I've found one that's even worse. Watch this video and skip to around 4m 15s:

135lb.

If Crossfit is all about functional strength training (lol), then what the hell...

...is this?

That kipping pullup is puzzling as it seems 50% is the momentum of swinging back and forth. Just slowly control your movements up and down and you'll have a more intense workout as you'll be maximising the load on your muscles.

Doesn't swinging around like that defeat the purpose of doing pullups in the first place? It's like swinging the weights to make curls easier.

Yes and as a bonus it can fuck up your rotator cuff.

I imagine it's for movement and momentum training for the uneven bars not this.

I looked it up a bit on the web and the kipping done in gymnastic is different. Crossfitters exaggerate the hell out of it and use their momentum to lift themselves up.

One of the comments in this video states that gymnasts use it to progress to ring work. I think that's true.

This one has to be the worst out of all of them. Bar none.

Really? I don't see why, as long as she's not hitting full range of motion.

I'm all for shitting on silly Crossfitters, but this particular exercise looks plenty safe. You don't seriously think she's banging her kid's face on the bar with every rep, do you?

It doesn't look plenty safe to me at all. Strapping your child to yourself while you do exercises at the gym is the complete opposite of safe to me.

Doing clean and jerks, squats, or walking lunges while wearing a baby? Definitely unsafe.

But smooth, controlled pullups from a bar that you can grab from standing? Pretty much the safest, most stable exercise there is. Just don't kip.

Or to avoid accidents like falling on her kid or bumping his head, the child could just be not strapped to her at all.

Best part of crossfit is the gigantic light weight plates.

It's GREAT marketing because it makes it look like those people are picking up 300+ lbs when it's probably like 100.
They're bumper plates. They're that way so that you can drop the bar after doing OH squats, cleans etc without ruining the plates.

All of these crossfit memes are the vast vast VAST minority. I don't do crossfit anymore, but when I did I visited several boxes and never did I see anything like any of that. What you do see though is a lot of bad form on amateurs in tough WODs when they're fatigued. I think that's the biggest drawback to xfit. But the experienced members don't struggle with form even when fatigued.

Yah, that has nothing to do with "crossfit." Those are "bumper" plates for olympic lifts. They have more bounce so you can safely drop them. Most olympic lifters use them as well. Nothing to do with "marketing."

As far as the kipping critique - anyone who thinks kipping pullups and strict pullups are the same is insane. However, most crossfitters I knew didn't think they were the same thing. Kipping pullups were seen as more of a gymnastics/cardio move and strict was seen as a strength move. Similar (not exactly) to burpees vs. pushups.

Is there any actual set routine that defines crossfit? I did it once and it seemed to be exactly what my high school football coach made us do 15 years ago.

The big part of CF is that it changes daily. Which, in and of itself, is fine. If you're doing proper work outs with good form. Which seems to generally not be the case.

No. And that is actually one of the problems. Crossfit is so nebulous the programming can be really good or absolutely stupid. There are certain core exercises that are frequented, but that's about it.

The painted plates made to look like 45s is hilarious. Its almost like those cartoons with the balloon 1ton weights

Bumper/olympic plates are great since they allow you to do compound lifts without affecting your form (think of deadlifts, pendlay rows, power clean, etc). They are expensive as fuck though.

I don't think anybody has an issue with the use of bumper plates, it's just hilarious that CrossFit paints them all black so they look like 45's.

I came for the CrossFit GIFs. I was not disappointed.

My gym's bumper plates are all black. It has no affiliation with CrossFit.

No, that's generally the case. Its just the people that don't like it are very vocal about not liking it, just like anything else.

Mine are all black. People actually care about what color they are?

I've never even read up on CrossFit up until now. The whole time-aspect seems a bit fishy but the exercises themselves (well, some of them atleast) seem like really good training. Combined with regular gym, cardio, swimming and sports it seems like a great workout.

The issue with Crossfit is that these are all movements that existed before it was even a twinkle in Glassman's eye. They're all good or even great exercises, it's just that Crossfit seems to have a way of finding the most inappropriate uses and most ineffective programming for them.

The basic idea behind Crossfit is basically "train a little bit of everything". It's a fine idea but it's nothing groundbreaking. Lots of Crossfit gyms take this idea and use it very well. Unfortunately more often than not the stuff that comes out of the HQ is a classic example of "good idea, terrible execution."

I'm just saying that maybe people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. If you are going to constantly shit on the form of a big group of fitness enthusiasts, I'd like to see your form as well.

The point is that the trainers shouldn't be allowing this to take place. If someone in this thread runs a gym and allows their clients to use form similar to the gifs, then by all means call them a hypocrite.

Hell, I don't need any other form to compare to say that this kind of exercise is terrible for your body.
