EXCLUSIVE: With a $61 million opening weekend overseas on Universal Pictures’ Oblivion, who could blame Tom Cruise for wanting to stay in science fiction mode? He’s just made a deal to become attached to star in Yukikaze, a big-scale film based on a series of Japanese sci-fi novels by Chohel Kamayashi. Warner Bros acquired the novel series and will finance and distribute. The author has been called Japan’s answer to Isaac Asimov, and the film will be produced by 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally, who developed and produced the sci-fi film All You Need Is Kill that Cruise starred in for Warner Bros and director Doug Liman. Viz Media’s Jason Hoffs will also be producing.

Yukikaze unfolds in the early 21st Century, three decades after the alien force JAM invaded earth through a dimensional porthole that appeared over Antarctica. While humans beat back the attack, they form a special combat force to eradicate the alien threat on its home planet.

Between this and "All you need is Kill" its clear the Cruise Missile's next target is the Japanese light novel industry.

"My Sister can't possibly be this cute" to be the next Cruise movie!

Holy fucking shit, LIVE ACTION YUKIKAZE? The anime is awesome (well, the animation and designs are awesome).

I actually just watched this anime a few months ago. Only like 6 episodes. Maybe 12. I didn't really care for it. But Tom Cruise is cool, so we'll see?

That whack looking oblivion film made 61 mil weekend?....the world hates me. Tom cruise filmography stays winning....at making money and failing to be interesting any longer

Meanwhile Joe Kosinski proves himself to be the least interesting thing in movies ever.

Only thing blander than that guys movies is the Hunger Games

Christ his career has gone in the shitter in the past 5 years. This is now like the 5th or 6th consecutive role than he wouldn't even give the time of day back in his prime.

RIP, Cruise Missile.

Yeah it's hilarious that this guy has a third chance at making crap now that this is successful

I dig his movies, but he needs to shift back into 'motherfucking baller' mode and team up with Michael Mann again for something awesome.

Or do a David Fincher crime film.

The premise reminds me of Strange Journey... Just with aliens instead of demons. Might watch if it ends up being decent.

Just looking at Cruise's filmography, and he really did kill his career with his 2005 Katie Holmes/Xenu insanity. His last two films prior to that were War of the Worlds and Collateral. He was working with the top directors in the game.

Some of his stuff since then: Knight And Day, Rock of Ages, Jack Reacher, Oblivion, All You Need Is Kill. And the highest profile director of any of those films is James Mangold.

The Japanese answer to this?

I haven't seen Oblivion and All You Need Is Kill, but to be fair, he's really good in all those movies. Ghotocol with Brad Bird was really good.

He should try a few smaller-scale projects and personal projects in the future. Maybe he just wants to do as many blockbusters as possible before the Scientologists take him out.
