Write what you know. Most of the time authors slip personality traits of themselves and/or people they know into characters they make. The same way Disney and Dreamworks make their characters resemble the voice actors, or Pixar snags mannerisms from the voice actors (ie, Jesse's hand thing in TS2, or the way Syndrome walks/rubs his nose in The Incredibles)

Depending on the skill of the writer though this can either be very subtle or horrendously blatant and awful.

Also Dinosaur Comics is indeed fantastic.

At the very least, we can realize that all religions can come together and despise Tim's comics.

I hate to rain on the parade, but the actual author Tim Buckley is Catholic.

Albeit an obviously fairly non-strict one, since he gets away with cracking jokes.

The Ethan character is like his fantasy, a sort of "If I didn't have to obey my parents and adhere to this religion" escape. Still, if we're gonna hate the guy, we should have the facts straight.

And genuine artist don't go that much on DA anymore. That place is trash.

There are still those who remain, although they must have their own websites by now.
So you still get all the tumblr material like LOTR or AVENGERS stuff on DA along with all the other places where the artist also puts them.

I genuinely felt bad for Preston. The hate eventually got to the point where some morons at a con found his booth and sprayed him with water before running off. Not exactly assault or anything but it just goes to show you how far people were willing to go just to shit on his irrelevant comics. I never even thought the art was that bad (at least certainly not when compared to the average terrible webcomic you'll come across). He just couldn't handle criticism and made one too many strawman arguments which combined managed to piss off that special segment of the internet who are more than willing to spend their free time specifically trying to fuck with you.

I really hope he comes back someday with a little more humility and drive to do more than a mediocre antagonistic webcomic. He clearly has a love for drawing and the alternative appears to be wallowing in depression born of a life that hasn't gone the way he planned. Not something I really like seeing happen to people.

In all fairness, it looks like he was a pretty miserable and unbalanced person well before he became "famous". It's almost like a trend among internet comics.

CAD is objectively better than Drabble, IMO.

Comics just suck in general and it seems as if all the greats have either died, become irrelevant or retired.

I think For Better of for Worse is still readable, but it's not a guffaw, or was it ever.

There are a couple good ones currently. Zits has always been good. Deflocked is a rising star for me, and I get some enjoyment out of Edison Lee. Oh, and Bizarro, which I consider the first worthy spiritual successor to The Far Side (although its been around since '85)
