So I'm pretty sure the entire message of the video flew over your head.

He is the parent, that laptop his his, he bought it, he can take it when ever he wants.

He has every right to destroy it.

Honestly if anyone sides with the girl here chances are you aren't at a point in your life where you can put your self on both sides of this situation, and understand why the father is right.

-waves- Hi there.

Both acted retarded. The father acting retarded left a more retarded impact/message than the girl acting retarded.

They very first lines of the post established that no one in this thread suggested he didn't have the right to destroy the laptop, but Gaborn argued as if that was the case. He's being criticized for wastefully destroy a laptop when he could have sold it or donated it, and for a youtube stunt designed to publicly humiliate his daughter.

He wanted to send a message with property he purchased. You can fake giving something away but not shooting the crap out of it. You can go to dells website and pick up a laptop for $400. Laptops have been at an accessible price for years now. So all the people who watch this then the first reaction is "omg, soo wasteful" kinda seem obnoxious.
Know what is obnoxious? People who post things that don't address anything in my post properly. There are plenty of kids in college that don't own computers and would greatly benefit from having a laptop. The simple fact is that it would have been far more beneficial to sell his laptop or give it away.

i could not believe some of the kids here.

seriously, she was 15 and using curse words to curse her parents on Facebook (an open public forum).

when i was much younger than her, i was spanked with flip flops and a belt. the worst was an extension cord,

that, and i was grounded.

maybe it's the asian in me, but man these kids are punished by what, timeouts? ROFL. that kid had it easy. i couldn't even curse even quietly to myself 'cause it was instilled in me that it's a horrible thing yet these kids shout it out for the world to hear.

amazing.

And I'm asian and raised as a marine brat. Corporal punishments were used for simple trivial things such as lieing about breaking a plate at 8 years old which resulted in belt whipping, physical beating to the extent of breaking of glasses and bleeding of nose. And let's not forget the constant yelling that is staple to the asian family.

After all that I've come to learn that these type of punishments are not the way to go, what about you?

So I guess the people who have hundreds of thousands of youtube views for taking apart/destroying the latest gadgets should also be taken to task for being wasteful?

And then like, posts on YouTube for the whole world to see how emotionally unstable you are.

We've all been there.

Know what else can be shameful? Having a parent who wears uncool clothes, or talks in a certain way, or any number of things.

And the kid will be shamed as a result of the parent being who they are.

So, this teenage girl was "shamed" on YouTube and it's wrong.

Hey, marrec - do you know what else a good parent knows? What their kid can and cannot handle. Did you read the update? His daughter could handle it, and clearly holds no ill will towards him. She's over it. Or do you just want to keep talking about a subject and indeed a person you know nothing about...?

It's his child. Not yours. That'll never change.

Yes.

Taking apart, not really if they can put it back together, but destroying, yes they should be criticized.

What kind of punishment would you give your kid if he/she said the exact same thing about you on facebook?

I would sit her down and explain to her why what she said was offensive. I would have her talk to the "cleaning lady" to hear what she does all day and how difficult it is. I would try to make her understand that being in a family means making a contribution.

I sure as hell wouldn't go out and make a jackass of myself on Youtube to "teach her a lesson." Especially not one that makes me look like a violent psycho.

How about engaging in verbal communication and coming to an agreement? How about attempting to establish mutual respect? What was achieved here was instilling "fear" into someone which is never the way to go in parenting.

I honestly can't believe that people think that unloading a firearm onto a possession and posting it on youtube then achieving viral status is a proper form of discipline.

I don't think a rational person could call this "instilling fear."

My only real beef is with him using a gun, but that's because guns are goddamn scary to me. Maybe just give it to someone who could have used it bro.

Same. He could have sold it(ideal since he would recoup some of the costs of buying the laptop and software for her) or found another way to destroy it. Other than that I approve of everything he did. The child really seems like some self entitled brat. Pay her for chores? Really? And I thought our generation was spoiled....

I like the fact that the guy is old fashioned at felt some sort of action was necessary, but it sucks how wasteful he is of his own money and his daughters computer.

whoever makes their child's nose bleed because of beating is not doing it right.

by 8 years old i wasn't stupid enough to lie about breaking a plate. why would you lie when you'll get caught anyway?

for me, corporal punishment is the way to go. when i was a kid i hated my aunt for beating me (my mom never beat me), but as i got older i realized it was love. if they just let me be like the other kids in the neighbourhood, i wouldn't be the person i am today. and im telling you the other kids were terrible. they did pranks and vandalized and whatnot. as a kid i thought they were cool like that but uh now i think it was disgusting. lol.

"I'm not your damn slave."
"How about you pay me for all the shit that I do around the house?"

How about you start paying rent?

It matters to me because he's crazy and a danger to his kids?

What normal functioning parent shoots shit they bought their kids when they take it away?

You listen to music in class? gonna shoot your ipod.
You text message all the time? Gonna shoot your cell phone.
You watch tv too much? Gonna shoot the tv.
Say something I don't like on the computer? Gonna shoot it.

Psychotic.

Not nearly. Clearly you don't understand the meaning of the word.

Psychologically and socially damaging her is a cool way of getting revenge. It beats physical punishment, since society generally disregards the idea of psychology anyway, and he won't go to jail for it.

How is this psychologically/socially damaging at all? Honestly?

You've never heard of an allowance?

yep, but who says you're entitled to one, and who says she never got one either? It's possible (and probable) she gets one and on top of that she wants to be paid for chores too. Even if she didn't they're buying her laptops and cellphones, which is already overkill. You're not entitled to money for doing basic chores.(really, based on the Dad's description her chores are barely chores at all)

Yeah sure corporal punishment might work for you but can you honestly say it can work for all, or that there might even be a better alternative that doesn't involve physical abuse?

If you can't sit down with your child and talk as equals on issues on growing up and have to resort to corporal punishment you're doing it wrong. I learned more about life and being mature during my last 2 years of high school when my dad finally "became tired" and decided to actually talk with me as an adult. It's only that I can thank for mutual respect for my father but not love.

ignorance at its best.

if my kid cusses me on an open forum like Facebook using shit I bought, then i have every right to do anything.

seriously if i had a gun with two bullets in it and i was in a cave with Bin Laden, Saddam, and the laptop, i'd shoot the laptop twice. end quote. XD

dude, that's your problem not mine.

it's probably because you did one thing bad, your parents punished you and you questioned why you were punished so you did bad things intentionally trying to be all rebellious yet your parents punished you further.

bottomline they're not gonna punish you if you didn't so anything wrong.

because for me, as long as i didnt do anything wrong i wasn't punished.

Fear of the gun? Let me guess, were you too raised in an environment where shooting firearms at random and fun were commonplace?

The gun part is the only part I raised my eyebrow to, nothing else. If he threw her laptop over the roof or sold it, I'd see nothing wrong with anything he did.
