Criticially Acclaimed Games That Are Actually Awful

Just how many of these "name a game you don't like that other people love?". Hyped games you think are awful, beloved NeoGAF community loved games you think are awful, some magazine gave it good scores and you think it's awful, etc?

Just to take part, Altered Beast. Sure it was amazing to see an arcade experience move so gracefully to a home console at the time, but it's still a shallow beat-em-up even then. Being an early title for a console without much competition gave it a lot of acclaim.

This thread seems like it'll be based solely on opinion, but whatever.

There really isn't any other way to go with these types of threads. Sure we could talk about technical aspects, poor programming or A.I. paths, story, music, or anything else to that affect impartially, but that's not what was asked in the original post nor given an example of.

Something to that affect would be nice though. A "the technical flaws in critically acclaimed games" could have some good discussion and information. If nothing else, some amusing videos showing some of the awful A.I. and detection responses in Metal Gear Solid 3.

So this is basically list all the best games and then say they are complete crap thread?

Don't we have like 50-100 thousand of these?

Atmosphere? Second to none.

Gameplay? Absolutely boring.

Resistance 2 has a meta score in the high 80's.

Highest rated game in the serise.

I have yet to talk to anyone who liked R2 let alone someone who thinks its the best in the series.

I've stated many times in Resistance threads that it's my favorite in the series. But I acknowledge that the game has problems.

I can't think of a single critically-acclaimed game I could actually call "awful." That's a tall order. It's nigh impossible for that many people to be totally wrong.

I can think of plenty of critically-acclaimed games I dislike/hate, but that's different.

Assassins creed one is a pos. It Is the definition of all flash and no substance. Everything is scripted. And it is a collectAthon. The underlying mechanics are nice And the game is pretty. But the actual game sucks.

This was the first AAA Title. Where it was obvious the media bought into the hype. A few web sites really called it like it is. The rest I don't know what they were thinking.

Did not play 2.

I played 2 and it was good. Totally agree with you, I was so disappointed with 1 I didn't even want to play any new games for a few months.

The most critically acclaimed game of all time.

There is so much crummy filler in this game that I didn't realize until just recently. It lacks flow, and, outside of the dungeons, decent level design. The time travel mechanic is also incredibly weak from a gameplay perspective, paling in comparison to the Light/Dark world mechanic of its predecessor. And of course, the worst part about this game is the reintroduction of older elements when entering ganondorf's castle, which would eventually be included and expanded upon in all future console Zelda's in what I can only look at as a mark of laziness.

Of course, the story gets points for being short and sweet. And the cutscenes are approached with a level of minimalism that I absolutely admire. But lock-on, a special shield button, and rolling all need to go.

Shadow of the Colossus
Before quoting me: Not an awful game, but there was (and is) so much praise and hype around the game "been art", that many put the horrible framerate, blurry visuals, low res textures, empty fields, bad combat... because "it was the intention and the vision". Every other game that does that is slammed for horrible visuals, choppy framerate and empty maps with nothing to do. "But is because the colossi are like a stage on its own!"..."but...but.. the horse!! I cried!!!". And this is coming from someone that actually like ICO...before while the game was bombing in sales and it was cool to enjoy it...maybe that's why.

:p

But in general I agree that as noted, is more about opinions.
Usually, actual awful games don't receive critical acclaim. The most is usually hyped games that get high scores because of hype and with time the reviewers admit to it and would've given lower scores (like IGN's Jade Empire 9.9); but that the game was still good.

I'm struggling to think of a game that received amazing scores but was later generally acknowledge as being bad. Time to peruse old game reviews.

Ooooh! *raises hand* Castlevania 64.

Which is actually a good game. But at some point, everyone decided that it sucked after saying it was good.

This thread is new and exciting. Never seen it before.

My answer is that popular game you loved. You know the one. You got so hyped, but it was factually awful. You should feel bad for liking it.

Time to reexperience all those enemies all those enemies and locales megaman style!

At last I found another dissident voice! Bro fist!

No nononono

Most Mario Karts aren't that great, and I say that because I still have more fun with Crash Team Racing.

I don't know how Sonic 4: Episode I and Sonic Unleashed on the Wii managaed to garner such positive reviews, they both kinda sucked. Not flat-out terrible, but both horribly meh.

GTA4 was boring as shit.

Fuck New Super Mario Bros. Wii and DS.

God of War.

I simply do not enjoy these games. It's like they put a 13 year old kid in charge of a development studio.
This for the exact same reason.
All Valve games aside from Portal franchise which is incredible...

...oh how could i forget that massive piece of shit that is the CoD franchise and all his clones.
