CrowbCat: Dead Rising 10 years old details vs Dead Rising 4

As someone who never played those games, i'm very impressed with all the little details in DR1. And pretty embarrassed about DR4, i would never guess it's a newer game on a much more powerful system.

DR1 feels like a real 'zombies outbreak happens and you're in the mall' simulator

DR4 feels like a third-person shooter with a mall as setting and zombies as enemies

Neither feel like a true to life zombie sim. A true zombie game would kill your ass with one bight and turn you into a zombie.

Like I said, it's a legal thing.

Weird decision but it is what it is. The rest of the video after that first minute is more damming in terms of weird omissions.

it makes zero sense. The ragdoll can be a single, region based flag.
if (country == GERMANY)
enable_ragdolls = false

There. Solved it. Pls pay me Capcom.

Nothing is funny about the outcome of Dead Rising 4.

Breaking the windows with the cleaner got a chuckle out of me though.

(Wasn't interested in checking out DR4, now super not interested in checking out DR4. Might re-install the 1 or 2 though.)

Holy crap, when he picked up the glass cleaner and it made the glass break. It really showed how the items aren't unique at all anymore.

Dead rising was about an environment that reacted in unique ways to the things in it. That is lost now.

Great video as always.

Man, Dead Rising 1 was such a gem. Though all of the attention to detail makes me wonder what it would have been like if that team had created Shadow of Rome 2 instead.

Could be that the new Dead Rising lacks in interactivity and in physics simulation because of the weak CPU on the new consoles?

Yeah theres far more to complain about than just the lack of a timer. I played the game for a few hours and just couldn't keep going. I can see how people might enjoy whats there in a braindead way but all the regressions were just too much for me. I had low expectations going in and the game didn't even meet them. DR3 was tolerable but this was just too much.

The new consoles don't seem to have a problem with all that stuff in the remasters.

I rather think of it as the industry going backwards.

Dishonored 2

Hitman (6)

Titanfall 2

Etc.

The industry went backwards, but then it got out of that anti-good level design, anti-interactivity, anti-player responsibility, faux choice self-serious nightmare world that the decision makers of DR4 thought they were still in.

I had no idea DR4 turned out like this. As a fan of the original I had intended to pick this up cheap one day. Totally lost interest now. The reduced gore doesn't bother me but being able to pick anything up and use it as a weapon was the biggest selling point of the game!

This video makes it look like DR1 was made by a bunch of devs going OH MAN WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF WE COULD DO THIS? WAIT SHOULD WE LET THE PLAYERS DO THIS? WELL WHY SHOULDN'T WE BE ABLE TO HIT THE ENEMIES WITH PIE? YEAH LET'S MAKE ALL THE STUFF IN THE STORE USABLE!

DR4 on the other hand looks like it was made by a bunch of devs who had heard of the original, played through it while developing DR4 and used it as a basic blueprint. I'm sure they worked really hard, I'm sure some of them were even really passionate about what they were doing, but clearly the original dev team behind DR1 had an entire different vision and a larger sense of all the possibilities the new consoles could give them at the time while the DR4 devs were probably just focused on making a game recognizable as dead rising.

Also MT Framework is one hell of an engine.

I was gonna buy DR4 on the cheap eventually, but after seeing this, yea it keeps getting worse looking. They kinda killed the whole point of the sandbox gameplay.

It feels like every time a game come out that is refreshing and fun developed by a Japanese developer becomes more bastardized as Western developers take over.

Dead Rising is the latest example but Silent Hill was one as well. You could argue Resident Evil followed the same path with the developers looking at the Western market appetite for MOAR ACTION BRAH!!!

Now it looks like RE is going back to its roots while DR will probably get another sequel similar to DR4 simply because it might sell well. Silent Hill has been a disaster since just after Homecoming and Konami dropping it like it hot because of Kojima.

I shudder if Dark Souls were ever to be made by a Western developer.

The more I see of DR4 the more I don't want to play it. I went from: Day 1, to "eh maybe at a discount" to, "eh maybe at 10 bucks" to "never mind I'll just keep the DR legacy alive in my mind by not playing it at all". It looks so bad.

I got it for twenty, sold it for thirty a week later. At least I got a zombie hand holding mistletoe out of it.

It's the type of attitude a number of teams seemed to have during the early/mid 00s period. Adding little things in there because they could and they knew it would make the game just that bit more interesting, even it wasn't something everyone would notice.

Oh wow Shadow of Rome. Hadn't thought about the similarities before.

Some of this DR1 stuff is seriously impressive

It really was ahead of its time in so many aspects. In my opinion, it was the first game of that gen that announced what were the possibilities of new hardware that couldn't be done on the previous gen. Whether it was the sheer level of interactivity, the amount of zombies on the screen or the level of detail present, the only thing more impressive was how well it integrated all of those elements into a cohesive whole. The game is a cruel mistress, but like any good dominatrix, you'll realize that all you can do is submit to its whims and then you'll start to realize how good it really is.

All everyone needs to know is Capcom made DR1 themselves in Japan, then gave it to western studio Blue Castle Games (now known as Capcom Vancouver).

I'm starting to feel a little bad for DR4 devs since it's apparently not a bad game, but the shortcomings compared to the first one are undeniable.
