Daniel Tosh Makes Offensive Rape Joke, What Thinks NeoGAF?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I've run into him in a few other threads. He's never been rude to me, but if he has to you i understand feeling vitriol towards Marrec.

Yeah, it's when I'm told that my opinion is wrong, that I get unnerved. It's just really douchey and off-putting. Which is really funny because I get that this offends people and they have every right to be offended and have valid reasons for offense, but I don't shit all over 'em. That's why I started the thread. I thought that a bunch of interesting views would be exposed.

People get passionate about things they really really care about. I'm sure absolutely no one wants to come off as douchey.

I dispute this. People laugh at "Hoooot Pockets", Pauly Shore, Jeff Dunham, and Dat Phan. They're not funny. There's also some ass on Pandora who sounds exactly like Pauly Shore and I can't figure out how to permanently ban him for being an unfunny impression of someone who is unfunny. I'm sure someone somewhere laughs. Probably Pauly Shore and whatever sadist is writing the routine that brings him back into my listing. Still not funny, even with two somebodies. Hell, I'm giggling while I'm typing this shit. Does that make my post funny, or does "funny" stop when it's masturbation?

Caliente pocket.

Here's the thing. "Hoooot Pockets", Pauly Shore, Jeff Dunham - not funny? Personally, I absolutely 100% agree with you. However, you have to realize, it's not funny to US. However, its funny to enough people that they get on TV, book comedy shows, release CD's and DVDs. No one gets all that without enough people thinking its funny.

As Smokey Dave said "If the joke is told and somebody laughs, it was funny." He's right. It doesn't have to be funny to everyone. Hell, very few jokes, if any, are funny to everyone.

Yeah Im sorry this whole sacred cow when it comes to comedy is nonsense. Anything can be made into a joke. Oh..b-b-but it offends my sensibilities!! Then don't listen to him. The only time I would say there is a legitimate issue is when the people make the comedy actually buys into some kind of dangerous rhetoric.

I was under the understanding that the point of discussion was to try to see something from someone else's point of view. If you can understand where they're coming from then you can expand your mind and your knowledge of others, right? no? If that's not the way it is, then yes i suppose no one would care about someone's dissenting opinion.

The problem is that not everyone is having the same argument or even a relevant one. "I don't think someone should be respectful when responding to a heckler, but maybe don't invoke gang rape is all, I guess that's too much to ask" isn't an actual argument, it's a meaningless statement from someone that wants something to say that makes them feel nice. Most of his comments aren't real opinions, they're just pedantic pleasantries that amount to "I don't like mean things." Well yeah, none of us do, let's discuss something relevant. If someone thinks that invoking gang rape isn't acceptable, then argue why other than "I find it offensive." "I find it offensive" doesn't mean anything.

Setting up a line that I feel shouldn't be crossed when responding to a heckler isn't an argument?

*blink*

I'm ambivalent on the "rape can never be funny" viewpoint. To each their own, doesn't bother me.

But I'll fight you to the death on my deeply help belief that Daniel Tosh can never be funny.

I usually love a super offensive response to a heckler but this isn't even a joke. It's just a stupid statement meant to piss her off. It should have been funny enough to piss her off and get the audience laughing at her too.

Setting up a line that I feel shouldn't be crossed when responding to a heckler isn't an argument?

*blink*

But why shouldn't it be crossed. "I find it offensive" isn't an answer. Are the other people in the audience animals? Will they hear the word "rape" and all jump her after the show? You're not presenting an argument.

This whole "I guess I'm the only one who thinks bad stuff is bad *shrug*" kind of argument you keep presenting just makes you look really ineffective and douchey.

I already did, you just haven't read all my posts in this thread.

Rape is an inherently violent and threatening act and gang rape even more so (which is why he said 5 guys, not one) it's not funny or insightful, it's threatening and he shouldn't have said it. The woman in question, though a dick for being a heckler, was right to feel horrified at what his response was.

Oh and INB4 "Marrec is always ineffective and douchey"

Is it the discussion of daniel tosh that makes this the word of the day? I could see lots of people using that word to describe tosh.....

Fixed that for you.

We get it. You want to be the political correctness police and your sense of humor should be used as a metric for everyone elses. We disagree

But why does her being horrified mean that he shouldn't cross that line? Anything can potentially be offensive. Should he not make murder jokes? What about jokes about hitting a woman?

Of course. I don't find Daniel Tosh funny at all, and I think saying that to someone is douchey. I just don't think that matters to his right to say it and I don't think he should have to apologize for saying something I don't like.

I suppose that is true, strictly speaking. But we are all human, we possess empathy. I don't have to know what it was like to be a black american in the 40s or what have you to sympathize the "struggle". I`m not saying how people should feel so much as how they should address those feelings.

"You don't know what it's like to be x" also seems to omit the "but I do" part. You're still making assumptions on what x groups experience is like are you not?

Just to make it clear, no. No part is omitted. You can't understand what it's like. You may have an idea, but it could be biased, false and presumptuous. That doesn't mean we should stop interacting with each other, it just means we can't predict how people will respond to certain situations. And that's why I love us.

*blink*

When has there even been a line for hecklers? I mean, have you heard some of the shit hecklers get thrown at them by comedians?

Comedians are there to to perform for the entire audience. When someone starts heckling the comedian, they are turning it to a one on one conversation by attacking the comedian on stage.

Don't dish it out, if you can't it.

Is your opinion that a rape joke can never be funny or that tosh just horribly fails at making it funny?

I doubt we would have this thread right now if ck or chappele made a rape joke.

He was just playing off the comedy of saying rape was funny, when it actually wasn't. Its not like this is evidence that if he were watching someone get raped he would be slapping his knees silly so I guess not everyone would get that, but essentially the joke is off the fact that rape isn't funny.

A rape joke can be funny. I've heard a few that made me laugh.

That joke wasn't funny, it wasn't even a joke. It was just a vile response to someone being vile.

A vile response, maybe....but i've heard MUCH worse hecklers, all she said was "Actually, rape jokes aren't funny." Which i don't see as vile. Inappropriate at a comedy show, yes, but not vile...

....oh no i appear to have slightly switched sides.

No, you're right, she wasn't being vile. Just rude.

Daniel Tosh isn't funny to begin with.

Neither was this joke.

And? You've yet to explain why your opinion should define what lines another person should or shouldn't cross.

I don't have to.

My opinion doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Daniel Tosh could come to my house and tell me that he wished my mom was raped and I could get super offended and post about it on Tumblr (I don't have a tumblr) but it really wouldn't fucking matter to his career would it?

This was offensive to me and I'm astonished at the number of people who find it perfectly acceptable or even expected of comedians. There have been numerous examples of better ways to deal with hecklers (and worse) but this specific thread about this specific thing has engendered this specific response from me and I don't need to explain or defend my opinion to you or anyone else. Disagree or agree, try to sway my opinion one way or another, but don't tell me I need to explain why I can have an opinion.

He apologized? Pussy. Own your actions.

These threads bring out the very best of GAFers.

How is Pussy even an insult anyway? Are you saying that he's womanlike in his apology? Are you saying that he is capable of giving birth?

I'm confused. Please enlighten us why a Pussy apologizes.

.

If you don't explain why you hold a certain opinion it becomes impossible to present a well thought out explanation for why you should change an opinion.

Your first post in this thread said "rape jokes aren't funny", yet you posted on this page "A rape joke can be funny. I've heard a few that made me laugh.".

So yeah.

Oh lord looks like my opinion's been changed in the course of 7 pages. Allow me to be the first to apologize.

I hope that doesn't make me a pussy.

Maybe he meant it as in "female cat".

Bottom line is this:

Daniel tosh is a comedian who's entire schtick is based on being offensive. When your schtick is based much more on being offensive than funny, you are a pretty shit comedian. Tosh makes joke about rape, probably without a real punchline, as per his schtick. Unfunny joke gets a response from a viewer leading to a more direct, no punchline joke. Gaf says as long as you call yourself a comedian you can say whatever you want.

And somewhere in between a marrec attack force forms.

Have only read the OP:

1) I don't see what the original joke was, so I can't say if it works, is funny or is offensive.

2) His rebuttal is funny. The joke is mere amplification of the preceding one to further rile offense. To be offended by it is to be a puppet.

Hey, you're the one that said he shouldn't cross that line, I just asked you why. You don't have to explain your opinion, but you should expect to be able to back it up with something aside from invented horror at things no one else ever said and false superiority. At least just be up front about only wanting to post "bad things are bad" a hundred times and don't waste everyone's time pretending to be up for a discussion.

There's nothing invented about it. And if you don't want to waste your time then don't respond, I think there is a more important discussion about what is comedy and what isn't but I don't think we can have that discussion because there is obviously no line for you or a majority of people in this thread.

Don't forget onemic's strawman argument in your tale.. or would it get too meta?

Like clockwork.

these last couple of pages have been gold! Its gone from "rape jokes aren't funny" to "I've heard some that made me chuckle"

Exactly. The guy was casually speaking about rape in a manner blatantly intended to offend. To respond the way he did actually shows a modicum of comedic skill.

Like clockwork.

I'm not a clock, I'm a timebomb baby.

Listen Kano, if you feel I've zero meat then you've made your point gracefully and without salt, but I'm not sure what to do from here. You think I'm vapid, I think what Tosh said is offensive and shouldn't be said in that context.

Soo... what's for lunch?
