New, easier control schemes to get players up and moving aren't the only method being deployed by game makers to expand the scope of their creations. Other themes at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video game industry's largest showcase, include 3-D games and increased integration of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

On display this week:

•Games with depth.Sony has announced that PS3s received a software update for playing 3-D games, and the company has several downloadable games available on the PlayStation Network. SOCOM 4 is due later this year, and Killzone 3 is expected next year, both being developed with 3-D features.

The futuristic shooter action game Crysis 2 promises to be the first major game available in 3-D on the three major high-def game platforms when it is released later this year for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PCs. "The success of 3-D movies like Avatar and the introduction of 3-D TVs from the hardware manufacturers tells us that this is the next big movement in entertainment, much like HD was years ago," says Cevat Yerli, CEO of Frankfurt-based Crytek.

Both versions of the game (2-D and 3-D) will have the same content.

Even the game's multiplayer mode will be playable in 3-D. "For games especially, 3-D gives gamers an increased level of immersion, which can enhance an intense experience like Crysis 2," Yerli says.

Kinect Advetures gets a namecheck at the end for facebook/twitter functionality.

Nice. And Kinect seems official now.

Here comes the hate train though. And lots of, well if its done well, now its OK because its Crysis.

Does that mean that new Xbox (or Kinect) is 3D Ready?

It might offer HDMI 1.3 or 1.4, but 'old Xbox' could do 3D too (per the custom kind of Avatar implementation).

As soon as someone releases a 3D monitor that has hdmi 1.4 then I will dip my toes into this 3D gaming stuff. I wont be buying a new TV for a while yet.

what kind of monitor do i need to play in 3D? do i need SLI cards to run 3D?

200hz monitor, whatever card you're happy losing 30-50% performance from. unless you're on a console that will use magic to ensure that the high 30fps/720p standards remain unfettered.

I think Crytek needs to talk to Sony's marketing department. I'm sure they can organise a suitable slogan

Seriously though, at this point I think it would be faster to list what the engine doesn't support.

I thought the monitors that supported it were only 120hz?

Technosteve, don't just go buying something because a lot of x hz monitors on the market only accept 60hz input and are incapable of 3d and unworthy of existence.

yeah, 120hz, my bad.

A) Why does this talk like there are 2 separate SKU's (2D/3D)? 3D will fail so hard if they don't move away from that kinda shit fast (Blu-Rays included).

B) 360's 3D has run in 720x640 per eye in the past (Avatar, Invisible Tiger).

Dont you need a special TV for 3D? Just how many people have one of those, if so. It seems like a lot of hoopla for a market that is wildly beyond niche, unless I am missing something.
