Dad owns daughter on Youtube over disrespectful Facebook post

you seem to be giving a kid way too much credit. how can you assume she is a good student and never skipped class or got drunk or done drugs? please enlighten me.

Purely speculation, partially on my own experience. I laugh at my parents now for how sheltered they were.

This guy strikes me as the type that would punch his daughter in the face if she backtalked him. At worst she's blowing off steam because her parents come off as heavy handed assholes. What she did is no worse than any kid back in my day, 'cept we talked instead of posting on facebook.

I'm not saying she shouldn't be held accountable and she shouldn't be punished, but by going to an extreme, I think the dad is installing fear and contempt instead of correcting. Thats just me.

This motherfucker is a bully and borderline psycho.

Fist, I agree that kids should have chores and be accountable for doing them.

Second, I'll probably have an allowance for my daughters just so they get an idea on how to use money, once they have a part time job, they'll fund most of their fun stuff that way.

Third, I agree that kids should be respectful to their parent but I also understand teens in particular don't have the same worldview, its impossible for them to. I don't know what kind of social media will be around in 10 years or so, but I'm going to expect my kids to blow off some steam. I'll be less worried about them saying their dad's an ass for making them do chores than other things.

I bet this girl is probably a good student and by most normal standards, no where near a discipline problem. She's probably never skipped class, gotten drunk, fucked, done drugs, anything that should cause real concern. At first chance, she's gonna bolt

holy shit dude, shut the fuck up.

I mean seriously. Did you see his beard? Obviously a soon-to-be killer.

maybe you shouldnt bring your own bias in this situation then

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

First, you assume this kid is a model student and perfect child.

Second, you assume the father is the kind of man who would PUNCH HIS FUCKING DAUGHTER IN THE FACE.

SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP. YOU. ARE. A. MORON.

So we're using "pure speculation" to judge people we've never seen, met, or heard now?

THE MAN HAD A COWBOY HAT FOR GODS SAKES
nevermind the fact that crime and violence rates are MUCH lower in the country than the city/suburbs where all the cool normal people live

As a texan, I can with some degree of experience, understand the true nature of the hat+gun combo.

we're all going to die tonight

Aren't we all though. Everyone here is judging the entire character of this girl based on her dad's reading of her facebook post. How could you say he's justified unless you're judging her actions by your standards?

We've been doing it since page 1.

edit: well this has gotten ugly for a few pages now. /bailout

edit 2: can we also stop saying pussified and bullshit like that? it's really fucking dumb.

And in LA, California when someone pulls out a gun it's serious shit.

Just because it's a cultural norm doesn't make it right.

You'd think the person with the young woman anime character would understand how cultural differences can be greatly misconstrued by others from the outside looking in.

Please don't get into personal insults. When you escalate stuff, it makes things worse. If you disagree with someone so virulently that you feel the need to yell at them because you think they're a moron, just put them on ignore.

I haven't watched the video, reading truth101's post I don't really have a strong reaction to it either way, so I'm not saying this because I disagree with you, I'm just saying that going aggro is bad for the thread, it's bad for discussion, and it's not very nice. It's also against the TOS. "Heated debates on the forums are welcome, as long as they abide by the established guidelines" "Foul language in the form of insults directed towards other forum members may result in a ban." "You will not use NeoGAF to post any material which is... abusive, vulgar, etc."

I know things can get heated. This goes for everyone else too, thanks! I'm posting a warning here because I know child rearing threads can be a close or touchy subject for a lot of people and I've heard complaints about moderation in parenting threads in the past has been heavy-handed, so I'm trying to be fair here.

Never said she was perfect or above punishment, I said I bet this girl by modern standards is not what most would consider a problem child, that she's probably a good student and she probably hasn't done a lot of shit a lot of problem kids do. But I think her dad has high standards and obviously isn't going to take a lot of fucking around.

Also never said she didn't deserved to be punished for her post either, but I think the dad went way off the deep end, to me he comes off like a type A jackass.

EDIT: Saying he'd punch her was probably taking it too far, but I've known kids whose parents would do just that, and they came off like this guy.

Good thing he's not in LA standing on Sepulveda then.

For god sakes, some of you are acting like he had her balance the laptop on her head while he shot it.

Yes let's go for ad hominem out of all the other options when making a rebuttal.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Tell me how am I supposed to view a firearm if it's only created for one purpose unlike say a pool, a car, or a sledgehammer

Oh OT|GAF... your nauseating assumptions and outlandish hypothetical scenarios.... God damn you people piss me off :/

Lol, she basically told her parents to fuck off. My parents would have beat the shit out of me and kicked me out the house if I ever disrespected them like that. Fuck, they'd even do all that even if I was with my girlfriend.

I approve of what he did. You fuckers act like abused his child. This man was fed up with his daughter's crap, thus he disciplined her.

I apologize. I may have went to far. It is upsetting for someone to hurl such an accusation at someone, regardless of my thoughts on this person, with no such basis in reality.

It might be a good idea to take a break from the thread or from GAF as a whole if you find this happening. No one is forcing you to be here and I assume you're not being paid to be here, so you don't need to feel like you can't take a break.

First. Learn the definition of "ad hominem" and get back to me. I in no way, shape or form insulted you or attacked you personally. That's in your head. I have a Doctor Who avatar, for christsakes.

Second. Recreational firing of pistols, shotguns and rifles is a huge sport in certain subsections of some cultures.

While I think many of us know what you're trying to get at, I think you (and many others in this thread) are too focused on the fact that a gun was used versus the actual "purpose" of the video.

Like someone else asked earlier, if it were a bowling ball/sledge hammer/lawn mower/etc, would you feel that the way he punished his daughter OK?

Obviously, there are going to be a LOT of opinions in this thread, and I'm being careful for the obvious reasons. :) Personally, while some people think hes being immature or too violent about it, I don't see a problem with the way he acted. It's punishment. She acted out, was warned and grounded before, but didn't learn her lesson. He decided it was time to take it to the next step.

And why people are going as far as to say he beats his daughter or is abusive or are saying his daughter is now going to be a slut/porn star/drug addict...Well, it's beyond me. Those sorts of generalizations are just obscene and quite frankly a bit immauture in their own sense.

Don't dish it if you can't take it. Good on him. Girl is a pampered brat. It's like if parents do anything other than coddle these little shit we scream "OH NO THAT'S NOT RIGHT!"

She'll think twice.

Explain to me why the firearm even matters.

I'll admit it's personal on my side. If my marine dad ever pulled a gun out for "discipline" that would permanently end our relationship if I were kid, teenager, or right now as an adult.

Aside from that, a firearm matter because (correct me if I'm wrong) it's intended purpose is to do harm to one another be it intentional or self-defense. This differs from say a car (driving), a pool (swimming), or a sledgehammer (destroying) whose purposes are dedicated elsewhere but still could've got the job done (I'd say the pool would be most efficient).

But she definitely going to run away from home, slit her wrists, become a stripper, do some cocaine, and never ever talk to her father ever again! gaf cant be wrong!

SHE WILL SOON MARRY UNDESIRABLES.

AND WILL END UP IN A ROADSIDE DITCH.

DON'T END UP IN A ROADSIDE DITCH.

I wouldn't do the same to my future kid(s), but I don't see anything wrong with this. He's fed up and needs to vent. Can't really blame the guy.

Another thing, why the hell would the father post this on youtube where it should be a private business?

I didnt know a laptop was a living soul. The Man, the Chair, The Gun and the laptop seemed to be the only thing there

This is not about discipline. This is a public execution of her Laptop with a gun. He didnt just take away her Laptop. He uploaded a video of it on the net and publicly humiliated her for a minor insult on a webpage. I have seen stories on the net were kids killed themselfs for less.
did you really just type it was a public execution of an inatomate object?
