CVG: No Nintendo hardware reveal this E3 company confirms

It is weird that Nintendo is releasing SSB 3DS during the summer. I am guessing they probably have other unannounced games (Majora's Mask 3DS?) that will be released at the end of the year.

Because they almost never outright deny rumors. Very unusual.

Gee it's almost as if they thought a rumor about a new console floating around right before the launch of the biggest Wii U game to date would be a disaster for the already struggling system and wanted to squash it as quickly as possible.

BUT NO I'M SURE IT'S BECAUSE IT'S OPPOSITE DAY IN JAPAN.

From the previous thread:

Surprise surprise, Nintendo agrees. Now bow down to your senpai.

We don't know the reasons so it's a stretch to say that they agree with you.

And I still see a chance of a reveal considering CVG asked Nintendo UK. They denied the DS Lite a few days before its reveal. They don't know shit.

The rumor never specified a new console. All we heard was new hardware.

It's not just one Nintendo UK rep saying it. It's countless Nintendo departments across the world.

Also, as has been shown countless times, they never outright say it's not coming like they did here.

It's not just Nintendo UK? Then all chances are gone. But where are those statements? I only saw the one from CVG which asked Nintendo UK.

Well, they said there are no plans for a hardware revision, which is just as outright as this.

"Despite the widespread rumours of a redesign, the company has been remarkably secretive about the DS Lite so far - even with its own staff, with Nintendo UK boss David Yarnton telling Eurogamer two days ago that "we haven't got any plans at the moment - nothing I know of" when pressed on the question of a DS redesign."

And I'm not saying it's likely that they will show hardware either. Just that we shouldn't be surprised if it does happen despite Nintendo UK telling us it isn't. History has shown that they NCL keeps most of the stuff secret from its subsidiaries to prevent leaks.

A redesign of Wii u would make sense. To cut costs and to make it look different from Wii. Also it gives a new chance to launch the console as new.

Come on now, this is the internet. Go read the other thread and you can already see how many people assure it is a new console in the first few pages alone.

But they were right. They denied the DS Lite would be revealed at E3 - and it wasn't revealed at E3. Which technically means this denial is completely worthless as well.

I guarantee they will show a redesign of the Wii U. Cutting BC for WII games and having it be cheaper.

Big N has to do something to make the Wii U sell.

Removing BC wouldn't really make it any cheaper. The only piece of hardware they could remove is a dirt cheap 1GB flash chip.

wii u has a 1 GB flash chip?

AFAIK it has either 8 (basic pack) or 32 GB of flash and 2 GB DDR3 RAM
There's a dedicated 1GB chip on the bottom of the PCB that's strictly for Wii mode. I guess it's a security thing, the 8/32GB chip is probably disabled in legacy mode. No idea why it's 1GB, as only 512MB can be accessed (same as the original Wii). Maybe they couldn't get 512MB chips, or it's a redundancy thing.

Q: That's true obviously, but Nintendo does have a history of redesigning handheld hardware and there has been all this discussion about whether you guys are going to do a DS redesign this year.

If I turned around and said to my staff that we're doing something new they'd probably throttle me, because what with this last 12 months of product that we've done and also what we've got in the first quarter...

Q: Can you categorically rule out then that you'll have a DS redesign announcement at E3?

That's been rumoured, I don't know for how long, but we haven't got any plans at the moment. Nothing I know of.

Q: Presumably it's a very real possibility further down the line, maybe in 2007 or something like that?

I mean, Micro was a surprise for us as well when that came out, so we weren't aware of that.

Q: Would it be fair to say that the questions we have regarding price and release date and so on will be fully answered in May when you do your big Revolution presentation?

I think E3 will be the big one to wait for when, and I don't think anyone in the UK is going to get a sneak piece of information on something as important as that [laughs].

The first reply makes it pretty clear that he didn't know. They didn't know about the Micro either. My point still stands, if they show any piece of new hardware at E3 - be it a new system or just a new accessory - Nintendo UK continues its history of not knowing shit.

Still surprised how honest he was in that interview.

Ah, totally forgot that this was Nintendo UK, not NoE. NoE would know, of course.

While we are on the topic of hardware, especially Nintendo, is anyone else looking forward to new hardware.

I mean PlayStation and Xbox are just revisions really I.e.1,2,3.... XboxX,XboxY, XboxZ...

Nintendo has had the DS brand for a while now. And we are on a revision of the Wii. Nintendo "updating" a console, even just in name hasn't happened since NES >SNES.

Remember the excitement of a truly NEW console brand, like it was when Sega was around. New exciting consoles, GameCube! Dreamcast, DS, WII, Mega Drive! ... I am really interested on the direction Nintendo's next hardware will go. Not just super DS or some crap.

If there is no new hardware at E3 some outlets should reevaluate their sources and how they handle such information.

There were never any sources. This guy wanted to generate hype and just pulled a story out of his ass and then backtracked.

Even in this very thread we have Dawg from Belgium, being contacted by NoE Belgium. The only reason you don't see other sources... heard of a thing called language barrier?

People actually believed these rumors? There was no way Nintendo was going to show new hardware when their current hardware is launching huge games like smash bros and mario kart. We might even hear about the next Zelda game. There is no way Nintendo is going to overshadow the Wii U when they have a lot lined up for it.

I was under the impression that when the system is made, a test is run until it IDs enough healthy sectors on flash, marks the bad ones as unusable, then carries on.

So a 1GB flash is probably easier to come by and gives more breathing room for healthy sectors. Whereas if there's a few bad sectors on a 512MB you have to trash the entire thing.

They revealed the Wii Motion Plus at a similar point in the Wii's life cycle. I don't think there's anything out there about them launching a new piece of hardware that isn't a new games platform.

They didn't say they are not working on a 3DS revision.

Shigeru Miyamoto has told IGN that Nintendo is extremely happy with the Nintendo 3DS’ form factor, and that we shouldn’t expect a revision anytime soon. Miyamoto went on to say that Nintendo isn’t developing a revised console as The Nikkei reported, but they are looking to the future and their next handheld games console.

“I really feel like I’m satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it’s the best for this generation. What we’re thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld.”

Not counting a new iteration of 3DS or possibly even later on, of Wii U, now that we've seen & heard the lion's share of what Nintendo has to show us at E3, and with some amazing titles launching this year and 2015, I've revised my prediction on when we may see all-new hardware revealed / released.

-2015 - QoL platform (? real)

-Next major handheld: late 2016 or early 2017

-Next major home console based on same architecture as handheld, but considerably more powerful/faster with more resources of all sorts: 2017 (was thinking 2016 prior to E3).

I'd expect Nintendo to take a page from Sony's playbook in 2013. When Nintendo does reveal its next home console there won't be a 1.5 year gap between reveal & release as there was with Wii U. PS4 got announced Feb. 2013, fully revealed at E3 and launched in November. The gap between the Wii and Wii U was 6 years. I think the Wii U may now be able to go 5 years,

Lets just say the next console gets released September ~ November 2017, that should give Nintendo a full 2 years before Sony and Microsoft are likely to release their next consoles, probably in fall 2019 (6 years after this gen) Mario Kart 8, Smash, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Bayo1+2, Zelda, and furthest out, next next main Mario game should all stretch out Wii U's life to a normal one, significantly improve sales (tho not massively) with other 1st/3rd party games between major releases.

MK8 could be the start of this, going right to Zelda 2015 and perhaps a bit longer. At least Wii U should be able to live a full 5 years from 2012 to 2017.
