Current gen games with bots

I am always on the lookout for these, the last of a dying breed it would seem. Here's my non authoritative list:

Call of Duty: Black Ops (PC/360/PS3)
Quake Wars: Enemy Territory (PC/360)
Section 8 (PC/360/PS3)
Gears of War 2 (360)
Unreal Tournament 3 (PC/360/PS3)
Killzone 2 (PS3)
Perfect Dark HD (360)
Perfect Dark Zero (360)
Fat Princess (PS3)

I enjoy going online as much as the next guy, but sometimes I think it's more fun just to mess around with the AI instead (less stressful, a more controlled environment etc). Add to the list if you can think of any.

Edit: By bots I mean computer players that fill in for human players in otherwise standard competitive type game play. So MW2 Spec Ops or Gears Horde mode wouldn't count.

Uncharted 2 has bots in survival modes, several waves of AI enemies in fact.
Modern Warfare 2 in spec ops as well.
L4D and L4D2.

Unless you don't count those as bots. But they're AI enemies in a multiplayer environtment, and they have difficulty settings, so I guess they kind of count? Or do you mean exclusively for deathmatch/ctf-type games?

I'd imagine Civilization Revolution has bots.

Also games like GRAW 2 and RB6 V have offline modes with AI. (Firefight and Terrorist Hunt)

Gears of War 2
Killzone 2
Perfect Dark Zero
Quake Wars: Enemy Territory
Section 8
Unreal Tournament 3

The upcoming XBLA Western Lead and Gold will have bots too from what I hear.

I enjoyed PDZ more than any person has the right to purely based on messing around with the bots :D

I want to marry this man.

Bots are too few and far between these days. Especially in an era when a multiplayer component is shuffled into every other game being released.

That component is eventually going to lose popularity with players, leading to losses of communities and may even be shut down one day yet I may want to still play it from time to time.

To this day I still play UT99 with bots simply because it's still so fun to just mess around.

Why have many developers adopted this "fuck bots" philosophy so heavily?

anyway I LUUUUURVE BOTZ!!

I think he meant for DM/CTF.

Dammit, I came in here for this.

You have excellent taste, sir.

Anyways, maybe someone with an actual development background can enlighten us on why bots aren't more widespread in the current generation?

You can add any of the RTS games as games with A.I. bots.

You can play skirmish against the A.I. and this pretty much simulates multiplayer deathmatch. (though sometimes you can't play all the different modes that are provided for online multiplayer).

I'm referencing Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2 (360)
Kanes Wrath / Command and Conquer 3 (360)
Red Alert 3

Halo Wars (360)

They added them to all versions or just PC?
What do you think?

PC-only. The 360 port is going to have to be severely reworked if it's going to be able to run the new content.

Why bother really? It takes a great deal of effort to build AI for bots in multiplayer games, and the reason they exist is to provide enough people in a match to enjoy games. However, today there's nothing easier than pressing a quick match button and playing with real people online.

What other versions are there?
"But what about the po-"

"There were no ports."

Unreal Tournament had some pretty good bots. I've been fooled before. But I also like Perfect Dark's approach. They didn't try to make them mimic humans. They were all just evil bots, some more evil than others.

That is fine as long as the developers/publishers allow for people to set up their own servers to play together. If not, then someday when the servers for the game go down then the whole multiplayer component is gone. Games that are built on the strength of their multiplayer will be reduced to nothing. Many of the games we enjoy today will not have the same fate as say Goldeneye, where you can pop in the cartridge and play with your brother like its 1999 again. For the Xbox 360 games that only have online multiplayer, when Microsoft pulls the servers in like 2020, then without a local multiplayer or bots those games will be nothing.

I guess I wish for the survival of bots, because it ensures the survival of the multiplayer aspect of games long after servers are shut down.

CellFactor Psychokinetic Wars (PSN/XBLA) is pretty much bot-based arena FPS to the core.

Completely forgot about that.

I think...ugh....Punisher No Mercy(PS3) had bots to?

..or perhaps that was just the single player portion?

Bots would also solve the probkem achievement whores have when an older game with Multiplayer achievements can't be played online anymore.

FUCK ranked match achievements.

Man. This and splitscreen are things that need to be standard in multiplayer games again. Whatever the latest hot tech is should never be the only option.

I'm sure that all this work on good AI can pay in tuning tunning the levels without needing tons of player, and it can certainly pay off in single player too. But I may completely wrong, I don't know shit about AI and level design after all :lol

Reminded me of TimeSplitters.

That to:D . I still play timeplitters with my friends all the time, Virus especially. We have made all sorts of levels like one where everything is pretty much pitch black except for a rare flickering light. All you can pretty much see is the glow of the virus.

I love bots. They're great for when a game's online service would finally shut down.

However, I didn't know TF2 added bots. I really need to get on that!

I miss the good ol' days of playing with nothing but me and a bunch of bots in Q3A...

I remember playing Botmatch on the original Unreal (not UT). The netcode was so bad in that game (and I only had 28.8 at the time) so I just played with bots. Many fond memories.

The worst was joining a CS server only to see it was populated with bots :lol

Killzone 2

You can play KZ2 with bots only?

If it's so, I think I'll be trying the MP maps the first time since the beta phase. :D

I know it came out in 2000 but considering that there are still thousands online at any given time, I think it counts.

Those god damn Spam Bots are a death sentence.

Gears of War 2 has them, but they suck because the will blindfire headshot people with snipers in the middle of a frontflip.

Pretty much, but they're very predictable as well which makes them rather boring. It's nice to have the option though.

Does Chromehounds have bots?
Yeah kind of. I don't think they're very good though, also I don't think they try to capture COMBAS's or anything. If memory serves they just kind of hang around.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you can. Only problem I had was you never level up playing against bots so you never really get any new gear. It's kind of a bummer.

Crash Commando on PSN has them.

Uncharted 2's bots are great I just wish they were available in an offline mode. I sometimes like to load up a game of Killzone 2 with bots and just play passively while listening to podcasts. In Uncharted this isn't possible since I have two people depending on me (in survival).

Of the games I've played in recent years, Unreal Tournament 3 has by far the best and most fun bots. Also, they have no less than 8 difficulty levels (Novice, Average, Experienced, Skilled, Adept, Masterful, Inhuman, Godlike).

I am awarding the 2010 First Annual Neuromancer Special Achievement Award for Excellent Bot Support in a Video Game to Treyarch for their work with Call of Duty: Black Ops. They did an awesome job. Not only is the typical CoD progression system built in, but there are a lot of options such as getting to pick how many bots are on each side or getting to name the bots after people in your friends list. Also the AI is really well done, very formidable at the upper difficulties. Good show, Treyarch, good show.

Only you have to be online to use them, which is kind of ridiculous.
