Daniel Tosh Makes Offensive Rape Joke, What Thinks NeoGAF?

Do most murderers believe that most people are murderers and the others just cover it up better?

I definitely can?

I don't agree with your assumption and therefore also reject your conclusion?

edit:

Are you really going to argue that because not everybody rapes that even if rape jokes are actively promoting rape it is unjust to suggest people shouldn't make them?

Are you really having that much trouble interpreting my statements just because I stuck a question mark after them? If you ask a question about whether I believe something that you suggest is implied by "my logic" and I reject the suggestion that "my logic" implies that, what does that suggest about whether I believe the thing in question?

Ohhhhhhhhh, I get it, "pigeon". I'm not getting sucked into your games. Pretending to be a completely obtuse poster on a message board may be your most devious trick yet!

As far as I can tell, saying overly offensive things is just his schtick, i.e it's the only thing he does.

Maybe in some instances, but it's hard to see how any of that applies to this incident. It's just a heckler and a bad comic acting stupid.

Nah. It's just entertainment. Nobody is using Daniel Tosh jokes to cope with their deep-seated fears and insecurities.

I don't know this guy, but he appears to do the shock stuff, was in fact in the middle of a routine, and she interrupted him while he was in that place. She could easily have gotten a much worse reaction. I've seen it from other, admittely more talented, comics:

I can't watch this at work.

But Patrice O'Neal FLIPPED OUT at one of those Comedy Central Roasts because people made jokes about his diabetes.

He then died a few weeks later.

Anything relevant in that video?

edit: And some of you claiming Tosh lacks talent need to watch some of his standup.. in particular his first special / DVD "Happy Thoughts"... he showcases his full talent in that standup.. and he has a pretty UNIQUE routine.. he's not just all "shock" shtick.

Dude hosts a show that airs a half hour of comedy 20-30 times a year.. and he does a VERY good job at it.. he makes all other hosts of similar shows look like cue-card reading amateurs.

Dude is a hard worker, and he's very very funny.

I don't give a shit about people being offended on a comedy show, different people have different sensibilities and someone will be offended by anything.
No, we need to look at what he actually said and make a judgment call.
Personally, I don't see anything that he needs to apologize for.
You need to be quite obtuse to think that he's advocating or even condoning rape.

Already been posted. The thing that is awful about Pidgeon, Marrec and the lady in that video's argument is not so much that they don't enjoy that kind of comedy, it's how quickly they move from "they shouldn't make jokes like that" to "they should lose their job for saying that" to "they shouldn't be allowed to say that"
Nobody cares what you're offended by, get over it and don't watch it in the future.

probably to just get it over with and try to move on. his pr and comedy centrals pr probably have his head swimming with the worry about the newscycle on it.

yeah. if he was a slightly less famous comic and didn't have a tv show i doubt there would have been any apology.

I am impressed with how quickly you move from complaining about the things I said to making up wholly new positions and attributing them to me.

Because rape isn't funny, and rape jokes contribute to rape culture.

Rape jokes aren't funny TO YOU. But there are plenty of rape jokes that are funny to many other people. Differing opinions are okay.

As far as them contributing to "rape culture", that's a whole other thing.

What is this "rape culture" people allude to?

I really don't think any "rape joke" actually makes rape acceptable in anyone's mind... or encourages anyone to rape.

In fact, that entire idea destroys the point of the "joke".. that it.. isn't acceptable..

It's a fairly simple shtick, but I think Tosh pulls it off far better than most, and he's a lot more clever than people are giving him credit for in this thread. His non-shock jokes are hilarious too.

Rape culture is more of a byproduct of how society treats the crime of rape through victim blaming, not holding the majority accountable, and seeing it as a punishment (they had it coming/prison rape) than it is a byproduct of rape jokes.

Jokes are told about the entire spectrum of terrible things from starving children, to pedophilia, to race issues, to sex etc. etc. Rape jokes make the crime of rape less serious as much as jokes about murder.

There's a fight to be had against society when it comes to rape culture, but coming at comedians for telling jokes is the completely wrong way to do it.

What fucking society do you live in? I've never heard a sane person blame a victim for being raped or say someone had rape coming.

I'm always ready to attack anything I think perpetuates the culture of rape and how victims are treated in America and even I don't think we should make every joke about rape illegal. I've found my line in this thread.

He means saying the girl shouldn't have dressed like a whore or walked alone at night down a dark alley in a bad neighborhood with no protection. That sort of thing is victim blaming to the rape culture people

Hecklers deserve whatever is said to them. If you go into someone's workplace and harass them as they do their job you are a piece of shit human being and deserve to be spoken to like one.

I am sorry to say, this happens. In the USA and South America at least, this happens. Not saying people shouldn't joke about it and DEFINITELY not agreeing with ridiculous terms like rape culture, but the bolded does happen.

Already been covered, but for example

1. Shouldn't have been dressed like that.
2. Shouldn't have been alone at night.
3. Shouldn't have been at the club if she didn't want to be felt up.
4. Shouldn't have drank so much.
5. I mean, she's slept with guys in the past, you think she was actually raped or she's just making it up.

Welcome to most college campuses in the West. It's so much of an issue the UK had to do a PSA explaining that when a girl says no and you force yourself on her, get this, it's actually rape even if she's dressed in a short skirt. Weird, huh?

Context is big here, we need to know more. That said...

Tosh also jokes about the military getting killed so what do you expect, the man has absolutely no class whatsoever. His material is geared for shock value, I dont find rape jokes funny in any context sorry. To me it shows a lack of creativity on the part of the comedian when they have to resort to joking about rape/molestation/etc. to get reactions from the crowd.

I mean I've heard the saying, "She's asking for rape wearing that" from a lot of people. Do people actually mean that? I assumed it was just a joke. I've even made that comment before, but I do not think any person is asking for rape. You can walk around naked, and you're not asking to get raped. Rape is a horrible thing and I can find jokes about it funny, but in real life, I do not think anything about rape is humorous.

It's like playing Grand Theft Auto. Yes, I can brutally murder tons of people walking down the streets and find it fun, but do I find it fun in real life? Fuck no. Nothing is entertaining about people actually being harmed.

oh hey guys marrec is back, just couldn't stay away I guess

Oh come on Zeke, I came back because there was an update to the story which changed my position (since my position turned out to be based on a fabrication). Don't hate.

Anyone who lived in any sort of party culture through their late teens / twenties knows there are far more guys with the propensity to rape than you'd imagine. Especially when you throw alcohol into the mix.

Still don't know what this "rape culture" supposedly is, I've been friends with some less than moral people, but no-one ever actually discussed raping people as if it was something cool to do.

Just to make it clear, no. No part is omitted. You can't understand what it's like. You may have an idea, but it could be biased, false and presumptuous. That doesn't mean we should stop interacting with each other, it just means we can't predict how people will respond to certain situations. And that's why I love us.

Could be. But what idea is not susceptible to these things? I can't understand what it's like but apparently you can understand that it's not understandable. Your statement was still pretty insulting tbh. Even if rape is this big girls only issue as you make it seem it's still poor reasoning. Just seems like a very ad-hominem kind of attitude. "Oh you have a dick? You're opinion doesn't mean as much now. Oh wait I have one too...." You act like people of different demographic are aliens.

Ok so you can't predict how certain people will respond. The response to that is not to bubble wrap everything that comes out of your mouth of to police the language of others but rather for those people to get the help they need and or exercise some self control when those feelings arise. It doesn't give a license to behave like this heckler did. You may want to yell at or harm people who say things you don't like, that does not mean you should.
