That's not really true. I come from such an area. And it's not really a new thing. Designing unwalkable areas has been going on for a while. Actually, there's just been a recent swing to design more sustainable communities (which usually includes being walkable).Zoe said:Those kinds of neighborhoods typically have a central mailbox location.
I apologize for painting you with the same brush as some of the others, but so many people posted in here with variations on "yeah well cyclist persecution we need more paths!!"zoku88 said:I love how the general response in this thread from non bikers is to ignore anyone who doesn't fit their preconceived notions of bikers and only focus on those who are jerks.
magicstop said:I hate that someone got killed from a collision with a cyclist! Terrible.
That being said, FAR MORE cyclists get killed every year from collisions with cars. The problem is that most US cities were not designed with foot or cycle traffic in mind. As a result, even with the addition of bike lanes, biking is very dangerous and leads to a lot of deaths. It's a tough situation for sure.
In before self-entitled car drivers who act persecuted and have some vendetta against people on 2 wheels instead of 4.
daviyoung said:I'm not sure how I feel about this. The fine is ridiculous for what is basically manslaughter, but proper cycle paths should be created. All we get are shoe-horned paths that are impractical and look ridiculous.

And the city still doesn't feel a need to create bike paths, or a commuter train to take more cars and dangers off the road. Numbskulls.
Stet said:Well yeah. I think the strange fallacy is that everyone agrees that bike lanes would make things safer, but in the end the majority of drivers would rather shave 5 minutes off their commute than see other people get to work safely. They know things would be safer with more bike lanes, they just don't care.
Squire Felix said:I can see where the cyclist is coming from, I have had too many friends and family members struck by vehicles because people don't pay attention.
Even with cycling lanes, people constantly are on their phones or distracted by something else and swerve into the bike lanes.
I don't understand how you could hit a person biking though...
TheExodu5 said:More bike paths need to be created. Ottawa is getting pretty decent. We have quite a few dedicated paths (especially along the river), and I've noticed they've started putting dedicated bicycle paths downtown.
razielim said:Judging from the responses in this thread it's no wonder I feel like people are out to kill me when I'm riding my bike. MotoGaf: "Get off my roads! Self entitled bicyclist think you own everything!". Walkgaf: "Get off my sidewalk and bikepath! Self entitled bicyclist think you own everything!". Guess I'll stop shouting "Passing on left" as it only alerts you to grab your gun.
littleworm said:This is why cities and other communities need to put money into developing bike lanes, and no those shitty three foot wide lanes next to roads that people park their cars on and last for all 500 feet.
I don't think all of those posts were sympathizing the person in the OP, though. I mean, since it's clear-cut that the person that killed the pedestrian is wrong, there's nothing else to really talk about, thus, why the discussion shifted to safety discussions surrounding bikes. (actually, I would only count the 23rd post as even somewhat sympathizing with the killer cyclist.)Htown said:I apologize for painting you with the same brush as some of the others, but so many people posted in here with variations on "yeah well cyclist persecution we need more paths!!"
HOW ABOUT JUST DON'T RIDE YOUR BIKE LIKE A CRAZY PERSON?
immy said:Cyclists>Motorists
Cycling is a steady form of exercise and non polluting form of transport. Roads should be redeveloped in favour of the cyclist in city's. Alot of the shit behaviour from cyclists is due to be treated like shit by motorists.
Adding bike lanes would cripple a city's economy?X26 said:what a brilliant idea, who cares that it would effectively cripple the area's economy

Hey, I follow the rules, and I have still been hit by two cars, both of which broke the rules, so don't say I bike like a crazy person. So suddenly everyone who makes a suggestion, you know one that will actually fix the problem are all suddenly crazy cyclists.Htown said:I apologize for painting you with the same brush as some of the others, but so many people posted in here with variations on "yeah well cyclist persecution we need more paths!!"

what does "redeveloping roads in favor to cyclists" even entail? If you can't answer that, how can you conclude it effects?X26 said:what a brilliant idea, who cares that it would effectively cripple the area's economy
If it obliges me to ram pedestrians on sidewalks at 40mph because the lack of planning for bikes makes you instantly insane, I'd rather not try to understand.dojokun said:Just try bike ommuting yourself before judging.
