Dad owns daughter on Youtube over disrespectful Facebook post

I know, right?
Who would have thought there were so many people willing to stick up for a spoiled 15-year-old brat who talks mad shit on her parents?

I'm 16. I may have been bad to my parents. Hell, maybe I still am. But I wouldn't ever support this little shit. There is a line that you should never cross.

Making Youtube videos is a pretty pathetic way to try and deal with your family issues.

Smart parents don't allow a facebook profile for their kids. I can only imagine her applying for a job someday and a letter like that coming up in a recruiters face.

You should probably refrain from having children. The guy is right, this is what children do, especially at her age. Early to late teens, biologically and scientifically they're at their most volatile and potentially annoying. Especially post puberty and all that. It's the I hate life stage. Not saying don't punish them, not even saying his punishment was necessarily wrong, perhaps a tad excessive, to each his own. But the fact that he's making her pay him back for the laptop when he was the dumb ass who shot it up, does not bode well for his intellect. Talk about pandering to the redneck stereotype and all.

Hmm, no, pretty sure that's your own bias talking there. There are thousands of videos of people destroying things on youtube -- so unless you consider them all rednecks.. yeah.

Yeah, he could have just donated it and what have you, and this whole spectacle is a bit attention whorish. However, everything he said was right, and I'd have trouble controlling myself if my kid had done something so stupidly insolent.

bravo. a man's man. parents these days worrying too much about being their children's bff.
good for him.

what the hell is wrong with this man? rather than shooting her laptop why didn't he just ground her, explain to her why she is being brat, and take the laptop away?

Dude is as big of a drama queen as his daughter apparently is.

Don't get me wrong, the punishment isn't wrong. By all means take the laptop away. Hell, if it makes the guy feel better, post it all over Facebook and Youtube. I simply disagree with the use of a lethal weapon in punishment, is all.
But there's no compelling reason to be concerned about the lethality of the force he used. It was not intended as intimidation. It wasn't done in her presence, or in a way directly threatening to her. As Korey said, dropping something off a four story building would also be lethal force. I can't see how the means of destroying the laptop is at all relevant in this case.

Cowboy hat wearing southerner shoots his daughters laptop up with a handgun, as a punishment (for her whining about her life on Facebook)....is not pandering to the redneck stereo type? Just my bias? Lol...

Sometimes I think that a lot of people here just don't want parents to discipline there kids at all.....

This is not about discipline. This is a public execution of her Laptop with a gun. He didnt just take away her Laptop. He uploaded a video of it on the net and publicly humiliated her for a minor insult on a webpage. I have seen stories on the net were kids killed themselfs for less.

Didn't he say he grounded her and told her what would happen next time?

You said he was stupid for wasting money by shooting the laptop, and THAT was what made him a redneck (cause hur hur, he has low intellect!). And why exactly is it okay for you to call him a redneck in the first place?

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised by this forums attitude towards guns given where a large part of its members are from. "Well, as long as he's not pointing at anyone it's all good".

That seems to be the societal trend. Parents have to be their kids "best friend" instead of an authority figure.

Indeed. I am not my future child's (due date April 1st) friend. I will not be their friend until they are in college and prove that they are responsible. Then I will drink with them, and drink heartily with them.

You are confusing redneck with white trash. Common mistake

haha...Props to the guy though gun stuff went a bit overboard, but he can do whatever he wants with his property. I worry that the daughter would turn out worse because of this unfortunately. Also looks like the parents don't have a good relation with her and it has come to this. Unless the kid is just a brat despite reasonable up bringing.

Maybe you didn't watch the vid? It's a second offense after doing it the way you suggested.

Eh, I dunno, I think a lot of people are forgetting that the dad already grounded her before for doing something similar. I know there have been a few instances where I've been disrespectful to my folks during my teens, but I have never publicly called them lazy pieces of shit, not even to my friends.

Also, I doubt she learned this behavior, but rather the Dad got the idea from her, and turnabout is fair play, but that's obviously just my reading into the situation.

Well apparently grounding her wasn't working, he talked about her being grounded before for similar problems. And it seems like he explained pretty well why see was being a brat and i think destroying the laptop (which he bought) is considered taking it away. Perhaps this new embarrassment tactic that he has going will get through her head.

You said he was stupid for wasting money by shooting the laptop, and THAT was what made him a redneck.

What the....now you're wrongly telling me what I myself apparently said.

The wasting money part had nothing to do with it (is that even a Redneck stereotype?!). It was the shooting the laptop with the handgun part. You have a very imaginative and warped level of reading comprehension and understanding. The stereo type in this instance is that redneck's love guns and shooting stuff.

If her rant was a minor insult, then I would consider this minor punishment and the humiliation she will suffer to be relatively minor.

I'm anti-gun as fuck, but it's a laptop. C'mon.

I don't know if it's because he can't empathize with his daughter (as his teen experience was vastly different from his daughter's) or because he's blinded by emotional distress, but as a parent, you should never stoop as low as your own children.

I get the "rah, rah, rah!" of it, but this is harsh, over-the-top, public humiliation. The dad has a lot to learn, even if he was at wits end IMO.

I certainly wasn't like this when I was younger.

I've seen way too many bratty children/teens in my life. I've seen way too many parents try the types of "discipline" that people in this thread seem to think will work:

A. Taking away the item in question.
B. Grounding the kid.
C. Try to reasonably explain to the child why their action is bad.

I've seen way too many instances of these so-called "reasonable" actions fail to work. Guess what - it's a weak style of punishment. It doesn't get you the respect of the willful child. Sometimes you have to acknowledge that the kid is just wired wrong, and being harsh is the only solution left.

All that will happen is that at the age of 18, that kid will post on GAF about what a horrible childhood they had, while neglecting to mention the fact that their parents are paying for their college education.

Didn't he say he grounded her and told her what would happen next time?

maybe he did (i skipped ahead to the end after a few seconds), but the fact remains that shooting the thing is just silly. Taking away her laptop would have accomplished the same goal.

What does he do next time?

I really thought GAF would be defending the girl and telling the parents they need thicker skins/welcome to the internet, etc like they do here...

A) This is awesome.
B) Wow, what an idiot.

Gonna have to go with B). I think she was due for serious consequences, but making a violent, public spectacle of this was flat-out stupid. Not to mention that her attitude problem probably comes from their deficient parenting skills to begin with.

lulz. I like how Gaf thinks that proper parenting can somehow eliminate teenage girls' rebelliousness. And parenting is exactly what he was doing.

Yeah, jeez. You'd think the laptop were a living being lol.

do our species a favor and dont have kids

i wouldnt be surprised if this incident caused his daughter to resent him and rebel even more

What do you think would actually work?

Edit: Oh, and Vic Ireland tossed a nasty insult my way. All I need now is Denis Dyack, and I've collected them all.

From what it sounds like, and I am extrapolating a bit, he has tried these things. This was an extreme measure to make a point.

Tough love indeed. It'd be ironic if she moved out like he did. Hopefully the lesson will have been learned throughout all this though.
