Crisis Core: FF7 was REALLY sad (obvious spoilerz)

Little LTTP but I just finished it and loved the game. I'm a diehard FF7 fanboy so this game was pretty much perfect in my eyes. Wow that ending was really emotional. Of course I knew it was going to happen through the whole game, but when the time actually came I couldn't help but feel emotionally drained by it in a way. Really deepened my love and understanding for the whole FF7 universe.

What's Gafs take on the game? I expect really mixed reactions.

Loved the story.

I prefer turn-based battles, but the battle system worked pretty well on PSP.

Production values were AAAA.

Missions were tedious, but appealed to JRPG grind-whores, and were suited well to a portable machine.

Change just one letter in your title and you'll have my opinion on the game.

I came here for obvious spoilerz and you give me nothing! You took away fourth minutes of my life and I want them baaaaaaaaaaack!

I found CC to be very entertaining, still have to finish my second playthrough and do all the missions (even if they're a bit repetitive I find then to be fun in short bursts). In fact, it was this game localized release that was the last drop for me to get a PSP Slim (along with Patapon and GoW:CoO, as it was to many others).

My main issue were unskippable cutscenes, something I find to be inexcusable in a game released so recently. I stopped playing the game on hard because it was just frustrating having to watch the big scenes all over again whenever I died. And Genesis got way more attention than it was necessary. Aside from those, not many issues from me.

More main characters like Zack in RPGs, thank you very much.

And I have to thank this game's graphical engine for some of the best annoucements to date this year.

Game was pretty boring; combat was bland.

The main story might have been alright on its own, but it was watered down with all those quests, each more tedious than the last.

saddest ending ever!
from the moment the reel starts to malfunction, to the last line that brings the game full circle
they managed it even though the ending is already known

the gameplay was only okay though, now that i think about it
not a game i'd go back
much rather replay FFT:WoL over and over again
but i would play the boss fight to watch the endings again

worst part of this game, is it makes the wait for remake almost unbearable, especially that epilogue movie =.=

The only thing I hated was Genesis and him quoting that shit 24/7. But I was so into the game that I forgave him and just kicked his ass that much harder.

I started to have an :( face the whole time when you were carrying Cloud until the ending, you just know what's going to happen which made it that much worse. The ending *almost* brought me to tears, but I could hold it in. Truly a masterpiece for the PSP.

Oh yeah, can't forget the music. The themes got stuck in my head for a long time and I hummed it alot too

Loved it. Best game ending I've ever seen. I cried.

Final Fantasy could use more characters like Zack.

"That girl said the sky frightened her...
That looks so liberating..."

^I got goosebumps

The only thing I really have a problem with is after you break out from Hojos tubes and you have to go clear areas ahead. It just seemed liked tacked on gameplay just to boost the playtime.

Do want Remake RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

I didn't care for the story, at all.

I loved the gameplay though. Just detached enough so that I could play the game while in a near comatose level of consciousness and just challenging enough so that I couldn't fall asleep while playing it. Perfect game for late late night playing.

Loved the ending, but hated how barren Midgar was in the CC. Was totally lifeless, and it didn't feel like the Midgar in the first game at all.

The parts with Gongaga and Banora too. Felt like those were forced in because it's a game and must have a final dungeon/boss. That beach segment was a good addition though.

That's the main reason why i don't want a remake on PSP. It's just so dull. After the initial excitement of walking in Loveless Avenue, it became rather boring. Needs more bloom/sparks :X

Here's a letter for this game: X.

I'm five hours into it, does the combat get any more complex than run around and press x until shit dies?

if u get tired of combat just hug the walls (stay close to the walls) to avoid battles.

but its just mashing the x and dodging that's about it

It all involves pressing X. Doesn't really get terribly deep but the Materia Fusion is fun plus enemies get different strengths/weaknesses depending on the element(fire/thunder etc.) of the attack. So I guess it get semi-deep.

great game, and really well done ending, one of the best in years

but I never tried to lvl up, but I ended up cruising through the game like I was 20 lvls higher then I was supposed to be

Amazing game. Love the mini missions too, repetitive but fun.
Yeah when I play them it's like I know I'm doing the same shit over and over again but it remains fun. I like when they have tiny stories with them like the Yuffie ones.

The battle system is really really fun actually.

Levels are important, but at the same time there's timing and lots of skill involved.

I hope that Versus XIII takes that system and makes it even better.

One of the most soulless and unfun action RPGs I've ever played.
Actually, probably the worst ARPG I've ever sat down and suffered through.

What's funny is that THIS was the game that finally got me to fully complete a FFVII playthrough. I had attempted, many times over the past 10+ years, to "get" FFVII. But only in my most recent attempt (about a month before CC hit), did I finally manage to play through the entire game, to completion. On my PSP, no less.

I appreciated all of the nostalgic elements to Crisis Core, but as a pure game, it was absolutely awful. I could have tolerated the shallow and broken combat system. But the horrific, horrific dungeon and quest design destroyed the game for me. Absolutely destroyed it. I've never seen such poor and ineffectual design in a "AAA" game before. It's like they never even tried to design interesting quests or dungeons. The entire game was trudging through increasingly larger segments of the same 10 or so locations, fighting increasing more powerful versions of the same handful of enemies, and pursuing unending iterations of the same few, basic quest types.

It was all so pointless and futile. I basically found absolutely nothing to redeem the game except for the occasional great song.

I kind of wish I could bring myself to finish it. Maybe I'll go and Youtube the ending or something. Save myself the time and effort.

IAWTP

At first i was like this was fun but then it quickly fell apart into one of the most repetitive trash i have ever played.

Also agreeing. I elaborated in detail on the mission structure here:

I also like how the Missions - the most handheld-friendly aspect of the game - basically amounted to a set of repetitive corridors set in a few basic areas ending with a slightly more difficult than usual enemy. All of them were EXACTLY the same, with no variation whatsoever.

I remember one mission was like "GO TO FORT CONDOR AND INVESTIGATE" and I was all "HOLY SHIT FORT CONDOR", but actually it was just fucking wandering around the same goddamn desert again.

The counter argument I've read was that building a few big maps where you can alternate paths to create unique scenarios is a good way of getting variety out of a relatively small punch, but what it really means is that you're a lazy fucking development team who has decided to put next to no effort into your level design. More criticisms here.

Was this game sad? I think it's pretty clear that my disconnection from the subject matter was far too great to elicit a response of that magnitude. The writing was so fucking terrible that any possible feeling I could garner was eliminated by fits of non-stop laughter. It was a comedy, not a tragedy. Wait, I take that back... it was also a tragedy.

Amir0x said:
As fanservice, it was corrupted by "new Nomura taint", inserting things which clearly don't mesh with the rest of the FFVII universe into the story of Zack and piecing apart any nostalgia I can personally gain from it. The writing is just straight up atrocious at times, I nearly cried tears of pure crystallized laughter with the whole "WHAT DO ANGELS DREAM!?" bullshit. The non-stop quoting of Loveless, the bizarrely unfocused narrative regarding Hojo and Hollander. Genesis doesn't even need explanation, that was a mess start-to-finish.

If the gameplay were any good it would overcome the gradeschool anime-cum-videogame fanfiction, but of course it was not.

That's my position. I guess I don't need to evangelize on the subject as it's been done over and over, but this is one of those games that inspires fury.

I pretty much agree with that. Starts great then breaks down. Maybe even moved "too fast" since nothing felt developed.

The ending was nice and all but also not very sad.

I beat the JP version and shed man tears.

I watched the English version of the ending and cried for a different reason.

SE's localization absolutely fails hardcore. They seriously need to take a page from Konami or even Capcom's book. Neither of them are "great" either, but SE does a worse job localizing than shounen anime on Cartoon Network.

The story was great (except for Gackt).

The gameplay was shit (except for fighting with an umbrella).

Average game. Three out of five. A lot better than Kingdom Hearts II, but that's a story for another LTTP.

DILLY DALLY SHILLY SHALLY !!

Since I am still playing the game I won't everything that has been posted.

I like the battle system. It's very simple but is more fun than most ATB. Boss fights aren't as good but the common encounters are much more bearable. The encounter rate is much too high on some missions though. I would like if XIII was a hybrid of XII and CC's battle systems because having useful movement in combat and click to attack adds a lot. If not I hope that VS ends up playing like CC.

Good things
-Lots of command materia early on. It suits the action rpg nature
-Pick up and play nature

Bad things
-Fusion seems useless
-Random(?) materia leveling
-only one weapon skin and attack pattern
-maybe too many easy missions
-Even though Zack is the original character in the storyline and Cloud is the copycat to the player i think it's the opposite.
-I would have liked the characters following Zack in the storyline to show up in battles needing protection or doing minor damage.

I do think the game is good. It happens to be easier to come up with negatives than positives though.

Crisis Core is awesome, Tabata is a great director, Nomura is a great creative producer, etc etc. Can't wait for The 3rd Birthday and FF AgitoXIII. :D

This. The only thing that kept me going was that Zack was actually a really good character. The ending was an excellent payoff for an otherwise lackluster game.

The reels part was great, I have yet to find a english video of that part and it pisses me off.

Also "Price of Freedom" is one of the best songs in recent FF history.
