Creepiest bosses in games that aren't survival horror.

They are just normal dragons but I always thought BG2 did their scale in a quite intimidating way. I remember shitting my pants the first time I walked into this:

hippa linda/stretch panic/freak out had a lot of odd/creepy looking boss fights. but Demonica seriously outcreeped everyone else!

If you've played Yoshi's Story then you know who this sick motherfucker is.

Every fucking time it popped up when I was a kid I shit myself.

Has like, every boss in Soul Sacrifice been mentioned yet? Designs aside, they also get far creepier when you read their backstories. Also the way their words come up in red text over the screen as you're killing them.

Edit: Some of my favourites:

EDIT: Woops...bosses, my mistake!

Demons / Dark Souls might not be traditional survival horrors like Resident Evil, but survivalism is still a massively important component of the game design, and art draws a lot from gothic horror. I'm not sure they're what the op is looking for.

Also, they stop being scary because you fight them so often (and die so often) they just kind of become animate attack patterns

Moreso than bosses in other games, in my experience.

Still. That initial rush when Gaping Dragon bursts out of that chasm is... yeeeeaaaaaarkkkkkkk.

Special Mention:

Even though it doesn't necessarily have a "boss" Heart of Darkness, how this game got an E rating I will never know, couldn't finish it though due to WAY too much trial and error gameplay.

Yeah, this. I only played that game's demo (I think it came as a gift in a Kellogg's cereal box) and it freaking terrified me as a kid.

Apart from that, the first thing that came to mind when I read the thread was Dragon Age Origin's broodmother, but it's already been mentioned.

Otherwise, I don't know if people count STALKER as a survival game (I wasn't aware it was one when I got it), but the bloodsucker and controllers are terrifying in this game. The first time you encounter either one (especially the controller, I completely freaked out "WTF IS HAPPENING, GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME") is really something.

Bongo Bongo from Zelda.

Creeped me out, I genuinely didn't like this boss, it was like a Penis with two hands, and then the cock head opens up into a flower.

I thought it was fucking weird and really out of place.

Take a look at that flower, close the petals, tell me it isn't a dick with hands.

They aren't really a boss, but you don't come across them often. When I do I'm usually like "I'm fucked." Malboro's are the devil.

Bad Breath is probably the attack I fear the most out of any JRPG. Now I'm sure there are ways to avoid all the status ailments, but as a kid I, sure as fuck didn't know how to avoid them. I think Ribbon's did the trick in one of the FF's

Since I don't class The Last of Us as survival horror, I'd say (spoilers)
the rapist/pedophile/cannibal/Nolan North, a.k.a. Dave. It's made more creepy since you combat him while playing as a kid, and he can fuck you up quite graphically. Pretty unprecedented in a video game
.

Definitely a character that came to mind for me when reading the thread title. The entire act is pretty unsettling.

Totally agreed. That game is more survival and horror than pretty much all games that call themselves survival horror these days. Everything is designed with this in my. Doesn't really fit the topic.

That said, the mud boss in Pikmin 3 is the stuff of nightmares.

edit:
Oh and Mavda from Pandora's Tower ...

and she's not even an enemy LOL

Haunts - Thief II (not really bosses, but creepy nonetheless)

Kangaxx - Baldur's Gate II, still have fear even thinking about battling that guy!

I thought that
Dave
from The Last Of Us was a fucking creep - if you've played the game you know which section I mean

yeah i was pretty shocked to discover he was voiced by nolan north. unlike some voice actors (ahem, steve blum) nolan north actually makes a real effort to sound different when the role calls for it, so maybe i should not have been so surprised.

Underwater bosses always scared the crap out of me when I was younger. Barbos in Donkey Kong Country 3 was pretty creepy. That red water, the way his spines almost look bloodstained, and just how unnatural he looks. Ugh.

Leechmonger from Demon's Souls:

The design of Griffon from Devil May Cry gives me the creeps, but in game he's incredibly easy to beat so the effect was lost on me after about 30 seconds.

Absolutely love her deisgn, as you can probably tell. So good. The fact that it took me a long time to figure out the 'bell' below her waist is her human form...is even better.

Emerald weapon from FF7

Fuck this Evangelion ass thing swimming around in the water. Scared me shitless when I played that game. It's super creepy hte way it just stalks around in the ocean.

Also while I was searching for an appropriate image, I finally found one that I like and the source was "Neogaf - scariest moments in non-scary games"

Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Dantes Inferno...I mean given the content, why wouldn't you consider these to be part of the horror genre? How are we distinguishing them from a game like Dead Space? They all are creepy.
