WTF, an upscale, then why the 30 bucks tag price ehh ?????

I expected awesome sound from a blu ray (like the killers blu ray)

Damn.....

Not sure why everyone is surprised; this film was almost certainly created using SD assets. The quality of the audio is the only thing important here, and it's effectively not even commented on in that "review."

Upscales can look good, this upscale looks awful. It's very noisy and ugly. Almost looks like it was literally taken from the DVD rather than the uncompressed SD master.

Well, shit. I555 was created just before the animé market went mass digital-only, right? I was hoping (assuming) it was made on film :/

As much as DVD was a boon in home video, it has also been such hold-back. Creators who should know better targeting DVD resolution as the peak of home video quality. Even Lucas, in his incredible stupidity, waited for cameras that could do 720p before filming in digital for Episode II

Still, might still buy for the audio.

Sad times. Looks like it isn't digital so a proper remaster could've been done. This is just a disgraceful release.

Well, if it wasn't digital it'd still look better than this even without a remaster treatment on account of the superior resolution.

This is a straight digital upscale of the source. It very much implies I555 was created via digital means at DVD resolution, like so many animé not released in cinemas.

Sux then, but the upscale job is still terrible.

whats the point of putting it on bd disk if its not even HD. What a waste of the disk
Codec upgrade. MPEG-2 with a 9.8Mbp/s limit is very.. limited. Especially noticeable on animation. A well-done upscale can be a huge upgrade and pretty visually pleasing.

Also, audio upgrade.

I'm literally just waiting on a decent review of the audio before I decide to cancel my pre-order.

If it doesn't effectively use the surround speakers, as the DVD release did not, then there is no reason to buy this movie.

Oh great.

So reading this thread now for the first time gave me an instant stiffy. Only to then turn into an instant floppy.

Debating on canceling my preorder on this. Very disappointed in the quality. Will wait for another review before I decide what to do.

i used to have the dvd. i ripped it and for some reason lost the dvd. the digital version is the only copy i have AND it's a fucking itunes conversion for ipod so it's looked so shitty. i don't care if this is only a little bit better than the dvd, because it's going to look waaaay better than my ipod version haha.

OMG! I almost missed this thread! Watching Interstella 5555 from start to finish the first time was such an amazing experience. For a whole week after watching it I couldn't stop thinking about it, that shit blew my mind back then. I'll definitely be picking this up

Since this thread exists, I may as well ask: Is there any other high energy, upbeat, danceable music in the same caliber as Discovery out there? The rest of Daft Punk's catalog doesn't really touch it, and "similar artists" services always just give me a bunch of mediocre French House acts.

Louis La Roche or anything on the Crydamoure or Roule labels

Holy crap, how did i not know about this?

Shame it doesnt look brilliant, but ill definitely be getting it for the audio side of things.

Oh boy, you're in for an awesome surprise. I got goosebumps first time I heard that album.

BUYITBUYITBUYITBUYITBUYIT. Now.
I still get goosebumps at like half the album. Man oh man.

I just got it today from Amazon. Looks even worse than I'd expected. It's definitely an upscale, and not even a good one at that.

I'm not sure what the correct term is, but they must have messed up an interlaced frame conversion or something because it's littered with blended frames causing it to look like it's ghosting in motion. I didn't watch it all, just skipped though to see the video quality but it looks like it's poor all the way though.

I've never seen the original DVD but I simply can't imagine this is an improvement over just upscaling the DVD. Animation usually upscales quite nicely and you shouldn't get the blended frame garbage either. Save your money if you already have the DVD. Thankfully it was only 14 bucks on Amazon.ca and I've never seen the entire thing before so it's not a total waste.

How's the audio mix in 5.1? Better than the CD? Does it use the rear channels for music?

+1. It's a huge disappointment and there isn't any particular improvement in the audio either.
