I'm so sad. I actually was going to print some of them professionally and get them framed

It's probably still recoverable if you didn't write over the HD. Do a google search for a recovery software. Fairly easy with the right software I heard.

Format's OK as long as it wasn't one of those wipes that used specialised software to write over and over the HD.

Yes, I'm pretty sure. All the data's still there. Just the pointers are gone.
