Crytek hints at what Crysis 4 will be like

Crytek added this to speech #70 about how the new consoles should embrace f2p, which you can find through the link.

Eurogamer said:
Microsoft and Sony's next generation of consoles could struggle if they don't fully embrace free-to-play gaming, says Crytek's Cevat Yerli - although he admits the two platform holders face some tough decisions if they're to pursue such a model.

Yerli has bullishly stated that Crytek is itself embracing a free-to-play future, an area it's testing with some degree of success with Warface. After production has completed on Crysis 3, Ryse and Homefront 2 - the game being developed by Crytek's UK studio - all of the company's games will utilise the business model.

...

"We know that free-to-play games have a bad image," he said. "They have a bad reputation - it's pay to win, it's low quality. I completely get that, but we are making free-to-play that's high quality. It's CryEngine 3, it's a big investment."

Yerli's beliefs hold up - Digital Foundry recently investigated Warface and came away impressed with a free-to-play game that boasted triple-A production values.

And Yerli's adamant that Crytek will stick to its guns when it comes to free-to-play - and that the kind of social gaming that implies would, for example, be a part of any future instalments in the Crysis series beyond the one that's planned for early next year.

"We will do a single-player esque experience," Yerli said when asked if Crytek would produce another single-player experience. "But it will be for you and your friends together. Single player with two players! Story-rich experiences for at least two people. The premise I can say clearly is that free-to-play is going to be part of any business model we have going forward."

I'm mostly okay with this.
The Crysis games have been screaming for coop since the day they launched.

It remains to be seen how well the whole F2P part will play out, feel that those kind of games are a mixed bag.

I don't know why these guys are SO in love with the F2P model. Didn't Crysis 2 sell millions?

Could F2P be profitable? Sure. But why would you give up on the $60 model for the Crysis franchise when it seems to be selling well?

'Single player with two players!'

Uh...
Perhaps a form of speedrun competition? Or perhaps playing a level after your friend played it first. With dead/alive enemies and dropped weapons still around. (And probably dicks drawn on walls with bullet holes)

I dunno. Just making shit up here.

So basically try to do the awesome things that make me love Valve but present it in a way that makes me pretty much hate everyone? You have to make me want it, Yerli.

Don't see MS and Sony's next consoles struggling somehow. I also don't think a Crytek game would force their hand either.

Now if COD and Fifa tried to impose a F2P model...

If I buy a car, I want it to work as intended till it breaks down. I don't want to get a car for free and have to buy stuff every week for it to work as intended.

Nice to see you're already talking about a 4th game before releasing the third...

When a company plans on making sequels plans always start far in advance of the game before it even releasing. Always.

Free to play is still pretty new. What if you only had to pay around the price you'd pay anyway for the game to feel "complete" to you? It'd be the same exact experience for you, only more accessible to a bigger audience.

Fuck you, Crytek. You were one of the last developers that made quality, lengthy single player FPS and now you're just throwing it out the window despite being successful doing that. This hurts so bad. The industry better not give up on quality single player games.

Just make the MP portion F2P and let me pay $30-$40 for single player. I'll do it.

I still don't understand why they're taking an absolute approach. Some games make sense being f2p, I have no idea why they think it's a good idea to ram everything into the f2p model.

How do you know this automatically means no more crafted single player experiences? Just because it hasn't been done under a F2P model doesn't mean it can't be.

SINGLE player should involve a SINGLE player. Its not SINGLE player if you have more than ONE person involved.

The PR verbal diarrhea just flows from this guy's mouth. Its not a single player experience if I'm forced to play it with somebody else.

F2P and Coop definitely have their place but simply mandating they be in every title a company makes seems incredibly myopic and fairly stupid.

Read the quote in the OP. He says, "single player-esque" and describes co-op. I don't want that. I want to be able to pop in a game and play a mission without having to worry about coordinating with a friend or playing with some stupid random. I replay parts of both Crysis games regularly when I just have a few minutes and can't think of anything else and this would take that away.

I know that this just refers to Crytek but with all the buzz around F2P becoming the next big thing I just get worried that the reasons that I love gaming will die or become niche. I've never been a huge fan of multiplayer, outside of a couple titles, and the Crysis series is one of my absolute favorites.

It's not an issue if it's optional, which it very well could be.

I just don't see how they are going to monetise self contained linear single player / coop experience. The content will be exhausted too fast for people to stick around unless they focus on the multiplayer with some barebones campaign. The funny thing is they are sitting on the Timesplitters IP which lends itself very well to the F2P formula of a game like TF2.
