPad.

That doesn't make any sense to me; I wonder why that's the case?

Interesting. Seems like it'd make the game a tad bit easier. Though I think the mechanic was kind of bs to begin with. I don't remember the game telling you how to do those tricks at all outside of a FAQ

Wait, why would the iPhone 5 perform worse than the 4S? Is that a common thing with iPhone 5 games?

i'm fitting to get one of them tomorrow

I can't properly drive in this game with a regular console, now with a smartphone...

Any videos of this thing running? I love crazy taxi to death but unless they dumbed it down I don't think it's going to work very well.

Flick of the Dead is already out on iOS in Japan. It's Typing of the Dead, just using the hiragana flick input. So HotD2 is essentially already on iOS. They just need to get the real deal working and they can have all my moneys.

Typing of the Dead on iPhone, but not on PSN (since PS3 supports it) and a Windows 7 patch/GoG release on PC/Windows.

I think if you watched the arcade games attract mode it might have told you how to boost. If it didn't, then there was definitely a sticker on the front of the cabinet with some simple instructions and tips.

I'm hoping that the real music being back means we're going to see an HD port of Crazy Taxi 1 / 2 /3. The smart bet would be Crazy Taxi 3 since it never got a fair shake on the OG Xbox and it requires all the classic music since it has a remake of CT1's Arcade City as well as CT2's Small Apple. If I could get HD Crazy Taxi 3 which fixed the framerate (and a terrible sound bug when picking up muti-people passengers) on the Las Vegas city, I'd be one happy gamer.

I'd be willing to re-buy CT1 if they re-ported it Jet Set Radio style, improving the framerate, fixing the pop-in and restoring the soundtrack. But I think that would be a tough sell to most people who already bought the game on PSN / XBLA. So a port of CT3 with the remake of the arcade city would be the next best thing.

Framerate is shit on my iPhone 4. The game is not too bad though besides that. It uses vibration to give you feedback on the controls

So this is getting the original soundtrack?

It was really a huge shame the XBLA/PSN port didn't have it. You won't believe how many first timers and even past players bought it and wondered why it seemed "different" without knowing. I pity the myriads of players who booted CT and didn't hear the iconic music as their first impression.

Seriously, a huge part of the charm of the Dreamcast CT was the The Offspring/Bad Religion soundtrack paired with the locations (KFC, FILA Store, Tower Records, etc). Just was a huge representation of the sunny coastal state (Cali) summers of 96-99. Perhaps it's their fault for not playing it back then though, as it's a representation of that era and in my opinion best played then for the first time. Nobody likes those negative nancies who say, "what's the big deal" when playing a gem 15 years late, now do we?

No chance of them patching the XBLA/PSN versions I doubt. What a crying shame, because that is there documented as "Crazy Taxi" forever, when it's gimped version.

It HAS the original soundtrack. It also supports custom soundtrack too. I don't mean playing your own music in the background. You can add your tracks to the game's playlist

Damn. This little iOS port is getting more work done to it than the HD console port. What a joke.
Custom soundtracks in the XBLA/PSN version was kind of crap because the songs would keep playing even in the main menu and character selects (which in the original had pretty iconic music and the transition into stage music was memorable too).

If the HD ports had customizable playlists including menu music toggles it would have been great, even if I would feel bad for the other 90% playing who are too lazy to put the proper tracks on and playing a gimped game. Then again, everyone has the iconic destinations missing.

But yeah, really a shame it was a quick and cheap port and what's on the digital marketplaces now and forever is a gimped version that many don't even understand why it doesn't seem as they remember. If some effort went in to making sure this is "Crazy Taxi" they would have at least got the rights back for the songs. Bad Religion and Offspring can't cost too much these days.

Actually, seems like the custom soundtrack thing just plays music in the background as if you have the music app activated. I guess it's not true custom soundtrack, but it supports having music in the background at least.

JEEZ, does this fucking franchise have to be playable on EVERYTHING? I mean, it's on ALL the 6th generation consoles, PC, OnLive, PSN, XBL...

.... oh wait, it's not on Android yet. *snicker*

I kid, I kid... the key word there is "yet", I'm sure Android will get the gaming equivalent of herpes soon enough.

So same as the XBLA/PSN port. Not that it matters though since the iOS port supposedly has the original soundtrack.

Knowing this and they seemingly got the rights back, they could go and patch the XBLA/PSN port. Could. But they won't.

Urg... 5 bucks? I still have the DC version as well as the sequel. If anything I want to play the third one again that's the one I put the least amount of time into. Too bad it's 1000 miles away and in storage (along with my original Xbox)

Wow. So the little touch only handheld iOS port is more definitive than the HD console port.

This is mainly because CT XBLA/PSN was released back in 2010 when SEGA was relatively new to releasing their heritage 3D games to digital platforms. They were lazy and didn't give a shit about the port quality. Like Sonic Adventure 1, a quick PC port (they even kept it in 4:3).

Nowadays they've stopped hiring cheap studios who don't really care about the original product (like Backbone) and putting some effort in, maybe because criticism has influenced them.

Now that they've gotten the rights back, the right thing to do is go back and patch the XBLA/PSN versions. But that won't happen.
So now the only hope is a Crazy Taxi HD Collection (of 1, 2 and 3) on the HD consoles, probably downloadable. Tons of people never played CT2 and CT3 (which have lost a lot of charm from the original and is just not as good in my opinion) and that'd be an incentive alone. But is SEGA smart enough to do this, even now with their digital-focused/heritage-focused output?

Framerate is kinda shit on iPhone 4 though. So yeah...I dunno.

There's two sections for screenshots in the preview, iPhone and iPad. Looks like the iPhone version is watered down in resolution and performance at the minimum. Colors are more vibrant and graphics sharper in iPad version too.

So this version we know has the original music opposed to the low effort HD console port. But what about original voice actors? That was for the most part missing from the HD ports too.

Such a shame what's on the XBLA/PSN marketplaces representing the name "Crazy Taxi" is a bastardized, tarnished nostalgia-ruining quick port missing original music, voices, destinations, performance, visual effects (since it's based on the PC/PSP?/PS2?/GCN? (predominantly PC port) port there is a different engine used from what I remember; for example the Dreamcast "shiny" graphic effect that was also missing in the SA DX port, which can be quickly seen comparing Sonic's character model between the DC ver. and PC/GCN/HD console ver).

I always felt (and probably said somewhere on GAF) that the Dreamcast Collection games they put out previously were done as cheaply as possible to test if there was a decent market out there for these games. Once it was established that there was a potential market, they could then decide how much to invest in each title going forward.

We're seeing the results of that now. Excellent ports of Dreamcast games like JSR and Sonic, amazing arcade ports for Virtua Fighter 5 and Daytona as well as the re-mixed Genesis/Megadrive collections for Streets of Rage and Golden Axe (which include the different region versions of each game). I really think Sega are delivering with this heritage label and as I said above, I'll buy Crazy Taxi again if it gets the treatment that Jet Set Radio did. Only missing one song (2 if you're European) was an incredible feat, in comparison, how hard can it be to talk to The Offspring and Bad Religion?

Not available on my country. DON'T THEY WANT MY MONEY?
It pisses me off so much when digital downloads are not available worldwide. It's plain stupid.

It's weird. It runs at a mosly solid 60 fps on my 3rd Gen iPad, but it only manages 30 fps on my iPhone 5.

It's clearly not retina on the iPad though.

That was the real trick of the game.

Anyone who was good at Crazy Taxi knew it was all about the Drive, Reverse, Drive.

For sure, that's my main question about the port, to know if you can actually play the game properly. Actually is there a lite version? I'll check it out.

Is it just me or does it actually control quite well?

I'm not a fan of iOS racers at all but this and Sonic & Sega Allstars both seem to control really well. Maybe it's a SEGA thing.

This is great, now bring out a proper port for the PS3 with the real music and force feedback steering wheel support. The half-baked PC port that is available on PS3 right now is so trash. I'm still pissed at myself for buying it.

I won't buy it for iOS until it's confirmed that the transmission boosting works properly. it's useless without it.
