Cuphead |OT| 2 Cups 1 Screen

About a World 1 Boss
Cagney Carnation

Sometimes after he does his thing where he attacks the upper or middle area he would just stay frozen doing his dance and not doing any other attack. He would stay like this until getting damaged enough when reaching the final "extreme pollination" phase at which point the boss behaves normally.

anyone else got this bug?

Yup. It helped me beat him, lol. No ragerts.

Hoping for a patch that lets you set aiming independently from movement.

As it stands now you can make Cuphead into somewhat of a twin stick shooter by changing controls to:

Move Horizontal / Vertical - Right Stick
Move Left / Right - Left Stick
Move Up / Down - Left Stick
Shoot - RT
Lock - LT

Other buttons as you please. It works pretty well but the only downside is that you stop moving if the two sticks are set into opposite directions. A patch to separate aiming and movement could fix that (and may be possible considering that they already have two types of settings in "move" and "movement").

Recommend you all give it a try if the current controls aren't clicking for you.

Looooving the game, but I do have to say I don't like how everything is pretty much without context; it's mostly just a collection of challenges. These are awesome so in the end it's a minor-ish thing, but I can't shake the feeling of overall uncohesiveness.

"Hoping for a patch that lets you set aiming independently from movement."

This seems like something that would trivialize a lot of the game, much like how twin sticks shooters are far simpler and eeasier than top down arena shooters like Shock Troopers, Out Zone, Kiki Kaikai, etc.

Okay so I'm new to the Xbox/Windows 10 thing, I got a code from Amazon the other day and just entered it into my microsoft account and it says it should start downloading on my xbox... but I don't have an xbox. So how the heck do I get this thing for Windows?

Xbox site?

Open the Windows Store, there should be three dots at the top right corner, click 'My Library' and if it's not under 'Games' try clicking 'Show All'.

You really should have traded that in for a Steam or GOG copy.

Hit world 3, this game is fucking amazing.

I think I actually had the most trouble against the bird in 2, not Baroness or the Dragon. Dunno why but I kept getting rocked by the little one.

The detection on parries is so fucking wonky.

I felt like this as well. Like it's inconsistent - the timing for the parry on the up portion of a jump animation feels like it's different from the timing on the down part or something?

Try the controls out though. See what you think.

I think it's very consistent. When you hit the parry button you enter a kind of "parry state" for a fraction of a second and if you hit a parryable object in this timeframe you do the parry. So try to parry just before you collide with the object not as you collide with it. Once I started doing that I had no issues.

I just realized there's an achievement about
going through all stages without killing an enemy
(spoilered because it's a secret achievement).

I know a NPC made a reference to that but I didn't know it was serious or even possible...

I mean...obviously. That's generally how timing windows work.

This one just feels inconsistent. Like I know I should be making the parry like I've done many times before. Like an input lag I don't notice anywhere else.

the fight with the dragon, that i happen to be stuck on right now, reminds me of the fight with kaa in jungle book, that i happened to get stuck on a lot as a kid

Inkwell Isle II down, with A ranks on the bosses.

Not sure I've ever played a game like this where there's such a sense of progression within a single fight. Like, working on A ranks on some of the bosses and getting that feeling of, "wow, I used to have trouble with this part?" is pretty incredible.

Yeah, pretty low incentive to try them when it's so tough to actually pull off, especially in the heat of a fight.

Keep playing. and as has been mentioned a few times, just double tap A and watch the animation. It's not a rhythm game timing, it's a 'shield' you gain for a second basically. So you need to parry BEFORE you hit a pink object, don't try to time it to be WHEN you hit it.

The incentive is: Supers are very strong, getting more is very good, and you have to do it a lot of the time anyway as you get farther in the game. Like, Parrying isn't an optional mechanic past world 1.

This is the only really the second side scrolling shooter I've played ( Mega Man X being the other ) , grew up with only a PC for games and I'm having a blast.

I might have hit my wall though, making zero progress on the
robot
on island 3.

People having trouble with parries should give the first boss (the potato) several tries to nail the timing. He has a predictable move that is decent practice in nailing the parry timing.
The timing seems perfectly fine for me, and is an essential part of fighting the bosses. Couldn't imagine fighting some of the bosses without having meter to burn either on EX moves or supers. Takes the bosses down much quicker. Plus a couple of bosses do have moves that require you to use the parry move successfully so its better to get it in your muscle memory early to save you troubles later on.

Its rather clever. I'm replaying the levels at the moment to do this, managed to do the first four so far. Funilly enough I'd say the first stage is one of the hardest to do. It feels busier than the others in terms of enemy count and getting past the acorn machine took me a couple of tries.
The second level was easy to do, the last jump requires some good old pixel precision but that's all.

For the second Isle the first stage is a pain in the ass at times, as you need to be on point with your invisible dashes and build meter at the halfway point for the easiest time. I actually messed up and didn't have enough super energy for my super meter, but it turns out that you can leap over the giant hot dog, but its a very tight jump.

The second level is just pure fun to do. I actually swapped out my invisible dash for the two extra health points, and it actually helped. There's nothing that can't be done easily with the normal dash plus the extra health really helps for the second phase.

I'm fearful for the third isle levels though, as the pier was tricky enough to clear normally!

Same here, but that particular boss tracks progress strangely - I thought I wasn't getting anywhere at all. The first section is also the hardest of the three (I think). I got through by switching to bombs to take out each of the three weakspots during this first phase.

This game has perfectly captured that feeling of something seeming impossible one moment, to that rewarding sense of accomplishment that comes with overcoming that a short (sometimes) while later.

So, I sat down, and me being shitty at drawing I used a screenshot as a template/help to make this + some filters:

Dude, I just got to Island 3 and I'm at 800 deaths.

I suck at these type of games.
Hey, we have some in here that finished the game with under 200 deaths :D

During the first Phase, destroy his lowest weakpoint, then the head laser, then the chest port. The Kahl Bombs can be destroyed by shooting them enough, and the Laser Columns just need to be parried. Immediately after WALLOP appears, get to the bottom left corner and shoot till he warms up the head laser. Then move towards the bottom port. You should destroy it if you keep firing the whole time. Then, dance around in his face, Parrying the columns and occasionally looping back to destroyed the missiles. Once the laser is destroyed, blast the chest port. Once THAT's destroyed, keep firing at his heart. The magnet attack CANNOT hurt you, but can drag you into more dangerous things.

In Phase 2, try to end the Phase quickly. More and more missiles spawn the longer he flies about. Try to pepper him every time he swoops by. Use your Super if you have the meter.

Finally, DO NOT PANIC when he breaks out the gems. Stay calm and look for gaps in the patterns. Concentrate on dodging, he's a big enough target you should be hitting him incidentally just by dodging. Don't be afraid to Shrink if you need to.

Okay, at the (final boss spoilers)
crying stage of the devil what are you suppose to do? I thought it was to parry the closedd eyes, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Thanks for the advice you guys! Really worked. I kept dying in the first phase, but made it to the third phase after reading the two posts. Did it on fourth attempt after taking a little break, almost choked in third phase tho lol...3 hp to 1...i was shaking so much.

I haven't gotten so nervous while playing a game since my times raiding in WoW and EQ lol

Just keep shooting and dodging the falling things, he'll die eventually.

I don't think I ever beat Kaa back then lol. I didn't enjoyed as much as Lion king and Aladdin when I replayed them last year.

is there any way besides trial and error to determine whats parryable and what isnt

Everything in pink is parryable.

I'm about to start the game for the first time. What are the consensus button/controller changes I should make in settings?

Like swapping shoot to RT, dodge to X, etc...

Anything else I should do?

Congrats! It seems like he's specifically designed to make you panic and get sloppy. I'm glad I could help you!
Enjoy Sally Stageplay, she's much easier than Dr. Kahl!

Christ, I struggled so much with (isle 3 boss)
Rumor Honeybottoms
. Probably my least favourite boss in the game so far. Unlike the other difficult bosses, it was more frustrating than fun.

Thankfully, I fought
Werner Werman
straight after it, which was nice and easy.
