CVG: Driveclub dev debating over 60fps target frame rate

If they make it 30FPS then the GT lovers and Forza lovers will always downplay the game even if it is somehow better than both (I doubt it).

Still looking forward to playing it though.

30fps is for second tier franchises... and what do you know, I consider Uncharted just that. ;)
You're the minority opinion on that though. Solid locked 30fps is just fine when you're not moving so fast. That's why it suited killzone because your soldier doesn't move too fast.

Real talk though I know I -can- fuck with a 30fps racer. Forza Horizon was pretty magnificent and at 30. It's not the same, but it can go a long way.

Always wondered why can't games be locked at this? Why is it always either 30 or 60?

Given the choice I'd rather the dynamic systems and weather at a locked-like-a-fucking-law-of-nature 30fps

Too bad we probably won't even get weather at launch, if at all

The site asked about weather effects like rain or snow, but received a negative answer.

“If there is a call for weather effects, nothing is currently off the cards at this point,” Evolution said.

“The game that you play day one on PlayStation 4 is not going to be the same game you play a year down the line because it will have evolved a lot. We’re keeping the development architecture of the tracks etc very much open. We’re not closing off anything just yet.

60fps or bust.

Yes, and it's shameful to set the target so very low.

Your original point was that they changed something in the Killzone series. They didn't. It's pretty shameful to change an argument to suit the facts when they disagree with your original premise.

Not interested at 30fps. The game does not look THAT good, that the frame rate would be sacrificed. As others have said, Forza 5 can manage it and that arguably looks better.
Seriously, the game needs to be 60fps. You can talk all the shit you like about better environments, which the vast majority of players won't even notice or care that much; or you can prioitise gameplay, like a man

I was already suspicious when they said they were "aiming" for 60fps, but with a statement like this they might as well say the game is going to be 30fps.

Pre-baked lighting vs Dynamic lighting.

30fps is fine. No one ouside of GAF will care or raise a storm. They will care about dem graphics though.

Nobody outside of Gaf is going to notice those extra visual effects, unless they are absolutely amazing. Nothing we've seen would suggest a massive leap over current gen.

Well, I guess it's a good thing they're giving away a good portion of the game for free to PS +, because they're not hyping me up for shit and I probably wouldn't end up buying it.

:lol They need to stop bullshitting. This game will be 30fps.

And this art director shouldn't be working on racing games.

We've hardly see what the game will actually look like at launch

unless you mean staring at a bunch of 35% complete videos and not understanding Evolution has always pumped up the visual splendor during the last leg of their development processes.

You must have avoided alot of PS360 racers.

All the time! If I did play one, and it was 30fps, I simply considered it a second tier racer. Those games can never be among my favorites.

I didn't think it was "just fine", even before we factor in the framerate drops.

That said, if it's solid it is acceptable. But it must be -rock- solid, and it can't be one of the genres I mentioned. When I said 'action' game, I meant more like the DmC mold.

Nice edit. You must have felt how slippery that slope was, playboy.

Don't get all upset brah, I'm so very sorry I was "changing an argument"

30 fps sucks for all games, 60 would make the world better. That's all I mean. I'm definitely feeling the shame I should be feeling for mentioning Killzone's dogshit framerate.

Do whatever you want.

No matter the choice I'll get it on PS+.

If I like it, I'll unlock the full game and if I don't like it, I don't. It's not like it's the only racing game on next-gen systems.

Solid 30 and max visual detail is the best bet, simply because 30fps versus 60fps wont cost you as many sales as having half visual quality.

Run the vehicle simulation and input polling at 60 for best responsiveness, because even if DF's junk-science testing methodology cant detect it, it does have an impact.

Even in people don't articulate it I am pretty sure even the most casual gamers notice. CoD is super popular surely in part due to 60fps. I also would think the average person playing Driveclub or Forza is more savvy on this stuff, considering there's a good community portion that buys wheels just for them.

Isn't it pretty late in the development process to be debating between 30 and 60fps?

This is what I'm thinking too. ~3-4 months, changing something like this seems insane. I would not expect them to actually go to 60fps.

F-Zero X ran at 60fps on the N64. If you cant make a racing game run at 60fps in 2013, then you're a pretty crappy developer, really.

I don't remember people bitching this much about 30 v 60fps when they made Motorstorm.

Seems like when it comes to realistic cars and pavements there is a paradigm shift in the way most people perceive a game.

I don't think for a second there's going to be this huge graphical leap come launch day.

And when Gran Turismo 7 comes out and is somehow both graphically superior by far AND 60 FPS people will throw this game in the garbage where it belongs if it's 30 FPS.
