Cronos: The New Dawn |OT| Survive The Future. Salvage The Past.

This is why survival horror is a dead genre. Kinda sad, because i really like it.
It's not dead, we are getting new Silent Hill and new RE….we have good amount of survival horror.

People just need to understand just like horror movies, horror games are not meant to have mass appeal, not everybody likes to getting scared.

I just hope it will be a financial success for them on the long run

I think it will as long as they don't expect COD or Nintendo level sales.

This game is new IP and top of it survival horror….it just will not gonna have mass appeal but that doesn't mean survival horror is dead genre…..that's like saying SRPGs are dead genre because don't sale high numbers.

Edit: Also don't forget in NA the physical copy doesn't come until Sep 19th.

It just had to launch in October as a Halloween game. I do not understand why not? October is ninja gaiden and it will dominate lol.

Unfortunately survival horror fans are used to getting a good game and then studios go under.

Such is our calling.

I doubt, therefore I am, am I not?

The warden dropping some of the hardest lines in gaming ever. My miiiiiiind!!!

Estimated budget of the game was $27 million and Bloober confirmed the actual figure was well below that. It's not failing.

There's zero chance this peaks at 4k on Steam over the weekend.

I'm playing on Xbox though so not my problem.

I hit a major bug after the choice at the end of the Steelworks. The Traveler says she's going back to the Terminal. The first two times, the level loaded in for a split second, and then disappeared, leaving only a blank expanse. Taking a few steps, I fell through the level and died.

The nearest autosave was unfortunately right BEFORE the end Steelworks boss fight. On the third attempt, I dropped all graphics settings to LOW and let the Steelworks end choice play out instead of picking the option I wanted. The bug didn't happen, but I'm kind of miffed because now I didn't get to make the choice to get the passive ability I wanted.

Very strange bug, I didn't have any game breaking issues during my playthrough. Don't think you can do anything about it, because you can't force the game to autosave.

Maybe try to wait a bit after the next attempt, so that the game will have more time to load the map and the textures.

Thanks. The game autosaved right after the time I didn't get the bug, and my nearest manual save was 30 minutes further back. If you recall that part of the game, there's a long stretch without a save room.

It stinks, but I'm moving on!

indeed, I think this will have a long tail once people get paid again and finish hollow knight etc
It's a wild year.

It actually does have silent hill f to worry about more than anything imo. If someone is looking to pick up one scare game this Halloween and SHf is the better game than it'll be only the hardcore genre heads to pick this up.

Just fought another boss. Came out with literally 1 bullet to my name. Cheeks tight the whole time.

Killed the first boss and finished the first dive, I don't want to sound elitist but as I suspected the reviewers who shat on the combat are just scrubs who can't git gud.
As long as you manage your resources well, choose what to craft carefully and use only well aimed, charged shots it's quite simple and rewarding.
My bet is that in their panic they did not charge their shots, blasted away all their ammunition and then got angry because the game doesn't provide the player all the resources in the world.

Poor Bloober got fucked hard by those few very low reviews that bring the overall score down a lot...
But they're not in the clear as well, the frame graph is a mess, the stutters with Hardware RT ON are ridiculous, after Silent Hill 2 they should've learned...

It doesn't matter the score, original Evil Within has 75 metic score but that didn't stop me from loving the game.

100%

You could tell that salty bitch that gave it a harsh review because the combat was too hard was just getting his cheeks clapped over and over for trying to play the game like resident evil 4 or something. You have to be resourceful and methodical, every bullet counts as you can find yourself going for long periods of time with no ammo.

Finished the 2nd dive and onto the next area. SH2 not withstanding this Is bloopers best work by far. Such a huge improvement. Shame midsong is getting all the attention over this and Hell is Us

It's really not THAT hard. But I get it. Asking for a just a tad bit of critical thinking in a shooter is a bit much to ask.

Just passing to say i'm officially in, not messed around with anything yet, i'm charging my controller then play some. I'm already hyped by the initial vibe and soundtrack.

& if silent hill f has difficulty settings, that'll be a lock...

It's irrelevant anyway, now if under performs on console..... that's a problem.

Just completed it.

Holy shit do we need a spoiler free discussion thread.

Master fucking piece. 9.5/10. Best horror game I've played other than evil within 1.

Bloobers magnum opus.

All it really needed was more enemy variety overall, but the bosses were so damn good.

Only 2 hrs in, but great game so far.

Positives:
- Amazing atmosphere and art style.
- Really like the retro synth music.

Not negatives, but more like nitpicks:
- Hope the level design gets more intricate, so far it's pretty basic.
- Auto flashlight.
- Movement a bit too tanky, I get why, but still.

So far it reminds of Dead Space the most, just with a different coat of paint and a bit of Returnal.

I wanted to get this but the performance i heard was awful. Is it really that bad on PC?

Look up video from Alex on DF

Performance is ok, only some traversal stutters here and there.

Holy shit, I played few hours of this game and it's great. Amazing atmosphere and music. Combat is high tension and it's much easier to die than in most games but this is not souls level of difficulty for sure. My new monochromatic color theme for afterburner fits it well, lol.

Love it.

Just dropping in to note a few mods/tweaks that can significantly improve the experience

  • No Intro: Just your usual intro-skipping mod. Speeds up game booting.
  • Mouse sensitivity fix: The game has horrific mouse controls. This makes it feel like a traditional third-person action game.
  • Ultra Plus: The Ultra+ series of mods are the only ones for UE games that aren't just generic copy/pasted INI files full of placebo and bullshit. They actually make under-the-hood changes while providing options above-and-beyond what's available in the game. They added ray reconstruction, added toggles for vignette/DOF/film grain, and made it easy to change the FOV.
  • Black floor fix: Yet again, RenoDX proves to be an essential tool for many HDR games on PC. While U+ has their own fix, the authors recommend using this mod instead as it provides better results.

Those with 8GB VRAM, kinda avoid this as UE5 stutters considerably. While it plays alright (1080P, 60FPS) on medium with DLSS Q, the experience is a bit jank because of the random stutters. I recommend getting this if you have at least 12GB VRAM imo, action-horror needs smooth and stable framerates.

Fucking work man -.-

Only played for an hour, gonna continue tomorrow after work. So far im really liking the atmosphere, sound design is great and i like the main characters VA aswell

DF says that lowering textures to low is the key for 8GB GPUs. Textures are still the same, just memory pool they use it lower.

I don't know how that woks in the long run, for me (with max out texture pool) game starts to reserve ~13GB (and use over 10GB) after more than 1h of play.

I'm an hour in and having a blast so far.

The mood is immaculate, sound design slaps, it's challenging without feeling unfair.
Switch 2 version holds up well enough; it's clearly trimmed back, but not in a way that spoils the experience.

Got the bolt cutters and about to go to the elevator. Man, the game sure takes some very obvious inspirations but at the same time it feels unique. It has this very rough, crude bare metal feel, aesthetic and design when it comes to sci-fi elements. It reminds me of Half-Life 2 and Combine tech, meaning that it's not overly designed and too complex in terms of various machinery, terminals and stuff, rather simple enough, almost unpolished, like everything was just made at the steel factory, assembled and shipped as is. Dead Space has something similar, but tech there is more complex and overall aesthetics are way more advanced, plus weapons and such are engineering tools, but in Cronois it's some kind of shifting tech that almost has a 3D printed feel to it like in Callisto, except you don't have to switch parts on one frame to make anything. More urban environments (at least at the beginning, who knows what's else the game has) instead of space stations and space ships, help ground the whole experience. I hope they'll explain this anomaly manipulation thing you get to create bridges etc. cuz so far it feels out of place, unlike stasis and kinetic module from Dead Space which make sence.

Combat is brutal, as well as resource management. I died a few times when you fall to the pit with lots of explosives later on and even with an upgraded shotgun it's anything but easy. Like, some may say that Dead Space also had enemies that could mutate into various things by using corpses, well yes, but here it's completely different, way more frequent and much more dangerous to encourage you think strategically, when to burn corpses etc. and no, stomping them won't help at all unlike in Dead Space. It's basically a much more aggressive and dangerous combination of RE and Dead Space when it comes to corpses, enemies and again, unlike in Dead Space when there's only one mutation, here it's multiple mutations each of which is way stronger than the other and you really don't want for it happen ever cuz otherwise you're fucked. So no, it's not a copy & pace of Dead Space and RE and Bloober actually did something unique here and made it their own and this is the way it must be done, while not being afraid to borrow ideas from other games.

Anyway, really great proper first impressions so far, will play more later:messenger_relieved:

wow the story here is so good. I think I might have figured things out at my 2nd dive, knowing it takes inspiration from Dark, but even if I did, I can't wait to see where its going.

Just greenlit an all-nighter with my lady, let's go!!!

1080p DLAA vs DLSS Quality, maybe it's just me, but I don't see a big enough difference to justify switching to DLAA. Keep in mind that DLSS Quality at 1080p is actually rendering at 720p, yet the image still holds up even in motion. The transformer model is just bonkers.

DLSS4 is just insane. DLAA not even worth it at 1440p because quality still looks insanely crisp and detailed and even the balanced mode looks crisp

I bet Konami saw early build of Cronos before they handed the SH2R to Bloober, cuz I sure as fuck would in a heartbeat without even thinking once after what I just saw and experienced. Absolutely in-fuckin'-credible original idea, the world, storytelling, lore, atmosphere, mood, attention to detail and pitch perfect excecution all around. I just love the way they're telling the story in Cronos through greatly directed cut-scenes with superb camera work, great voice acting of everyone involved and amazing way to set up and kickstart everything at the beginning. Like, time travel stories are already done to death but just like Remedy with Quantum Break and Housmarque with it's time loop in Returnal, Bloober found a way to make it unique and interesting right from the start, but when you get to certain point in the game when they start showing you things, then you slowly try to piece everything together and... then it hits you like a train.

First Clair Obscure this year from a completely unknown studio and now Cronos. WTF, Bloober? Holy shit. Like, I knew this game will be something special first time I've seen it, but holy fuck what an amazing surprise which turns out to be even better than I was expecting after SH2R. THIS! This is what Callisto should've been like in terms of realization and execution, Glen, why the fuck have you not made it so and ruined another original IP, idea and universe like that? Dang. Ugh, well, at least Bloober didn't so GIANT kudos to them! Watch and learn, I guess.
