Dad owns daughter on Youtube over disrespectful Facebook post

Sometimes I think that a lot of people here just don't want parents to discipline there kids at all.....

That seems to be the societal trend. Parents have to be their kids "best friend" instead of an authority figure.

Wtf are you guys even talking about.

A reasonable response would be something along the lines of grounding her. Not putting a video online that makes him look like a borderline psycho.

maybe he did (i skipped ahead to the end after a few seconds), but the fact remains that shooting the thing is just silly. Taking away her laptop would have accomplished the same goal.

He had grounded her prior including taking away her technology for similar issues. He even warned her that next time he would shoot her computer.

It all goes back to society. When I was growing up I wouldn't have dreamed of talking shit to my parents or saying it where they could find out.

She ran her mouth for the world to see online and he is returning the favor showing how much of a spoiled brat she is for the world to see.

So a guy with a temper problem, a wounded sense of ill-fitting pride, an authority fetish, and a really fucking uncomfortable inclination to use firearms to respond to petty teenage Facebook posts makes a video in which he destroys his daughters laptop with 9 rounds of hollow-point ammo.

Neat.

Come GAF, who pretend to be all knowing, come with me to a private school in Westchester NY and I will show you why it is right to humiliate teens for acting like snotty little shits.

Gotta go with the dad on this one, though shooting it was excessive (he should have given the brother exclusive rights :P) the girl totally deserves to be humiliated and have the laptop taken away from her.

would it? now she has to work for it herself, she can't convince her parents to give it back. the laptop is gone, no one can use it.

when a parent takes a toy away, the child knows there is a chance for them getting it back, so they act extra special begging for it, now nothing she can do can get the laptop back.

different goals

I have no problem with the actual act, but I think youtubing it was over the line. Should have just kept it in the family.

Yeah. I don't know this girl or this family, yet right now thousands of people are discussing this teenager.

Shaming your kid infront of their friends is so god damn effectual, thats all thats needed. This is a world wide shaming. I'm sitting here in a different country watching a father shame his teenage daughter for making a bratty facebook post. Thats just weird to me for some reason.

You are projecting a whole lot of shit on this dude.

he's not a psycho. its a parent going to extended lengths to make sure he has his daughter's full blown attention.
what else would you do to have your children respect you if grounding doesn't work?

Leave it to a guy with Hitler in his avatar to call frustration with teenagery an authority fetish.

I certainly wasn't like this when I was younger.

I've seen way too many bratty children/teens in my life. I've seen way too many parents try the types of "discipline" that people in this thread seem to think will work:

A. Taking away the item in question.
B. Grounding the kid.
C. Try to reasonably explain to the child why their action is bad.

I've seen way too many instances of these so-called "reasonable" actions fail to work. Guess what - it's a weak style of punishment. It doesn't get you the respect of the willful child. Sometimes you have to acknowledge that the kid is just wired wrong, and being harsh is the only solution left.

All that will happen is that at the age of 18, that kid will post on GAF about what a horrible childhood they had, while neglecting to mention the fact that their parents are paying for their college education.

Guarantee this won't garner the desired response from her either. She won't have learned shit, especially not respect. Only resentment, hatred, further distance and will likely rebel further. But who knows what the right method of punishment is anyway, every parent has different methods. There's no exact science to this.

Oh snap you know this guy?

What the....now you're wrongly telling me what I myself apparently said.

The wasting money part had nothing to do with it (is that even a Redneck stereotype?!). It was the shooting the laptop with the handgun part. You have a very imaginative and warped level of reading comprehension and understanding. The stereo type in this instance is that redneck's love guns and shooting stuff.

Wasting money = low intellect. Which was one of your qualifiers for being a redneck, among apparently, wearing a cowboy hat and owning gun.

Honestly, I'm just tired of gaf freely throwing around the redneck slur on anything southern.

it ain't none of that psychological bullshits you prescribed. it's just a rough american cowboy dad laying down the law.

because in the eyes of the ranger, the unsuspected stranger had better know the truth of wrong from right.

I'm gonna agree with the others he should have donated that laptop. But then again he was visibly upset and very disappointed.

Also, anyone else waiting for part 2 of this story? The part where the bratty teen goes nuts and blows the whole family away because of this?

This probably is going to lead to his daughter having severe depression for the rest of her life.

How would that differ from using a bat or throwing it out the window?

How ?
He didn't do this out of rage, he planned the entire thing thinking it would make him look badass walker facebook ranger.
Emptying a clip on a laptop ? How incredibly immature and stupid does one have to be to set up such a gimmick and proudly show the world ?
lol, god knows how many times he tried that speech in the mirror.

This man is an idiot. A dangerous idiot and i am sincerely worried by the replies he's getting in which parents congratulate with him.

What do you think would actually work?

well not making a public spectacle of it would be a good start. it serves no purpose other than attention whoring on the dads part (like father like daughter) as well as to spite his own child. if this thing isnt some staged viral video, im sure the girl is going to be teased and picked on about this for years to come. everything else he said about grounding her and keeping her chores is also fine.

when my little brother acts up, i just take his shit away. no yelling or hitting or anything dramatic on my part. he can scream and cry all he wants but if he wants to get to the next level in super mario bros 3d land, he knows he damn well better finish his homework and chores and learn some respect

Or scared shitless of her parents. All the encouragment that guy is getting over the video is probably going to make him bolder. I really do hope she doesn't have any pets.

Oh shit, teach me how to be a robot dad, PLEASE.

Yeah, because you have to be a robot to take some time out, slow down, cool off, and think about the situation calmly before reacting. Any course of action other than a gut reaction is too far fetched.

Never mind the disturbing fact that this guy was THAT upset about his daughter posting some typical rebellious teenage tripe on Facebook. Or that he maintained that level of anger long enough to plan, make, and distribute the video.
But hey, how fucking DARE she whine about her parents on the internet.

I would like to poll the ages of everyone in the defense force.

Also whether or not members of said defense force have jobs and provide for other people.

You see, I have a theory...

In the girls position I would've absolutely flipped shit about it, but it worked pretty much the same way for me when I was growing up. I definitely remember my dad throwing my gamecube across the wall when I got caught drinking. RIP gamecube:(

Seems like a good opportunity to show just how good a child has it by making the child donate the laptop to the needy. Instead, he destroyed it. Lesson definitely not learned. All the dad cared about was being publicly dissed and getting public revenge. Not good parenting, to say the very least.

I think he certainly could've been less extreme. When I was out of line to my parents they just took all my shit away until I learned my lesson.

If you are upset or angry while disciplining your kid you've already fucked it up

Yeah, how fucking dare you have an emotional response to your offspring doing something they shouldn't?! What are you some kind of Nazi?!

Disgusting that some parents here would consider being angry or upset at their kids...

I was saying that the expressed concern about lethal force is not a particularly sensible one.

Freeloaders / younger = don't agree with dad

People with jobs (looking for jobs) / older = Do agree with dad

She may learn fear. Not sure you want to push a father who is at wit's end. The next step is getting kicked out of the house.

Regardless, he wasn't going to get respect before this incident. After reading that letter, love is also already out the door.

He already tried to do that before. It failed. It usually fails with bratty children.

Right & Wrong is something that eludes them.

Reeeeaaalllyy dont think he shouldve posted this on youtube. Shes going to resent him for a very long time and become even more rebellious. It wasnt even a "shape up" message. It was a "Im tired of you, so Im gonna destroy this and make you pay me back" message which doesnt really help his cause. Shes gonna be an even bigger pain in the ass now. This could easily lead to a lot of teasing which can often lead to not so great outcomes. This was a very risky move. I wouldve taken the laptop away and given it to someone less fortunate than she.

Wouldve made her hand it over to them as well. But this...

...not like this.

As a parent, I tend to try not to tell other parents how to do their job. Every child is different and every situation is unique. What works with my child may not work with his and vice versa. I wouldn't do this to my child, but they have yet to display this type of behaviour. Both of my daughters have a very healthy amount of respect for their mother and I. The key is to reinforce that love and respect at all times. That love and respect is a two way street and what this man did seems excessive and even more disrespectful than what she did. It's not a contest. When you are at your most angry is when you need to utilize the most restraint IMO.

At the end of the day, everything is only as big a deal as you choose to make out of it. He chose to make a really, really big deal out of her post. It may very well be justified, but I would like to think a frank and serious conversation could've yeilded the same results, minus the public humiliation. It does seem like he loves his child, was honestly disappointed, and is trying to steer her in a better direction in life. His method in this particular case did come off as pretty extreme to me though.

Maybe donating the laptop would've been a better idea, but I don't see anything wrong with uploading the video to youtube. Yeah it probably embarrassed her, but I think what she posted on facebook was way worse. The dad seemed hurt by it and it wasn't like this was her first time doing something like this.
