CVS to no longer sell cigarettes (starting Oct. 1st)

There is no law banning cigarettes. CVS is a business that is allowed to sell whatever they want or do not want to.

Cigarettes dont need to be "abused" to cause cancer, that's the difference.

CVS is a private company, they aren't being forced to drop cigarettes nor should be compelled to carry them.

Cigarettes also affect people around the smoker. Beer and candy bars only affect the person consuming them. It's never only you involved when you smoke.

Smoking and junk food (and alcohol) aren't comparable. Smoking is much worse and harms non-smokers. Also, 90% of people who start smoking become addicted to cigarettes.

Basically everything I was going to say.

Oh? If someone drinks a can of beer next to you, what happens to you?

Ever had to deal with a raging drunk? Ever had an alcoholic in your life? Have you heard of drunk drivers? Give me three minutes of second hand smoke (how often does this even happen nowadays with all the laws and outdoor smoking regulations?) over that shit any day.

But that's only when you're around alcoholics and drunks. Everyone that smokes next to you stinks.

Nope. Does that make the decision to not sell cigarettes less good, somehow?

No. It's still a good decision, it just doesn't feel geniune. It's a PR move, so in a sense, it's less good. Not being in line with their mission is a bunch of BS. I don't appreciate being lied to.

It's like an abusive father openly deciding to beat his kids 3 days of the week instead of 5. "I care for you so I'm going to dial it back and only grab the switch 3 days a week now." It's good, but if he cared, he wouldn't do it at all.

If CVS cared about health, they'd only sell healthy items. This is a PR move on a product that is losing value in society. It's just like raising taxes on cigarettes (aka the poor)...No one cares because it's cigarettes and people generally don't like smokers anyways.

Obviously, they can do as they please. They're a corporation so of course they're less than honest. This is a money move..PR at the cost of the revenue cigarettes would have brought in.

Stinking doesn't give you cancer. It makes you uncomfortable. You know, like being around drunk people. It's obnoxious. Secondhand smoke is another issue, but even then, it requires a lot of exposure to cause cancer.

Yeah selling snickers bars but not cigarettes is just like beating your children. That's a good analogy.

Raising taxes on cigarettes? How the hell do you figure that?

Lol, this entire post is ridiculous.

This is at a Circle K near me...

Stop hanging out with drunks and alcoholics. If you find some responsible adult friends you can all go out and have a few drinks without being obnoxious.

Guess it's too difficult for you to follow. I'll dumb it down. Harm reduction does not equate to promoting healthy behavior.

Alcohol in moderation has positive effects on health. Even drinking too much seems to be better for us than not drinking at all...

Now then...what are the positive effects of smoking in moderation?

Good for people with ulcerative colitis, actually. In moderation, of course.

I don't mind that CVS is dumping tobacco sales, I just thought it was a little ridiculous, ironic, & hypocritical that the dude would say "that's inconsistent with our purpose" when 1/3 of their stores' floorspace is booze.

Well there's no alcohol in CVS stores in PA

That's a state law issue, isn't it?

Yes to all 3. They're abusing the substance. Hence why the treatment programs for it are called "substance abuse" and not "substance consumption".

Selling candy bars doesn't make not selling cigarettes a bad thing. It's unquestionably good and it would be a better world if every retailer did it. None of this is changed if the motivation is purely profit margin.

Read the original post of yours I quoted. Now read my last post. You made a statement about beer/alcohol that was not true.

CVS (and Walmart) are moving into healthcare delivery markets.

Right now CVS just has minute clinics but they plan to offer primary care services as well and it would be very bizarre for a doctor's office to sell cigarettes.

They are exchanging short term profits for long term gain (which is quite amazing in itself, to be honest )

pointing out a barely on-point contradiction doesn't make you correct or invalidate the opposition's argument. it just makes you look petty and/or dumb.

silly internet
