Cuphead animator shares hand-drawn animations

Have you had a chance to try it out? Their plan from what I understand is for it to be a pretty punishing game in the vein of old-school Contra.
Yeah the gameplay I've seen made me instantly think of contra and metal slug. Is this going to just be a boss rush though. Haven't seen anything that looks like just regular level traversal.

They said there's gonna be some platforming levels, but in general it's a boss rush game like the megaman arcade games.

Saw this when it was posted on tumblr a while ago.

I absolutely adore the art and style of this game. Stoked to buy it and eventually get some prints too.

Awesome as expected. I do wish that they eased up on the color-banding effect (chromatic aberration?) in the actual game though, as well as the fake film blemishes (scratches, hair). I'm pretty sure what makes those old cartoons great is the animation, not unintended technical flaws. Also apparently there are scanlines (hopefully optional) in some screenshots, which doesn't make sense apart from appealing to a different era of nostalgia.

Dude is great at what he does. I love how they animated rubber hose style from early early disney. Wish I was that good at 2D hand drawn. Such solid drawings.

Mainly focussed on Boss kills, but they did say there would be platforming sections.

I'm so bummed that regarding cartoons traditional, quality animation is pretty much replaced by cheap 3D series or "flash" type animation in the west.

This game reminds me of Alien Hominid so it's definitely on my radar.

It's a shame that games are the only place to find traditional animation like this these days.

It's really admirable how well this guy managed to capture this specific style that no one else has really been able to replicate since the 1930's.

People probably could replicate but I'm sure no one has been able to have as cohesive a vision for what they'd achieve with it. I'm reminded of Epic Mickey I think that utilized Steamboat Willy and used the same drawing style for a lot of the map, the music, and animations etc.

Plus now that Cuphead has done this, anyone else who tries it will be labelled a copycat or won't be as successful. I love it myself though. Really unique game. First time I saw it I was impressed.

Amazing. This can't come out fast enough.

This gives me Parodius vibes.

Yeah, it reminded me of the mermaid boss in Parodius as well. There's also the birdhouse boss; the feather attack is similar to the Uncle Sam bird boss in Parodius.
Also the ghost train instantly made me think of the phantom train in Final Fantasy VI.

I wonder if these are intentional references.

They are.

There's also a bunch more, some pretty obscure.

People need to take pause and especially appreciate the old-school process that they are using. NOBODY does 2D this way anymore. Nobody.

They are doing all of the line art on paper, tweaking it, finalizing it in ink, painting them by hand with watercolor, and then scanning the final frames in and touching them up digitally.

Most hand-drawn 2D art in games these days (which is rare in itself) is done on a tablet with a stylus, and it shows. Even the works of Vanillaware are clearly drawn digitally on tablets and then animated in a Flash-esque environment. This is 100% the old-school traditional method, and it's something to be lauded.

We all need to throw our money at this game when it releases to let the industry know that we appreciate its unique aesthetic and solid gameplay.

Bland? Dude, it's looking like a great run & gun game with lots of well-designed bosses. The air dash thing looks like something pretty fresh for the characters movement in that genre. Only thing I *feel* is missing are power-ups for your shots.

Go play Hard Corps: Uprising RIGHT NOW.

My thoughts exactly. Imagine this art used on a platformer RPG like Child of Light. Would've been incredible.

I mean, I feel like most people play the first one or two levels of a shmup and then give up because they're so difficult. So a lot of this guy's amazing animation will never be seen by the majority of people who play the game. Or maybe that's just me, but I've got a strong feeling it's not.
Basically your argument boils down to 'creators should really make what I want, not what they want.' Kindly fuck off with that sentiment.

Amazing art !

I can't wait to play the game but i still wish it was more of an adventure type of game than a 2d style shooter.

Will still buy day one.

Fuck off with a sentiment you just made up? OK.

Because that's not what I said.
You've spent several replies dictating what type of game it should be.

The only correct answer to what type of game anything on this scale should be is "what do the people putting in the work to make it want it to be?" Armchair analyzing their decision is some ol' bullshit.
